Claytons

Hi Melburnian. Thanks for your information on Claytons which I have now rewritten and moved to the correct spelling. If you have access to a digital camera, it would be great if you could photograph the bottles in your possession and add that to the article. I can do any graphics preparation if you need help. dramatic 08:23, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Who I am and what I am doing here

Hello, I'm Myrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian). Get it, I'm a strict Australian wikipedian and I am senstive about wikipedia policies and language used in my talk and I am quite prepered to have big talks with administrators and even get a consensus (how do I get a consensus) for being able to enforce my requirements. Anyway, I'll leave you to it.

Beaconsfield map

Hi, Welcome from me too. I really liked Image:Beaconsfield Tasmania Location Map 2.png. Since it is GFDL, you might like to consider uploading it to commons where it will be available for other wikimedia projects such as other language wikipedias and wikinews. Golden Wattle

Thanks for the terrific picture :-) --Arktos talk 08:32, 30 August 2006 (UTC) It is a beautiful spring day and I am changing my user name to Golden Wattle. I hope you don't mind if I use your terrific picture to illustrate my new user name. I haven't got a good reason for Arktos and it is too indicative of the northern hemisphere and means bear in greek or or apparently the goddess of last light - too gloomy for me. Well done on your work with Melbourne Town Halls

Great stuff ... I'm also trying to contribute myself. I've been working mostly through the south eastern suburbs you look like you're doing the northern suburbs, which is even better in terms of coverage ! --Biatch 09:48, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Elms

Dear Melburnian Much appreciate the excellent photos. Have suggested to editor MPF that the cultivar listings are restricted to their respective species pages, otherwise the main page will be overwhelmed. There are literally dozens of American, Chinese, Japanese and Siberian Elm cultivars raised in North America. Best wishes Ptelea 10:26, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Good work!

Just thought I'd say your work referencing and improving the Melbourne articles following the mass infobox upgrade has been noticed and appreciated. Orderinchaos78 12:04, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! :) The infobox project would have been so much faster if I'd stuck to just upgrading infoboxes. For Melbourne I ended up designing an Excel spreadsheet to collect the data in bulk, then imported it into an Access database and created some code to translate it to an infobox. You'll find some random stuff around the place - like an entire article on Christmas Hills, Victoria which came into being because on looking at it in the Melway it seemed to warrant more than a stub, and Mentone, Victoria which made a bold claim about politics that turned out to be true, and ended up with a politics table. Some of these places I really want to visit now! Especially some of the more remote parts of the Mornington Peninsula, and the One Tree Hill reserve at Christmas Hills (I'll laugh if I see "Where did you hear about us?" in a visitor book) Orderinchaos78 13:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the good work on Mooroolbark. :) Orderinchaos78 05:17, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! I've been trying out this Inkscape thing for the route signs and thought I'd employ it to draw the intersection in such a way as not to murder it when it got shrunk to the size needed for the article. Orderinchaos78 05:46, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Love the images! You're doing a good job there. The Wonga Park one in particular is really nice. Re:Commons - you should create a category "Pictures by Melburnian" or something and put that in each of your shots so that you can keep them all together, and others can see your work :) Orderinchaos78 08:52, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

No worries, I'm only passing on my own learnings of a couple of weeks ago :) One weird thing about having most Melb suburbs watchlisted is the weird vandalism one sees here and there. Like this: [11] Orderinchaos78 12:51, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for your advice on copying, regret still on a learning curve here. Merry Christmas, Ptelea 13:50, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Removal of redirect, Elms

Somebody has seen fit to redirect the Morton Accolade page in order to remove the trademark TM from the name, on the rather dubious pretext that it makes it look like spam. (A) I think this is nonsense. (B) He, or she, has only done it to this one tradename. (C) I don't know how to cancel the redirect! Would much appreciate your help. Hello. I notice you blanked vandalism on Talk:Euan cummings. The page did not have an article associated with it, so I deleted it.

