Speedy deletion nomination of Users:meghan.lyn.fischer/Sandbox edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bluefist (talk) 01:59, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi edit

Hi Meghan, thanks for your note. I'd be more than happy to be your mentor. I'm not entirely sure what I need to do, but I'll keep an eye over your edits and you can click here to leave me a message, if you have any questions while you're editing. I saw you already found Pesticides in the United States, which looks as if it could do with a great deal of work. If you need any help trying to find sources, let me know and I'll try to find things that might be suitable. I'll drop a template below that should contain links to pretty much everything you could ever need in terms of our complicated policies and guidelines, but at the moment, the most important thing is to BE BOLD!. Happy editing. SmartSE (talk) 22:55, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello edit

Hi Meghan, I noticed you've started to gather some sources for your article and have few pointers for you. First, if you can, try and use sources that discuss pesticide regulations from a global perspective rather than only the USA. I had a quick search in google books and found this book which might be useful and there are probably more (I just searched for "pesticide regulations"). Second, some of the sources you've listed are not necessarily ideal - for example this and this are press releases, which should normally be replaced with alternative sources if they can be found. As you're citing scientific papers, you might find the templates {{cite doi}} and {{cite jstor}} helpful, with these you can just add a doi or jstor number and then a computer will write out the full reference for you, so for example adding <ref>{{cite jstor|2138811}}</ref> will end up putting: Cropper, M. L.; Evans, W. N.; Berardi, S. J.; Ducla-Soares, M. M.; Portney, P. R. (1992). "The Determinants of Pesticide Regulation: A Statistical Analysis of EPA Decision Making". The Journal of Political Economy. 100 (1): 175–197. doi:10.1086/261812. in the reference section. I also noticed you'd had a problem with a page you started being deleted, you should just work in your sandbox first, before writing anything in the main space. Drop a note on my talk page once you've done some more and I'll take another look. I'm going to be a bit busier than I anticipated earlier in the year but will hopefully be able to get back to you within a few days. SmartSE (talk) 19:55, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it is probably easiest if you drop me an email (Special:EmailUser/Smartse) when you want me to take a look. I'll try to attend to it as soon as I can. Thanks SmartSE (talk) 09:06, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for the information. We have started to post to another section of my talk page the actual article that we will be moving before too long to the main space. Whenever you have a chance to look it over that would be wonderful. Thanks! (19:26, 29 March 2011 (UTC))

Hi again. The draft is certainly coming along - keep up the good work. As I mentioned before though, it would be much better if you could expand the scope to cover the regulation of pesticides around the world, rather than just in the US. You could take a look at regulation of genetic engineering to see how you could go about covering this (this is a new article and is in no way perfect, as you can read on my talk page, but it deals with the regulation of GM plants well). Some of the nitty gritty details could also be removed, as it would be better to use books and papers (secondary sources) rather than those from the EPA (primary sources) as then the article can look more at what other people think of the regulations. I also noticed that you've copy and pasted from the sources you've quoted, whilst this is legal as the EPA is a federal institution, it would definitely be better to rewrite the inforrmation in your own words, or as I've already mentioned find secondary sources which discuss the regulations. I haven't checked all the draft for copy and pasting, but if you've used it elsewhere, please be sure to rewrite it ASAP. The "Costs and Benefits of Pesticide Use" is interesting but wouldn't belong in an article on the regulation of pesticides and would be better in the pesticide article. Looking at the that also made me notice the section on regulation in that article, it's poorly written but contains some (unrefenced) information on international regulations which it would be good to include in the article. It would be great if your article could be the parent article for a small section in the main article, using a summary style and a link to your article, like we already have for environmental effects etc. There are a few instances where you've used (author) year citations but don't provide the full citation. Can you add the full references? The templates I talked about before might be helpful. Lastly, the introduction is unreferenced and reads as if you've written it based on your own knowledge rather than based on sources. I know that it is all correct, but you need to make sure you have a way to back it up with a reference. To be honest, I don't think you need to concentrate on the ancient history either. You should probably start by explaining what a pesticide is, why they need to be regulated and when these regulations began to appear. I have no idea about it, but it's hard to believe that there were no regulations governing the use of pesticides before silent spring too, there must have been some kind of testing? (DDT#Use_in_the_1940s_and_1950s and onwards and [1] might be useful by the way). That's it for now, as I said before it's better to send me an email, it was only good luck that I noticed your note today and had time to take a look. Thanks and good luck SmartSE (talk) 07:40, 30 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
