From Boneyard90

Thank you for the welcoming note! Actually, I do have a small problem (already!) that maybe you can provide some advice or insight.
Recently, I edited a paragraph of the entry Castle. The next day my contribution was "undone", with the explanation that the issue had been discussed in the FAC, and that a "consensus" had been reached. I checked the Talk:Castle page and the FAC, and I see no consensus. In fact, it looks like the majority of contributors share my point of view. The one editor, who seems to monopolize decisions regarding this entry, hhas perhaps one supporter. I don't want to "undo" his "undo", because he can do the same, and it seems pointless until I either get his cooperation or mediation of some kind.
Should I get a Third Party Opinion? What do you suggest?
Thanks! Boneyard90 (talk) 15:08, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Boneyard90, thank you for your message.
I think your idea of getting a Third Party Opinion is good. You can find out more in the Wikipedia:Third opinion article.

Hello_

I hope you've been well, Marek. An editor I trust has asked for a rev/del of your user page history. Personally, I don't see anything that warrants it, but I would like to hear your opinion. If you have concerns regarding any particular edit I will check into the matter further. See ya 'round Tiderolls 03:39, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Tide, my userpage has been vandalised more times than I can count
Nothing particularly offensive (in comparison to some previous things), but thanks for removing it anyway :-)
Cheers -- Marek.69 talk 03:47, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
That was my take as well. I have a rather thick skin having done mostly vandal-reverting in my time here, but I can understand we're not all the same. The edits are hidden unless someone goes looking for them. Thanks for your input. If I ever can be of assistance don't hesitate to ring my bell. Tiderolls 03:56, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
Cheers Tide, thanks for the offer. Stay well! :-) -- Marek.69 talk 04:01, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Pending Changes

Hi there, is this correct? You accept or refuse certain edits on certain articles, a sort of gatekeeper. I edited Republic of Macedonia but did not see my edit there. 1/ How does the procedure work? 2/Who proposed to put this article on the pending changes list? 3/Is there anywhere we can find that information? 4/ How many reviewers are there per article? 5/ thanks :-) Politis (talk) 22:48, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Politis, thank you for your message.
"Pending-changes protection" is currently being tested on a limited number of articles during a two-month trial. Articles under PC protection are open for editing, but changes will be visible to readers who are not logged-in only after being checked for obvious vandalism and clear errors. To become visible to everyone, the edits have to be reviewed by a user with the appropriate access, known as a "reviewer". Reviewers are editors who have enough experience to identify obvious vandalism and other clear mistakes.
You can read more about this trial on Wikipedia:Pending changes and Wikipedia:Protection policy
If you have any more questions, please come back to me, I'll be happy to help :-)
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 22:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

OK, a bit complicated at first site :-(. Where do editors who are neither anonymous or a new users stand? Who, for instance, decided to put Republic of Macedonia or Greece into the 'pending changes'? It all seems a bit awkward when before we had to 'locked' system. Politis (talk) 23:15, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Undo

Marek can u please explain me how to undo older edits???:(:$ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Giorgis94 (talkcontribs) 14:39, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Giorgis94, thank you for your message.
If you look in the articles history, you should be able to see an 'undo' link for each edit. Click on this and add an edit summary of your reason for undoing it.
If the edit is old, the undo may not work as there may be a conflict with a newer edit. In this case the only way to undo is to change the article manually, removing the part you consider incorrrect.
I hope this helps :-)

Hi there, I cannot seem to find who has the right to have his/her edits 'automatically accepted'. And can formerly suspended administrators or editors have such a right over articles he/she was banned? Thanks. Politis (talk) 09:06, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your welcome note! For me it’s a pleasure to give my contribution in such a beautiful project. And, persons like you, give the strength to believe in a better world. I don’t know if you understand Portuguese, but here we have a say: “todos é que sabemos tudo” (only all of us, can know all) I think this the real meaning of life. And Wikipedia is the way I found to give my contribution. As you asking, I think what I will need most is how to insert photos in page layout. I’m a photographer, so, my major contribution will be photographic material. I appreciated your message. Big huh. Please excuse the delay in getting back to you, but I am currently attending Wikimania 2010 in Gdańsk, Poland and my laptop has been unable to get a wireless connection. :-(
In answer to your question, in order to insert photos in page layout, you will need to add code similar to this:
[[File:Pl gdansk zuraw dlugiepobrzeze2006.jpg|left|thumb|200px|The medieval port crane in Gdańsk.]]
This will produce:

