While I agree that gossip columns and something like the National Enquirer having improbably merit, I've encountered admins who refuse external links at all on the stated theory that no links keep the peace. To me, that reduces the worth of the article. I'd rather have a couple of poor links and be able to judge their worth for myself than have no links at all.

A second situation occurs when a link conflicts with a person's belief system. Often the reasons (or excuses) given for removing links is that they are "too liberal" or "too right wing" and in at least one case both! (Arianna Huffington) I saw a CBS News reference deleted because a user deemed it "left wing media".

My own opinion is that I'd rather have too many links than too few.
