Speedy deletion nomination of Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, society, or group, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. jd22292 (Jalen D. Speedy deletion nomination of FFNC 1961 edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on FFNC 1961 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Draft:Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club edit

Just a friendly heads up. I've moved Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club to Draft:Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club to give you a chance to work on it. However, you've got a long ways to go before it has any chance of being an article in main space. Please read up on the notability guidelines and how to write your first article.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 01:31, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2017 election voter message edit

Hello, MarkPringle. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:North Coast Representative side that played New Zealand in 1923.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:North Coast Representative side that played New Zealand in 1923.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:46, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Help me! edit

Please help me with... adding images. Don't take it personally, but the guidance on adding images is appalling :-) I added an image to Wikipedia which has now become an orphan because the instructions are so complex and confused.

For example this is the nonsensical advice I received: The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use.

All of which is incorrect. The image was free and I received permission to use it on Wikipedia ;-) MarkPringle (talk) 07:44, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the use of the image on the article, the WP:Picture tutorial will likely be helpful.
Regarding the licensing, you wrote on the file page that the copyright holder is "Unknown". How then can you assert that the image was free and you had received permission to use it on Wikipedia? The copyright holder cannot have been the one giving you that permission, and no one else's "permission" is relevant.
Also, a Wikipedia-only or non-commercial use-only license would not be considered "free enough"; we need images to be released by the copyright holder under a license that allows everybody to re-use and modify the image for any purpose, including commercial purposes. And we'll need evidence of that licensing; the easiest way to provide such evidence is to have the copyright holder send a note via email to permissions-commons wikimedia.org. You can find a standard release form at WP:Declaration of consent for all enquiries.
In this particular case, the image indeed is free, but not for any reason you mention, and not due to any permission you may have received. Rather, it is a photograph taken before 1955, and according to Australian copyright law, all such photos are in the public domain (which in particular means that whoever gave you that "permission" was not in a position to deny you permission because they don't have any rights regarding the photo). I'll upload a copy of the photo on the Wikimedia Commons and add the appropriate tags. Huon (talk) 14:58, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here you are: File:North Coast Representative side that played New Zealand in 1923.jpg. Huon (talk) 18:39, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Huon for confirming in my mind that the people who provide help are self-righteous know-it-alls. You don't seem to understand that you are part of the problem; you make it soooo complicated that mug users like me find it impossible to actually use. And when you explain something it's so long-winded and complicated that I just glaze over. So much for the so-called democracy of Wikipedia ... free and equal access for everyone and all that hey old chum.

Appreciate you restoring the pic. So how do I add it to the text? I want it at a decent size. Last time I tried to add it, it ended up as a useless low resolution thumbnail. That was not what I wanted so I removed it. Cheers. MarkPringle (talk) 09:48, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mark. As you will note from the warning below, which while somewhat premature, illustrates our lack of tolerance for these sort of comments. First and foremost, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and writing an encyclopedia is frankly not a task which mug users are very capable of. We explicitly don't guarantee free and equal access to editing privileges, and in fact competence is required. Huon made a number of matter of fact statements, which while terse, were perhaps brought on by the impression you were being intentionally misleading about the author of the image (saying that it was unknown and then saying you had permission). Wikipedia editors are volunteers and often provide assistance to tens of thousands of people. You are encouraged to keep this in mind when commenting in the future. TheDragonFire (talk) 12:40, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
For help adding images, I'd point you towards User:Yunshui/Images for beginners, which explains the process in pretty much the simplest way possible. If I hadn't already written that essay, mind you, I'd have passed this help request by; your response to Huon above is not acceptable in a collaborative environment such as Wikipedia. You'll find people are a lot more helpful if you avoid calling them self-righteous know-it-alls. Yunshui  16:19, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