The medieval port crane in Gdańsk.
For more information on images see Wikipedia:Images.
You can upload your own images at Special:Upload.
However, before that you should familiarise yourself with the information on Wikipedia:Uploading images.
For more information about copyrights please read Wikipedia:Copyrights
If you have produced the photographs yourself then you should click on the It is entirely my own work link and follow the instructions from there.
If you require any further help, please do not hesitate to ask. I should be home by the end of the week

Harrys of London

hi marek

you might remember me - a few months ago you helped me get started here on wikipedia - its such a maze, having a person to talk to has been very helpful. Now i am helping two friends who have cool fashion companies to develop an entry for their companies. I've done the first one, but not sure how to make it "live" - and want to be sure it complies with the rules of Wikipedia. The first entry is for Harrys of London - a Richemont Group owned shoe and accessories company based here in London. Could you take a look and help me get it going? Thank you for the welcome message (to 67.237.123.183, after the Corinth edit). As a result, I've managed to make an account after years of lurking here, and I'm looking forward to learning how to contribute for a change.

Just one question - can the user talk page and user contributions for my IP address be merged somehow with the account I just created, or do they have to sit there all lonely and abandoned now that I've graduated to registered user status?  :) Thanks! Lirantha (talk) 01:15, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Lirantha, thank you for your message.
I'm not too sure, but I think that your IP contributions cannot be merged with your account. Sorry!
You can always put a brief note on your user page if you wish, stating something like: ‘This user has also edited as IP 84.45.208.245 (user contributions)’

harrys

hi marek - can you advise how i can make the harrys page live? --Kaskaad (talk) 23:19, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Kaskaad, thank you for your message
I've pasted some tips below to help you start your first article:
  1. Try editing existing articles to get a feel for writing and for using the mark-up language in use at Wikipedia.
  2. Search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject, perhaps under a different title. If the article already exists, feel free to make any constructive edits you feel are necessary.
  3. Gather references both to use as source(s) of the information you will include and also to demonstrate notability of your article's subject matter. References to blogs, personal websites and MySpace don't count—we need reliable sources. Extra care should be taken to make sure that articles on living persons have sources -- articles about living people without sources may be deleted.
  4. Consider requesting feedback. You can request feedback on articles you would like to create in a number of places, including the talk page of a related WikiProject or the Drawing Board.
  5. Consider creating the article first in your user space. As a registered user, you have your own user space. You can start the new article there, on a subpage; you can get it in shape, take your time, ask other editors to help work on it, and only move it into the "live" Wikipedia once it is ready to go. To create your own subpage, see here. When the new article is ready for "prime time", you can move it into the main area. (Note: the Article Wizard has an option to create these kind of draft pages.)
Remember the article you create will be deleted quickly if it is not acceptable. Wikipedia has a new pages patrol division where people check your new articles shortly after you create them.
I've had a look at your article: User:Kaskaad/Harrys of london
First of all it is lacking references. References are required to demonstrate notability of your article's subject matter.
Also, you have to be very careful to write the article in an encyclopaedic tone so it does not read like an advert for the company, which would not conform to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
Just a few pointers for now...
When you feel the article is ready to be moved to the main space, or have any other questions, please come back to me.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 00:30, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Dear Marek69, in the near future, when I'm not that busy, I wished to become an administrator in Wikipedia. Do you know what are the steps to become one? Thank you. --Rochelimit (talk) 21:02, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Rochelimit, thank you for your message. I'm probably not the best person to ask about adminship, as I've yet to run.
My advice would be to monitor the events at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship for a while to see what the community is looking for in an admin and how the process works. :-)

GOCE Newsletter

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Newbie question: Dispute

Hi Marek I came across this page that I wanted to dispute independence. But not sure how, and wanted to do it the right way. I have some experience of wikis, but not done this.

Do I just add tag: e.g.

or is it only admins?

I have come across pages before, and wanted to add comment like this. This page is one I saw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranny_of_the_majority

I searched FAQ, but (probably!) missed the topic. Any advice from your experience?

