Miep Gies

I reverted the word from husband to partner in that part of the sentence for a purely grammatical reason. The article states:

"She became a close friend of his family as did her partner, Jan Gies (October 18, 1905–January 26, 1993) whom she married in July 1941"

It wouldn't be grammatical to say that Miep married her husband. She didn't. She married her partner, or fiance, and he thus became her husband, as it says. Yallery Brown 00:19, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Matt, thanks for your contributions to the Reed page. However, you recently added this line: "Actual insiders of Reed, however, can cite many instances of students being busted simply for violating drug and alcohol laws too conspicuously" to the page. As I am sure you know, the Drug Use section has been the subject of much recent controversy, and we struggled to have every line of it supported by a citation from a public source. This page: http://web.reed.edu/community_safety/information/crime/crime_statistics.html contains some crime-related stats that you might want to use to make your point, and there may be other public records. I don't disagree that there have been cops and arrests on campus, but in any case is I would request that you consider rewording or restating your point to make it WP:V. Suri Cruise

It is considered spineless to disassociate yourself from your own opinions by the use of the passive voice. Further, I consider it vandalism, to add a "fact" tag without damn good reason. In this instance, the "fact" in dispute can scarcely be disputed. The only objection raised was that the surname, "Cruise", could not yet be ascertained. But she has been referred to by this name in countless media outlets already. The addition of the "fact" tag was purely mean-spirited obstructionism on the part of the "Delete" cadre. Hey, it got your attention, didn't it? Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with profanity on wikipedia per se, as long as it's on edit summaries or talk and not in articles. Yeh it got pretty bad, but I agree 'cleaner' edit summary would be better (btw, I was brought there by tawkerbot2 alerts). Gaddafi

Why do you keep removing Gaddafi from that list? To most folk he is "Gaddafi" or "Colonel Gaddafi", and his first name is not well known. So where's the problem? --MacRusgail 10:57, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

The vast majority of references to him that I have seen and heard refer to him as Muammar Gaddafi. That's why--I seldom have seen his surname used without his given name. Matt Gies 16:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I have to admit, I didn't know his first name until I looked it up. I'm used to thinking of him by his surname, or "Col. G./Q.". The only worry I had was that Muammar may be some kind of title, like the "U", in "U Thant" rather than a real first name. --MacRusgail 16:56, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Carl Proujan

The Ry Cooder page states that he was a roomate at Reed, though this was added by the same anon who added him to the Reed page, so is suspect. The prior argument was not about whether or not he was an alum, but whether he was notable. As the author of quite a number of natural history books, I would consider him notable, but not worth the fight with the Reed page's favorite troll. I'll go down to Powell's one of these days and look at a book cover and see if it is listed there. Looking in the thesis tower isn't really reliable -- regrettably, many old theses have disappeared, and as you noted, he may not have graduated from Reed. - Gnetwerker 00:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Table of keyboard shortcuts

You mention a "formatting problem" on Table of keyboard shortcuts regarding using table header markup ("!"); I don't see this problem unless it's the header formatting itself, which is intended to set off new menus. What are you seeing? (re my talk) æ² ✆ 2007‑02‑12t22:44z

I find it quite distracting to have some commands bolded and all the rest in normal text. Perhaps what is in order is to break this one long table into several tables, each with its own obvious (as in, at the top of its own table) header. Matt Gies 23:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

This isn't really my battle, but for what it's worth you may tell the fellow that, in my opinion, "emanated from", while technically and grammatically correct, is simply bad writing by reason of being obfuscatory and imprecise. It sounds pompous when all that is meant to be conveyed is the origin of a broadcast. Wikipedia has a lot of readers, and I'd be so presumptuous as to say that wrestling fans are not generally among the most literate (present company excluded)--so such a circumlocution is a disservice to the predominant readership. I see you've started fixing a lot more vandalism. That is good. When you fix vandalism, you should consider leaving the vandal a warning from the WP:WARN set.
