Disambiguation

Ok. Done! I have a question. When creating stubs for these villages in Haiti, is including the geo coordinates enough for citation? OR should I find it on Google Maps and use the URL as a reference? (When clicking on the geo cordinates and then on the google maps link in geohack it shows the location which is labeled when you zoom in enough). I am a Geography Masters student and collected rural location data for several small countries. It isn't a problem for me to correct them, now before I get to far into it, by citing with a URL if needed. Thanks for your help. (Michashadders (talk) 01:46, 25 August 2014 (UTC))

I'm most familiar with US geography, but I can try to help. You mentioned that you collected rural location data for a few countries; do you have another data source for that? If you have an official source like government or census data, I'd recommend you cite that; failing that, you can probably cite Google Maps, though considering that they got the data from somewhere else themselves it's not an ideal situation. I recommend that you have some kind of citation though, since that verifies that the place exists. I am a Remote Sensing/Geographic Information Systems professional and currently continuing on with my education. For one of my projects I created clusters of villages for an ideal placement of large fresh water facilities. I chose to do this with seven countries that are in need of fresh water. In my endeavors I found that many of the countries (6 out of the 7) do not fully break down their census into the village/settlement level. For example, Haiti's hierarchical structure is Departments->Arrondissements->Communes(Municipalities)->Communal Sections. That is where the census stops. In poorer countries this seems to be the case more often, than not. The problem is communal sections can still be large, in area, and have several named settlements within them. As a consequence, I had to scour these 6 incomplete countries with a 5km^2 grid and create a log of place names as I run across them, marking down the Departments, Arrond. , etc. (info that was avaliable). I have no idea how google got their information but they seem to be correct. Names of settlements are above the clusters of houses. Many locations, about 60% match up to an extremely detailed hard cover atlas that I own. The other 40% do not usually due to the size of the community. I would really hate for all of my collected information to go to waste. But if that is what needs to happen then so be it. While I agree that systemic bias occurs, It becomes hard to fix the problem when the resources aren't readily available to represent a country. Much of the 3rd world does not have the resources to have complete census information. Thus , an underrepresented country enters another cycle of systemic bias. Thanks for any help on this. In that case, I'd say that you can go ahead and cite Google Maps as your source, though you might also want to cite your atlas when you can. I certainly don't want your information to go to waste either, and if Google marks a community it's almost always verifiable. Another source that might be useful, since I think Google gets some of its data from it, is the GEOnet Names Server, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's database of world locations. The articles are formatted excellently but even though it is a stub it could use some additional references that aren't just a google maps page to help improve it. Search for some on the internet and you might find it. Just some friendly advice. SantiLak (talk) 04:44, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Sure, I plan on adding more info for the places that have it available. Unfortunately, many of these places are small and do not have much info on them. Haiti doesn't exactly have a great reputation of record keeping or information availability. For now I am just entering my info as stubs so anyone who has their own info can add it. With the influx of foreigners still going to the country to help out, I suspect foreigners will add info as they come across the page. That is my hope at least :) As I finish with a region I will review my stubs and search info on line for the larger settlement; although, I suspect it will be largely fruitless. If you want some insight into what I am doing and my information source read the section of my talk page titled "Disambiguation" (about halfway down I explain what I am doing in a paragraph that starts with "I am a Remote Sensing/Geographic Information System". Welcome!

Great start to Wikipedia! You are lightning fast at article creating, especially on geographic pages that require exact coordinate input.

Just a quick note, I've noticed that many of the areas you have created ends in Haiti or the department or both. This isn't needed if there is no other name like it already it use. If the name is in use, towns, villages and rural areas would end in Haiti: for example Canaan, the biblical city is already in use, while Canaan is also a village in Haiti; so it gets Canaan, Haiti; no need for the Department or Arrondissement in its name. So the only time when the department will follow as in Terre-Neuve, Artibonite is when is a municipality and the name is already in use. This also done to easily distinguish the two (towns, village, rural vs. municipality).

Now, if there are two or more municipalities (cities) with the same name in Haiti, they would get different departments to follow such as Terre-Neuve, Artibonite, and Terre-Neuve, Sud (I made this one up to demonstrate).

If there are two or more towns, villages and rural with the same name in Haiti, add the department also as in, Canaan, Artibonite, Haiti | Canaan, Sud, Haiti | Canaan, Nord, Haiti (all made up again to demonstrate). I doubt there would be three places with the same name but hey you never know. This is just a reoccurring attempt to keep these pages organized shredding the excess. This also makes it more search engine friendly.

Again, bravo and keep up the good work. I urge you to join WikiProject Haiti; similarly there are many mountains and peaks that are very similar in creation. 249 pages is insane! Ok. Sounds good. Do you want me to go back and move all of my pages? My actions, while ill conceived, were well intended :) "La Source", for example, is the name of 29 places in Haiti. 5 in the Sud-Est department alone. Thanks again for the help. I will look into creating pages for mountains and peaks when I complete this task. I spent 14 months geocoding lesser known locations for a GIS project on clean water. Mountains of Haiti

Hi Michashadders! I found the website of mountains if you are interested in creating stubs for. [1] This is a list of perhaps all the mountains and ranges in Haiti which is one of many things the country is well-known for (as you surely already know). After all, its name means land of high mountains right? Judging on the geography stubs you created in such a short time, this would probably be a breeze. I know that it would take me a bit longer to do especially after reactivating the WikiProject Haiti; there was plenty of reorganizing I had to do in an attempt to get it into operable shape for potential interested users, as well as lost pages that were difficult to find because of a lack of categories, project tags etc. However, if this task is too big of a challenge for you let me know.
