Who I am and what I am doing here

Hello, I'm Myrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian). Get it, I'm a strict Australian wikipedian and I am senstive about wikipedia policies and language used in my talk and I am quite prepered to have big talks with administrators and even get a consensus (how do I get a consensus) for being able to enforce my requirements. Thanks! :) The infobox project would have been so much faster if I'd stuck to just upgrading infoboxes. For Melbourne I ended up designing an Excel spreadsheet to collect the data in bulk, then imported it into an Access database and created some code to translate it to an infobox. You'll find some random stuff around the place - like an entire article on Christmas Hills, Victoria which came into being because on looking at it in the Melway it seemed to warrant more than a stub, and Mentone, Victoria which made a bold claim about politics that turned out to be true, and ended up with a politics table. Some of these places I really want to visit now! Especially some of the more remote parts of the Mornington Peninsula, and the One Tree Hill reserve at Christmas Hills (I'll laugh if I see "Where did you hear about us?" in a visitor book) Orderinchaos78 13:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Removal of redirect, Elms

Somebody has seen fit to redirect the Morton Accolade page in order to remove the trademark TM from the name, on the rather dubious pretext that it makes it look like spam. (A) I think this is nonsense. (B) He, or she, has only done it to this one tradename. (C) I don't know how to cancel the redirect! Would much appreciate your help. FloraBase

G'day Melburnian,

I suspected as much; sorry about that. I wish that next to the "hide my edits" buttons on my watchlist, there was a "hide that other bloke's edits" button. I often wish for it when Orderinchaos is on his article ratings rampages.

I'm sure you'll agree that {{Flora of Western Australia}} was a rather obtuse name for that template, and that {{FloraBase}} is much more appropriate. For the life of me I can't think why I chose such a stupid title. It had been bugging me for ages, and today I finally snapped. I think you and I are the only contributors who routinely use that template; since we're both aware of the move, do you think it would be safe to delete the redirect?

I cleared my user page to make some room for a troll who promised that "your user page is getting destroyed". It was my way of saying "like I give a f*ck". I haven't got around to posting something new yet, but I will eventually.

Census template

Hi :) Glad to see you're able to make use of the template... I've done a parallel set, Census 2001 AUS and Census 2006 AUS, because the ABS are probably going to do this to us again and at least next time one just has to tweak a template to get all the articles working. No worries :) The other thing is some of those links were taking up 6 or 7 lines, the new one takes two and the code number is easily verifiable from the ABS site. I'd seen a few which had doubled population (this works in some outer perth suburbs, eg one that went from 150-odd to 5000+ between the censuses) but, yes, unlikely for an established Canberra suburb, for example. Interwiki

Hey, To link to a site like commons, you can use interwiki links, like this commons: (link to commons). The wikimarkup for that is [[commons:]]. Similarily, you can link to a page on commons like this: commons:Main_Page ([[commons:Main_Page]]). That way you don't have to use external links, and it'll update them if the sites ever move URL.

Hello Melburnian & many thanks for your response of 02.40 28 August. Have followed your instructions which resulted in a page in Wikimedia Commons titled Image:Experimental vortex.JPG (I registered as User Gwickau)but can't work out how to place the image into the Wikipedia article Vortex engine. Additionally I went to the Wikipedia article 'Vortex engine', 'Edit' then inserted Image:NameofImage.jpg|right|thumb|Caption, with double [[ (as recommended by Administrator Longhair), then clicked 'Upload file' and followed your instructions but this resulted in a new Wikipedia page (can be viewed by looking at my talk page). Still having a difficulty

FloraBase

Thanks for chipping in. You realise, I hope, that the ids have stayed the same only for species. For genera they have changed. Not sure about subspecies and varieties yet. Hesperian 03:02, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

It just occurred to me, rather too late I admit, that this means that if we simply updated Template:FloraBase to be the same as Template:FloraBase2, the only links that would break would be the non-species-level ones, as the level=s|f=090 stuff would simply be ignored by the template. This means we could stop converting species-level links to FloraBase2 right now, and instead adopt the following procedure:

1. Change all the non-species template calls to FloraBase2;
2. Update Template:FloraBase;
3. Change all the calls to FloraBase2 back to FloraBase;
4. Remove the spurious level=s|f=090 stuff from species-level calls at our leisure.

