Attacks and hostility

I appreciate your opinion, Meshach, but since you accuse me of "attacks on Edchilvers and hostility", I would like to point out, in my defense, that it was Edchilvers who, in his AfD nomination, accused an informative article about this Business intelligence vendor (Dimensional Insight), comparable in every respect to articles about the company's main competitors, of being "blatent spam" (sic). If this is not a hostile attack, I don't know what is. The next day, following my strong protest (which you refer to "attacks on Edchilvers and hostility"), he had to retract the "spam" part of his statement. For all I know, he may even regret having submitted his AfD nomination in the first place. But on the Wikipedia, once you get that wrecking ball going, it develops its own momentum, no matter how gratuitous the initial impetus. If you feel you need to lend the wrecking ball a hand to punish me for standing up for fairness and sound logic, so be it. Pasquale 16:22, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if that sounded a little harsh, Pasquale. Now that I re-read the "attacks" do not seem as serious. The problem with that article is that it is written very informally and does not cite any sources. Citing the companies own website does not count. Sources must be from verifiable third-parties (see WP:CORP). If these are added I would be inclined to change my vote. meshach 15:25, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates on the subject I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. Mantissa

Hi Meshach, I'd like to inquire about your removal (on March 4th) of my disambiguation entry for Mantissa, which you've classified as an advert. I was a bit dumb folded by this. Maybe the entry was too long? Or does it not meet your notability preferences? I believe that the library does not deserve its own wiki page, but should be present on the disambiguation page. Please explain your reasoning. (For the record, I am neither a developer nor user of the library in question, and cannot make any verifiable claims as to how widespread its usage is.) --Darkbane 05:33, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Darkbane, the policy I was following is listed here: WP:DISAMBIG#Summary_or_multi-stub_pages and WP:LINKS#Links_normally_to_be_avoided, I just did not feel that the Mantissa company was notable enough to be included. Generally to be included in wiki companies need to satisfy WP:N (see also here for how similar discussions often pan out). Hope that helps. meshach 18:10, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

I think you may have misunderstood the content of the original entry. Mantissa is not a company, but rather a software library (for solving ordinary differential equations). I've been unable to determine the notability guidelines pertaining to software libraries (except for the case of software projects in still in the planing stage, which are classified as not notable), but generally speaking, many software libraries of various degrees of notability do have a presence on Wikipedia. For example: Aviatrix3D Project Darkstar OGRE ZLIB Jogl LWJGL

Based on WP:DISAMBIG#Summary_or_multi-stub_pages, I can see that the description should be shorter. However, the link in question does not, in my opinion, violate any of the 13 gotchas listed under WP:LINKS#Links_normally_to_be_avoided. A very shaky case could be made for link type 3, but the nature of the website linked is not promotional but rather informational. Nor does it contain advertisement (it wouldn't make much sense either, since the library in question is under a BSD license).

I could optionally create a stub article instead, but I feel that I don't have enough knowledge of the library in question to write much meaningful content beyond "it solves differential equations" and "it's written in Java". --Darkbane 00:25, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Disclaimer: I was invited by Mesach to come here and give a third party opinion. As I see it, the link is properly removed but for a different reason. As stated at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages): "Disambiguation pages are solely intended to allow users to choose among several Wikipedia articles, usually when a user searches for an ambiguous term." So in most cases, if a Wikipedia article does not exist on a topic, it doesn't belong on a disambiguation page. However, as also stated there

"Links to non-existent articles ("redlinks") may be included only when an editor is confident that an encyclopedia article could be written on the subject...Adding links to articles not yet written should be done with care. There is no need to brainstorm all occurrences of the page title and create redlinks to articles that are unlikely ever to be written, or likely to be removed as insufficiently notable topics."

Thus, the question becomes: is the the Mantissa library notable enough for inclusion? Is it likely to be written, and is there any need? I think none of us are confident on the first question and I would answer the latter questions with "no." So I think the link should not be included and if it were to be included, please note these relevant instructions, also from the MOS page: "The description associated with a link should be kept to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link. External links should rarely, if ever, be given entries in disambiguation pages." I hope that brings some clarity to the issue.--Fuhghettaboutit 17:37, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your input. I'm not sure I completely agree with these guidelines, but deferring to Wikipedians' compounded wisdom that led to their creation, and in light of not being able to write an extensive article about the library in question, I'll rest my case here. In any case, the removal for the reasons you cite makes much more sense to me than the previously named reasons. Australian Quarterly

In your nomination for of this article you state that the article's "creator keeps removing the CSD notice" (my emphasis). The creator of the article, who is relative newcomer removed the tag once. That was the user's 13th edit on Wikipedia. He apologized for that action, pleading ignorance. diff. I, not the creator, removed the speedy tag because the article has an assertion of notability. It appears that the article is heaving hard and gasping. I read WP:N. WFAE is the NPR station in Charlotte. it is verifiable, independant, widely broadcast, and the individual is an elected public official, a judge no less. Honestly, the topic appears to meet WP:N by those standards. - sure it would be nice to see more press, and you might prefer to "read" cause they don't teach ol' fashion audiocassette listening in schools anymore. Mark De Vattimo wiki page

Hello there,

It seems the Mark De Vattimo wiki page is being considered for deletion.

I have interviewed Mark De Vattimo for the information and he has given me permission to put up the wiki page about himself. The photos that were on the page were also used with his permission.

I am not a very skilled wiki user so if I have done something wrong please explain it to me so I can avoid this kind of situation in future.

Hi Joe. I can understand that you are very interested in putting up a page for Mark De Vattimo and I believe you that he has given his permission to do so. The issue is that Wikipedia pages need to contain sources independent of the subject to verify all information. Right now it looks like there are no sources separate from Mark De Vattimo's site itself. Some examples of sources are newspaper articles and reviews and articles in magazines.