The next time you blank a talk page with only vandalism edits, do check whether the accompanying article exists; if there's no article, add {{db-talk}} to the talk page so a sysop can delete it (per CSD criteria G8. Thanks! Awyong J. M. Salleh 01:41, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

FloraBase

G'day Melburnian,

I suspected as much; sorry about that. I wish that next to the "hide my edits" buttons on my watchlist, there was a "hide that other bloke's edits" button. I often wish for it when Orderinchaos is on his article ratings rampages.

I'm sure you'll agree that {{Flora of Western Australia}} was a rather obtuse name for that template, and that {{FloraBase}} is much more appropriate. For the life of me I can't think why I chose such a stupid title. It had been bugging me for ages, and today I finally snapped. I think you and I are the only contributors who routinely use that template; since we're both aware of the move, do you think it would be safe to delete the redirect?

I cleared my user page to make some room for a troll who promised that "your user page is getting destroyed". It was my way of saying "like I give a f*ck". I haven't got around to posting something new yet, but I will eventually.

Census template

Hi :) Glad to see you're able to make use of the template... I've done a parallel set, Census 2001 AUS and Census 2006 AUS, because the ABS are probably going to do this to us again and at least next time one just has to tweak a template to get all the articles working. Orderinchaos 10:51, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) The other thing is some of those links were taking up 6 or 7 lines, the new one takes two and the code number is easily verifiable from the ABS site. I'd seen a few which had doubled population (this works in some outer perth suburbs, eg one that went from 150-odd to 5000+ between the censuses) but, yes, unlikely for an established Canberra suburb, for example. And argh - thanks for the alert. Not sure how that happened! I forgot a /ref somewhere, all fixed now. Orderinchaos 11:33, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Pfalz (ship)

Hi Melburnian. You are off to such a great start on the article Pfalz (ship) that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. Appearing on the Main Page may help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Before five days pass from the date the article was created and if you haven't already done so, please consider nominating the article to appear on the Main Page by posting a nomination at Did you know suggestions. If you do nominate the article for DYK, please cross out the article name on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Again, great job on the article. -- Jreferee (Talk) 02:28, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Interwiki

Hey, To link to a site like commons, you can use interwiki links, like this commons: (link to commons). The wikimarkup for that is [[commons:]]. Similarily, you can link to a page on commons like this: commons:Main_Page ([[commons:Main_Page]]). That way you don't have to use external links, and it'll update them if the sites ever move URL.

Just noticed you were using external links to commons etc, so I thought I would point this out. Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:46, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Getting in first

If I'm not much mistaken, your RFA is due to finish up in about five minutes, with 87% support, making this a fairly straightforward and uncontroversial promotion case (although of course it is not a vote and the actioning bureaucrat must use xis discretion). I'm about to log off for the night, so I hope the actioning bureaucrat will forgive me if I preempt the apparently obvious result and congratulate you on the promotion. Well-deserved. FloraBase

Thanks for chipping in. You realise, I hope, that the ids have stayed the same only for species. For genera they have changed. Not sure about subspecies and varieties yet. Hesperian 03:02, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

It just occurred to me, rather too late I admit, that this means that if we simply updated Template:FloraBase to be the same as Template:FloraBase2, the only links that would break would be the non-species-level ones, as the level=s|f=090 stuff would simply be ignored by the template. This means we could stop converting species-level links to FloraBase2 right now, and instead adopt the following procedure:
  1. Change all the non-species template calls to FloraBase2;
  2. Update Template:FloraBase;
  3. Change all the calls to FloraBase2 back to FloraBase;
  4. Remove the spurious level=s|f=090 stuff from species-level calls at our leisure.

What do you reckon? Hesperian 03:19, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

List of botanists by author abbreviation

Maybe we need a note there that it is sorted by surname order --Melburnian 09:11, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
It says at the top that it is a list by botanist abbreviation. You could ask, 'what is the list for'? If I have an abbreviation "R.Br." and have no knowledge of botanical standards (as is the case) then logic says I would look under R. If it was a list by botanist name (and I knew the botanists surname), then I'd look under B. —Moondyne 09:24, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
You have a good point - I've put a proposal on the talk page of the article --Melburnian 11:31, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Melburnian, great user name! :D WikiTownsvillian 03:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