It says at the top that it is a list by botanist abbreviation. You could ask, 'what is the list for'? If I have an abbreviation "R.Br." and have no knowledge of botanical standards (as is the case) then logic says I would look under R. Evidently my bizarre decision to create the FloraBase citation template at {{Flora of Western Australia}} is contagious. Someone has created a PlantNET citation template at {{NSW Flora Online}}. I was thinking I might move that template to {{PlantNET}}, fix it up a bit, then push it into these pages. Any comments, suggestions, words of advice before I begin? Yes, given that the Flora of New South Wales is just one part of PlantNET (e.g. it covers topics such as "Aussie Algae"), its probably not quite right to use PlantNET for the template name. I think I slightly prefer {{NSW Flora Online}} over {{New South Wales Flora Online}} to keep it more condensed in edit view. I'm all for converting the cites to templates, as you know I'm a great fan/user of your APNI and FloraBase templates. While we are on the subject, do you think a template for eFloraSA[15] would be worthwhile? --Melburnian 03:25, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I've just been through every(!) Grevillea photo in florabase for this, unfortunately there are a few pics there that are seemingly close matches but nothing I'd bet the house on, for example this but it doesn't seem spiky enough.

Any chance you would be able to help identify it? I'll have to delete it from commons though as it is wrongly named - the only thing worse that no picture is a wrong picture... I have a picture from further back of the complete plant if that would help?

If anyone is interested in helping or can identify WA wildflowers precisely, I have a few more to upload that I'm not 100% about also, if you're game? Any watchers of this page feel free to jump in...

In 1980 a "living collection" of dryandras was started at Cranbourne by Alf Salkin, to complement the collection of banksias that was already there. At one point there were over a hundred dryandra taxa growing there. Some never really established, lack of water killed some, P. cinn. killed some others, some died of old age without recruiting any seedlings, but they say there are still plenty there if you look hard enough.

Odd - in a very overlawned area (rsl homes on side of river estuary) near where the last bridge before the ocean - about 3-5 metre high banksias - and a couple of them deadparrot dead - a few others struggling. might have an image of them amongst the wedding photos :( SatuSuro 23:34, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

You're ill-advised to ask me when you've got access to the editor of the Banksia Study Group, the one and only Cas Liber. Actually, perhaps I'm short-selling myself, as he confesses himself not all that great with not-much-cultivated western species, and I was able to identify this one immediately. It is Banksia praemorsa (Cut-leaf Banksia). We do have an image of the species, but it is of the yellow-flowered form, which is actually quite rare. Red-maroon inflorescences are far more common, so your image is a better exemplar. Hesperian 12:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) Feel free to add any references you know of to the LGA ones too (I see you've done that with Williamstown) - I'm going to do all for the Melbourne region, including Mornington Peninsula and Geelong, but don't know if I should do any of the rural ones. This partly comes about as the result of a massive amount of research I did in SLV during a trip over there in November, as well as a handy bit of bidding on Ebay for old Melways. I was pondering the same question. I think it would be most in keeping with the principles of systematic botany (which maintain Halosarcia as a valid and well-defined, albeit non-current, name) to create a separate article on Tecticornia, and overwrite this article with a redirect. That way, if this decision were to be overturned, or if someone decided to write an article on the defunct taxon, the article history would be in the right place.

However, it is entirely possible that I have thought about this way too hard, and we should just do the obvious thing.

G'day,

Just thought I'd share my discovery for today. Here you can download a dictionary file containing all names of WA plant species, the idea being that you can add the file as a custom dictionary to Word, and terms like "argyrophylla" will no longer come up as spelling errors. If you're running Firefox, as I am, you can achieve the same by copy-pasting the contents of the file into persdict.dat in your Mozilla profile directory. Of course it would be better if it covered all of Australia, but I suspect this will get you 90% of the way.

And while I've got you, here's a mystery for you. Today I heard mention of a plant recently discovered in WA, which turns out to be the most basal flowering plant yet discovered, preceding even the split between monocots and dicots. Amazingly, it was found growing in a Kenwick truck yard. So far about a hundred of the world's leading plant taxonomists have made the pilgrimage to the sacred truck yard to view the plant. I wrote down the genus on a scrap of paper, but now I can't find it. Google has failed me. :-(

It turns out I'd scrawled a couple of words into Notepad and saved it on my laptop desktop - "a scrap of paper" indeed.

The genus is Hydatella, not a new genus by any stretch of the imagination. Research last year placed the Hydatellaceae near the root of the flowering plants. I am left wondering where the Kenwick truck yard comes into it, and whether someone has made a lot out of very little. Perhaps a new, most basal species has been discovered. I don't know. Florero

Hi, I noticed you are helping to remove spam on Houseplant. I have notified the offending editor, but in the process of expanding the houseplant list, I noticed the two large photos in that section have very prominent tags for this very same Florero product that spammers have been advertising on Houseplant. Not that a commercial product can't have photos taken of it, but I am almost positive that the uploaders of these photos (some months ago) were also involved in spamming. Is this a conflict of interest, and should some sort of action be taken concerning these not-so-good faith photos?
