Map of Canada edit

Thank you for the new map of Canada you have added to the provincial articles. I see you have also added a border between Canada and the United States. Can you put a line between Canada and Saint Pierre and Miquelon? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 23:00, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yes; I will add the original boundary line. I could add the full EEC defined in 1992, but I do not wish to do so unless it can be justified.
Please note: my Political map of Canada has the full set of international marine boundaries claimed by Canada in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans (understanding that some of the boundary lines are cropped because the map extents do not go far enough north to reach the north pole). I could easily apply the full set of marine boundaries to the location and locator maps, but I am hesitant to do so for two reasons:
  1. Some of the boundaries are disputed... especially the US/Canada border in the Arctic ocean.
  2. Most of the US and Greenland locator maps on Wikimedia maps don't attempt to show many marine boundaries in the oceans. I doubt it is a documented standard, but I am suspicious that it helps to avoid unwanted edit wars.MapGrid (talk) 03:57, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
You certainly know your maps! Adding Saint Pierre and Miquelon isn't crucial or urgent. Really was just curious if you could. Cheers and thanks for the updated map. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:46, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

List of TZ database zones edit

Hey MapGrid, I've been impressed at your recent edits to List_of_tz_database_time_zones. I want to ask: Are you using any software to automate constructing the wikitext table markup directly from the latest tz database? Or did you manually apply the update for the 2021c database? Basically, I need to be able to automatically generate a similar table for some free and open source time manipulation software, so if you're willing to share whatever tooling or script you use to generate the table, if you are using something, I would appreciate it. No pressure though, it's up to you. Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pcg01 (talkcontribs) 03:07, 14 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Pcg01:, I am using a perl script which I cobbled together. It works, but it needs to be treated as poorly documented work in progress. I consider the script to be moderately inefficient, but I really don't care because it executes in less than one second. Currently it only generates the content for the tables but not the table header rows, thus I have to do a nasty cut/copy/paste operation to merge the pieces together. For now, you can view the script at walton.xyz/tz/update_tz_sh.txt. You will need to manually copy and paste that URL (without the trailing period); add the https prefix if required. Wikimedia's spam blocking rules won't let me save this reply if I attempt to put an xyz domain inside square brackets. I pay good money for the domain so I am moderately annoyed. Wow, thanks for sharing! Cool to see you have in fact automated this, and that your script covers more quirks than I expected (e.g. loading in existing page to preserve notes and Europe/Simferopol's special case), it's beefier than I thought. Thanks. pcg (talk) 13:43, 17 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