PlantNET

Evidently my bizarre decision to create the FloraBase citation template at {{Flora of Western Australia}} is contagious. Someone has created a PlantNET citation template at {{NSW Flora Online}}. I was thinking I might move that template to {{PlantNET}}, fix it up a bit, then push it into these pages. Any comments, suggestions, words of advice before I begin? Hesperian 00:05, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

On reflection, {{New South Wales Flora Online}} probably is a more appropriate name. Hesperian 00:08, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, given that the Flora of New South Wales is just one part of PlantNET (e.g. it covers topics such as "Aussie Algae"), its probably not quite right to use PlantNET for the template name. I think I slightly prefer {{NSW Flora Online}} over {{New South Wales Flora Online}} to keep it more condensed in edit view. I'm all for converting the cites to templates, as you know I'm a great fan/user of your APNI and FloraBase templates. While we are on the subject, do you think a template for eFloraSA[15] would be worthwhile? --Melburnian 03:25, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Good catch

Hey there, saw your revert and 100% agree, I had a guided wildflower tour and didn't check my assumption of what I'd heard it been called(Grevillea bipinnatifida).

I've just been through every(!) Grevillea photo in florabase for this, unfortunately there are a few pics there that are seemingly close matches but nothing I'd bet the house on, for example this but it doesn't seem spiky enough.

Any chance you would be able to help identify it? I'll have to delete it from commons though as it is wrongly named - the only thing worse that no picture is a wrong picture... I have a picture from further back of the complete plant if that would help?

If anyone is interested in helping or can identify WA wildflowers precisely, I have a few more to upload that I'm not 100% about also, if you're game? Any watchers of this page feel free to jump in...

I think I identifed this correctly but now I'm doubting myself...

Cheers SeanMack 12:55, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for agreeing to help. It's late now, but I'll get a few pics on here over the next few days. Cheers. SeanMack 15:37, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Our resident Stlyidium expert is Rkitko, User talk:Rkitko, you could drop a note on his talkpage, and for Drosera you could pace the image at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Carnivorous plants.--Melburnian 02:14, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

D. B. polycephala

Very nice, thankyou; I shall make it a priority to bring that article to a state worthy of the image.

In 1980 a "living collection" of dryandras was started at Cranbourne by Alf Salkin, to complement the collection of banksias that was already there. At one point there were over a hundred dryandra taxa growing there. Some never really established, lack of water killed some, P. cinn. killed some others, some died of old age without recruiting any seedlings, but they say there are still plenty there if you look hard enough.

Hesperian 12:26, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, Cavanagh (2006) says "the natural bush is beginning to recolonise the area", which suggests to me that it was never part of the open-to-the-public gardens. Hesperian 13:18, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Stylidium

Tonight when exercising the dogs just noticed there is a very smaller pink variety that has followed weeks and weeks after the 'some sort' above on your page - will try to get a close up and/or id in next day or so SatuSuro 13:25, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Ooops - if i just realise what is going on - maybe to the others will communicate - this was a diversion from the note that will be starting gastro's again next week sometime , sigh. Was photographing some very very sick banksias on the river side parks in ballina nsw last weekend sigh SatuSuro 13:28, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Odd - in a very overlawned area (rsl homes on side of river estuary) near where the last bridge before the ocean - about 3-5 metre high banksias - and a couple of them deadparrot dead - a few others struggling. might have an image of them amongst the wedding photos :( SatuSuro 23:34, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Any idea

You're ill-advised to ask me when you've got access to the editor of the Banksia Study Group, the one and only Cas Liber. Actually, perhaps I'm short-selling myself, as he confesses himself not all that great with not-much-cultivated western species, and I was able to identify this one immediately. It is Banksia praemorsa (Cut-leaf Banksia). We do have an image of the species, but it is of the yellow-flowered form, which is actually quite rare. Red-maroon inflorescences are far more common, so your image is a better exemplar. Hesperian 12:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Ask around for other opinions - you should have no trouble finding someone who will tell you its a Callistemon. ;-) Hesperian 12:50, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Any idea II

Grevillea bipinnatifida?!

