Avoiding copyright problems

Hello, and welcome. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

• You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
• Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
• Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
• In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.

Speedy deletion nomination of Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda

A tag has been placed on Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to introduce inappropriate pages to Wikipedia, as you did at Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda, you may be blocked from editing. If you need guidance on how to create appropriate pages, try using the Article Wizard. Once the article had been deleted, re-creating the same article without addressing the issues that led to deletion was unconstructive. Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda

Because Wikipedia is licenced under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, all of the content released under the same licence. As such, only the copyright holders to any text can licence it in this way. (It's a little complicated, but basically, anyone can re-use any content of Wikipedia, for anything they like, as long as they attribute the creator, and licence their creation the same way).

Presumably, the school you were copying text from owns the copyright to the text. If you write wholly new text, you can release it under the licence, and it could be included. If you want to work on a page without being disturbed by other editors, try writing at User:Manowiki123/Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda. Nobody should bother you there (unless you continue to use copyright material, which there's a strong no-tolerance for). Once you have an article that's written with a neutral point of view, and shows its notability through reliable sources, ask an administrator (such as me) to unlock the namespace and move the article over. Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. Cleanup at Bandaranayake_Central_College_-_Veyangoda

Greetings, thanks for your new article Bandaranayake_Central_College_-_Veyangoda! You got a lot of parts right, and a few things that needed some tweaking and improving. I've done a basic cleanup on it to bring it in line with Wikipedia standards.

I know it can be discouraging to have other editors change your work, but that's the entire nature of Wikipedia, to collaborate to improve. Though I don't know your school, I do know formatting, so I've done my best to bring your article into line. Explanation for major edits

Greetings, I came upon this article because it was improperly placed in the Category:Sri Lanka; only 3-4 large overview articles should be directly in a main-country category, with the rest properly sub-categorised.

The article is interesting, and overall a useful addition, but it needed a good copyedit. As it stood, it was not written as a proper encyclopedia article, but more as fansite or FaceBook page. Wikipedia is a great place to share the basic history and official facts of a school, but not to discuss the photography club, tennis matches, and lists of favourite teachers. Individual people should only be mentioned if they are significant enough to have their own article; if not, what good does it do to a reader in Iceland or Japan to read that Mr Smith is the biology teacher?

The article suffered from other "FaceBook-like" issues such as use of attention-grabbing fonts and banners, and massive numbers of photographs, none of which are pertinent to a Wikipedia article. I have "hidden" your photos and anthem in the article so you don't lose the code (though note you can use the "History" tab to copy whatever you need from earlier versions if there's anything lost).

To continue improving the article, and to understand why some things have been removed, I strongly recommend you read Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines. Broadly speaking, before adding anything, think not of how excited it makes you, or how good an impression it would make at a student at a school down the street, but instead of how useful/informative the article would be to a stranger on the other side of the planet. Wikipedia articles should be pertinent to everybody, not just those intimate with the subject.

Thanks again for your work so far; though it can be disappointing that not everything you added is applicable, the greater part certainly is, and now the school has a page that's approaching proper format and style.