Sroen (talk) 11:31, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Sroen, thank you for your message
As far as I know, anyone is allowed to add the ‘disputed’ template to an article.
Just do it the same way as you did here, i.e. by adding {{Disputed|date=July 2010}} to the article.
You can find more information on this in Template:Disputed.
If I can be of further assistance, please come back to me.

IP Question

Hi Marek69, I have a problem with a fact on the Haplogroup N (y-chromosome) page. I tried to establish a talk about it, but I get a message telling that I have made an unconstructive edit on some page as an IP-user.

Is this now a problem, since I have never made an edit on Wikipedia? Somebody else has had the same IP-number.

I am still concerned with the N haplogroup page. One particular mistake there. Otherwise a good page.

Marjainen (talk) 17:48, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Marjainen, thank you for your message.
Don't worry - this is a very common problem for IP editors.
The most likely reason for this is that you have a dynamic IP address, which means your IP could be different every time you turn your computer on.
The message in question is likely intended for someone else. Ignore it. (You may delete it if you wish)
As far as the N haplogroup article. If you feel there is a mistake there, you are free to correct it.
After all, Wikipedia is ‘the encylopaedia anyone can edit’ :-)

Haplogroup N (y-chromosome), a mistake

Marek,
Thank you very much for your kind answer! I doubt that I have all the necessary sources available for editing the problem part myself. Also it seems difficult.
First I would like to discuss the matter with the writer. Is that possible? How would I go about it?
I like Wikipedia a lot and use it often. I want to thank you and all the people who work for it. Great job! Thank you! Marjainen (talk) 01:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi again Marjainen, thank you for your message and your kind words.
If it is the Haplogroup N (Y-DNA) article you are referring to, you can start a discussion on the article's talk page, which can be found here: Talk:Haplogroup N (Y-DNA) or by clicking on the ‘talk’ tab at the top of the article in question.
As with most articles on Wikipedia there will probably be more that one writer of the article. You can find a list of contributors by hitting the ‘history’ tab.
I wish you Good Luck and Happy Wiki-ing.
Please let me know if you require any further assistance. :-)

Google Maps references & similar

Hi, Marek,

I put in a few dozen Google Map references against some of the Mazes in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze#Mazes_open_to_the_public

Someone else moved these to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze#References

This has the effect of bouncing the reader twice before going to Google Maps.

In other words, it means that we cannot Right-Hand-Click on the Google Map link to open the link in a new 'Background' Tab.

So, for instance, I want to look at:

   * The Maze, Perth, Western Australia[15]
   * Ashcombe Maze, Shoreham, Victoria, Australia,[16]
   * Mintaro Maze, Mintaro, South Australia,[17]
   * A Maze'N Things,[18] Phillip Island (Victoria), Australia[19]

We cannot right-hand-click on 15, 16, 17, 19 to open 4 new Background Tabs, each with a Google-Map showing a maze.

What we get instead, is the same Wikipedia "Maze" page opened 4 more times at slightly different Reference targets.

In other words, using double-links like this reduces the user experience.

What do you think?

Thank you for the pleasant greeting!

As I am new a wikipedian I was wondering whether you could suggest me a wikiproject that fits my desire. I want to contribute to the articles written in Romanian. I can speak English quit well enough to translate an article from English to Romanian. I would be glad if you helped me! :)

How do I...

Marek69:

I'm a professional writer and editor, I use the Wikipedia daily, and usually edit spelling and grammar when I run across errors in my research. While working on some research this morning I accessed the "Maccabees" page:

in the box to the top right there is a list of Maccabee Commanders, some of the names have crosses beside them, which mean killed in action. I, as a Jew and Israeli, object to those crosses, which are a distinct Christian symbol. The Maccabees were Jewish (that's what the revolt was about).

Is there a generic symbol we can put there, one, and two, I have no idea how to work inside those boxes and would appreciate some help. If you'd like to fix it, it would be great.