I was about to add this to the imageless Grevillea bipinnatifida article, but was stopped in my tracks by the fact that the leaves are not at all bipinnatifid. Can you identify? Hesperian 00:50, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Following on from this this, SeanMack came up with this possible ID (Grevillea wilsonii) (see above) which I am reasonably confident is correct. --Melburnian 02:28, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, I see you've already been through this. I've just been playing around with FIST, which I've found to be an absolutely brilliant tool. Have added 44 images to Category:Flora of Australia articles this morning. Hesperian 02:32, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Just uploaded a picture of Grevillea bipinnatifida which I took on the weekend. I spotted FIST at Signpost, but haven't "driven" it yet...you have put it to good use! --Melburnian 03:09, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks again. Hesperian 11:14, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

It's a tad washed out in places, but beggars can't be choosers. Only 163 image-less taxa to go :-( Hesperian 11:53, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

thanks!

ID

Can you id a banksia I photographed at Lakes Entrance, Victoria, at [16]? (Pic of the whole tree and a closeup of one flower)

I may try to improve on the tree one, but it is 35 out here and I'm feeling it :P Orderinchaos 02:06, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I can give you the species; Cas could probably give subspecies. But I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader for now ;-) Hesperian 02:30, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it's a Banksia integrifolia, I'd guess the subspecies as Banksia integrifolia subsp. integrifolia, having perused the fine featured article on the topic :) --Melburnian (talk) 03:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks guys - another one, see above link again for next two. It may not be a local, it was in somebody's garden, but I thought my shots were good anyway :) Orderinchaos 02:49, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Yep, it's a local. Hesperian 03:27, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Well...local to South Africa ;). They are two different cultivars of Leucospermum - nice shots! --Melburnian (talk) 06:17, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Town halls

Belated Merry Christmas btw :) I saw some mention that you're doing stuff with town halls - I'm finally getting all the old LGAs done, do you have any information (other than location, which I have from the 1993 Melway) about these? Orderinchaos 07:06, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) Feel free to add any references you know of to the LGA ones too (I see you've done that with Williamstown) - I'm going to do all for the Melbourne region, including Mornington Peninsula and Geelong, but don't know if I should do any of the rural ones. This partly comes about as the result of a massive amount of research I did in SLV during a trip over there in November, as well as a handy bit of bidding on Ebay for old Melways. (Next time we shall definitely have to catch up - I'm guessing late 2008 at this stage) Orderinchaos 09:01, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Yay! After two weeks of work, almost all the LGAs are done and in - I only have the Shire of Eltham and a few southern cities (Sandringham -> Chelsea/Dandenong) to do. So now I suppose it's a matter of figuring out how best to enhance them. Orderinchaos 01:14, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
LOL... yeah I'm trying to get it done and out of the way so I can get onto the rest of my backlog (WA politics etc). Orderinchaos 01:51, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
I know that they say that you never precede any difficult manoeuvre with anything more predictive than "watch this", but keep an eye on my contribs over the next couple of hours. My recent contribs will give some clue as to what I'm up to. Orderinchaos 05:49, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to say that you're doing a fantastic job with getting photos of some of these rural town halls. It adds a nice touch to the article. Rebecca (talk) 11:21, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words and the copyedit. Making lists is trivial - it taxes nothing but my gumption. The hard bit is writing nice prose, especially on subjects about which I know next to nothing. As a result, the main article is a patchwork of thorough sections, half-cut sections, and stubby one sentence sections. Learning about oceanography was fun, but I confess to being too terrified to make a start on the geology section yet. I'll get there eventually. Hesperian 02:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Volunteer for the Plant Project -- eh?

Nice of you to volunteer for the plant project. They evaluate articles without reading them. Can you provide me a list of articles in which you evaluated without reading so I know that you are one of them before I revert your edits? -- Carol 23:12, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I read all the articles that I evaluate, so no. If you have concerns with the evaluation process for WP:PLANTS you should take it to the talk page there --Melburnian (talk) 23:39, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi

If you ever run out of things to do (as if), I just discovered, to my great surprise, that Stackhousia is a red link. Hesperian 12:07, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks mate. This place spoils me; you drop one hint and viola! it is done. Can you imagine how miserable I would be if I expected such service from my employees, my children, my wife? Hesperian 10:42, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Not intended. Which makes you the clever one, not me. Hesperian 12:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

