Sources REQUIRED edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add or change content please cite a reliable source for the content of your edit. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Please don't make other people do the work that you should be doing when you create an article. 69.181.249.92 (talk) 13:44, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dear 69.181.249.92, thanks for the warm WELCOME.
Lying on the Zhujiang River and featuring many large and small islands, bridges are an important aspect of the Chinese city Guangzhou. I've just added some basic information about a few of the most notable ones (Renmin, Jiefang, Haizhu, Jiangwan, Haiyin, Guangzhou, Huanan, and Pazhou bridges).
I intend to add detail to them over the next few days, and I strongly object to your suggestion that I added these articles to create work for other people. Though I think even as they stand today, these articles add to the encyclopedia.
As for your request for references, I must humbly ask you to explain to me how I can reference a bridge. According to the Wikipedia guidelines, one should cite sources,
  • When adding material that is challenged or likely to be challenged
  • When quoting someone
  • When writing about living persons
  • When checking content added by others
  • When writing an image caption
  • When uploading an image
From what I can gather, I do neither. So I must ask for your help. If you can’t offer any, I suggest you simply go out and check if the bridges are indeed still standing.
While I do appreciate the policing work people put in to maintain a high level of quality in articles, I must say your bad faith towards me is not exactly inspiring. Please keep in mind the quote you used above, "Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia". Meiyou (talk) 14:25, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
The requirement for sources is covered in two policies - Notability and Verifiablity. It is impossible to determine the notability of a subject if there are no references, and without references a subject cannot be verified. While I don't have any reason to doubt that the bridge exists, I do have serious doubts about it's notability and no way to verify such. I don't assume bad faith as much as a lack of knowledge of the policies. 69.181.249.92 (talk) 14:52, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Much better. I particularly like the pics on Haizhu Bridge. And I apologize if I came across a bit strong. We get a lot of new articles that don't have references, and currently have a backlog going back well over 4 years.69.181.249.92 (talk) 06:22, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for coming back and thanks for the apology.
No more than one hour after I had created my first article and before I had any chance to continue the work you wrote to me in bold types "Please don’t make other people do the work that you should be doing". If that’s not assuming bad faith (in breach of a central Wikipedia guideline), I don’t know what is.
Your tone was like a punch in the face and it left me wondering why I should bother with Wikipedia at all.
You shouldn’t get so focused on your backlog that you forget the big picture. Wikipedia needs contributors, and for that we (you and I and the rest of us) have specific guidelines designed to secure recruitment.
I'm done with this now. Peace. Meiyou (talk) 08:39, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
