Stadia/Stadiums

edit

What does your OED say then? Because my one is from around the same time as yours and it says "stadia". I have a more up to date one at home, which I think says that either can be used, but "stadia" is the traditional plural. – PeeJay 20:41, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

You don't believe it's derived from Latin? You mean the "-ium" bit doesn't give it away for you? Anyway, the word originally came from Greek, but was adopted into the Latin language. – PeeJay 22:13, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're talking rubbish now. The word was originally Greek, but since the English word is the same as the Latin word, it takes the same plural form. Same with bacterium/bacteria. – PeeJay 22:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well traditionally the plural form of stadium is stadia. Like I said, it's the same with bacterium/bacteria. – PeeJay 22:56, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are overcomplicating things here. The current OED says (and I checked this today, so don't tell me I'm wrong) that either "stadia" or "stadiums" can be used as the plural of "stadium". It doesn't say which is more traditional, but it does say that either is correct. Let's leave it at that and leave things as they are. – PeeJay 22:20, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