With the understanding that you can start to ignore me at any time, I thought I'd point out an even more outrageous redlink: Ptilotus! What the hell is going on, man? At a guess, this would be the most species-diverse Australian genus not to have an article. Hesperian 13:24, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

We call them Mulla Mulla over here. Which is a much better name (nerrr). Hesperian 00:18, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

"blued one red link but created 17 new ones in the process". How many you say? Over a hundred this time I think. :-) It would be interesting to plot unique redlinks by time. Logic says it should peak at some point, but I suspect we haven't reached that point yet. Thanks again; you're a dynamo. Hesperian 12:05, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Okay, will do; thanks. BTW I have just this minute discovered that we must say adieu to our beloved Halosarcia.[19] Hesperian 12:44, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
I was pondering the same question. I think it would be most in keeping with the principles of systematic botany (which maintain Halosarcia as a valid and well-defined, albeit non-current, name) to create a separate article on Tecticornia, and overwrite this article with a redirect. That way, if this decision were to be overturned, or if someone decided to write an article on the defunct taxon, the article history would be in the right place.
However, it is entirely possible that I have thought about this way too hard, and we should just do the obvious thing.

persdict

G'day,

Just thought I'd share my discovery for today. Here you can download a dictionary file containing all names of WA plant species, the idea being that you can add the file as a custom dictionary to Word, and terms like "argyrophylla" will no longer come up as spelling errors. If you're running Firefox, as I am, you can achieve the same by copy-pasting the contents of the file into persdict.dat in your Mozilla profile directory. Of course it would be better if it covered all of Australia, but I suspect this will get you 90% of the way.

And while I've got you, here's a mystery for you. Today I heard mention of a plant recently discovered in WA, which turns out to be the most basal flowering plant yet discovered, preceding even the split between monocots and dicots. Amazingly, it was found growing in a Kenwick truck yard. So far about a hundred of the world's leading plant taxonomists have made the pilgrimage to the sacred truck yard to view the plant. I wrote down the genus on a scrap of paper, but now I can't find it. Google has failed me. :-(

Hesperian 11:32, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

It turns out I'd scrawled a couple of words into Notepad and saved it on my laptop desktop - "a scrap of paper" indeed.
The genus is Hydatella, not a new genus by any stretch of the imagination. Research last year placed the Hydatellaceae near the root of the flowering plants. I am left wondering where the Kenwick truck yard comes into it, and whether someone has made a lot out of very little. Perhaps a new, most basal species has been discovered. I don't know. Hesperian 11:07, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

You are correct - I have the wrong heli ! ... will fix up this weekend - Peripitus (Talk) 02:54, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Elvis?

No sighted here yet (darling range) - but maybe one day - grastrolubium seems far away in one sense - about to start again soon - have been trawling various arts in euc and others that dont have very good regional locality identification in lead sentences - some eucalypts are abysmal - the south west i am choosing is a good link for the wiki user not geographically ept in the western australian sense - but my system of editing on this is closer to chaos theory than heisenberg - distraction and real life assisting SatuSuro 06:42, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

[20] comes to mind as a stub state which has inadequate lead sentence or locality info, and despite what might be a very limited distribution to correlate to the map - a very poor cousin to some others (articles that is) SatuSuro 07:31, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
The stub on reflection is not bad compared to some - I suppose it was a phase last year exposed to some eds trying for GA and FA thingoes - the importance of having a clear lead sentence that spells out where things are - sometimes no mention of australia or the region of location at all - but your point about the article is true - it is a good stub that way i agree SatuSuro 08:15, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Florero

Hi, I noticed you are helping to remove spam on Houseplant. I have notified the offending editor, but in the process of expanding the houseplant list, I noticed the two large photos in that section have very prominent tags for this very same Florero product that spammers have been advertising on Houseplant. Not that a commercial product can't have photos taken of it, but I am almost positive that the uploaders of these photos (some months ago) were also involved in spamming. Is this a conflict of interest, and should some sort of action be taken concerning these not-so-good faith photos? The photos are very clear, but it irks me to see people seemingly taking advantage of this system.--♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦ (talk) 02:28, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