Shalom from Jerusalem Yo Menashe YoMenashe (talk) 12:53, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Done (sorry for jumping in here, saw the note briefly appear on the article talk-page) Adding |alt=yes to the {{KIA}} tags for their names changes the cross-symbol to "(K.I.A.)". DMacks (talk) 13:23, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Dear Marek69

Thank you for your kind welcome message (and the cookies)! I do not quite understand what prompted it, since I edit here since 2007... But since you offered to answer questions, I do have one: I am using Windows and Firefox, and whenever I come back to Wikipedia I need to login. I always check the box 'Keep me logged in...' but I am always logged out when I leave the browser. Many of my edits in the past have therefore been made anonymously, because I forgot to login. Any ideas? --Patto (talk) 07:55, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Poland

Hi Marek, I've run into a Polish problem and wondered if you could help me? this chap is died on PL wiki twenty years before his EN wiki has him taking his latest known job. This is one of several Poland related anomalies I have at Wikipedia:Database reports/Living people on EN wiki who are dead on other wikis, can you suggest someone who might be interested in fixing them, or even better get an equivalent report for Poland at meta:Death anomalies table? PS see you Sunday? ϢereSpielChequers 08:56, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Marek69

Question

Hi marek, I'm sorry I didn't post here when you first contacted me (was new, still figuring out some stuff) with a nice plate of cookies, which is a brilliant idea for a new user welcome and one of the best I've seen! Much appreciated, and well done. Just wondering what the best policy is for dealing with an attack on a talk page. A change I did was reverted, and when I made the case on the talk page, I was accused of being a sockpuppet (a thoroughly amusing term may I add) and it was heavily implied that I had deliberately added "misinformation", I guess to push my POV? Anyway, I initially replied, in response to which he just edited his first message (and which in my opinion was an edit which in no way countered what I had responded). I've left it for a couple of days, but want to redo the edit I did. What would be the best thing to do. Ask someone else about the edit? I really don't feel like attempting a discussion with the other person, don't see it turning out too well. Again, sorry for not replying when you first talked. It was very appreciated though! Chipmunkdavis (talk) 13:31, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

reverted sentence

Today, I made a correction of fact to the Social Liberalism page. A user, TFD, has reverted my changes and claims that my changes were vandalism and unconstructive. I have 2 questions. First, how do I contest this? and second, how do I add a disclaimer to a section which says that a particular sentence is being debated and is contentious. I have seen this comment block before, but I do not know how to add it myself. Detah (talk) 16:03, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I am sorry for my strong expressions

You were right. I am sorry for my explosion there, won't happen again. Just if you could have a look at my interlocutor. He was speaking in future for God's sake. There was nothing Wikipedia like in what he wrote and it really drives me mad that you let such coments still standing. The Guild of Copy-Editors – September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invite you to participate in the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 September at 23:59 (UTC). The goals for this drive are to eliminate 2008 from the queue and to reduce the backlog to fewer than 5,000 articles.

Sign-up has already begun at the September drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GoCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Message

Hi, I think that this voice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannahannah doesn't respect the guidelines of verifiability/reliability. Who is this guy "Christopher Siren"? What authority does he have to state such things, without any others' quotes or references? Is he an anthropologist, an assyriologist, an accredited expert with any BA in MO literature/religion, or what else? Any external references? Notes? Quotes? Otherwise I do not think this is a serious stuff. Cheers. BCtl (talk) 22:30, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Polish langauge assistance?

Hi. :) I am in need of a neutral contributor who can read Polish to compare a source with a single edit, looking to see if the translation follows the source closely enough to constitute a copyright concern. I'd like to resolve the matter discreetly, as there are real life identifies and concerns with reputation involved. You were suggested to me as somebody who might be able to help. Would you by any chance be willing and able to help out here? If you don't have time or would prefer not, please let me know, and I'll look for somebody else. (Since you do not edit that often, I am also e-mailing you this request, but for transparency do need to ask here, in spite of my hopes for discretion.) I'll be watchlisting your talk page. Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:41, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Update: I have found somebody who can help with this, so I am no longer in need of assistance. I appreciate your reading. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:48, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Hi Moonriddengirl, I'm very sorry for not responding earlier. I've been away for a couple of weeks and was unable to get an internet connection. :-(( (Yes, there are still places in the world without a reliable connection!)
I'm glad you found someone to help you. If there's anything I can do, please drop me a line.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk

Lazio

I reverted your edit on Lazio because the change was not unsourced at all, the previous figure was in fact incorrect by a wide margin. I have no way of linking the page for Lazio directly so I took a little screenshot (here) that puts the number of foreign residents at 450,151 at the number of Romanians at 158,509, making them the largest minority in the region. Cheers, 93.45.110.140 (talk) 13:49, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
