Smithy

Could you check the Ian Smith signature request on the Graphics Lab and see if it is correct and finished and, if so, add {{resolved}} to the head of the section? Thanx (Just trying to keep things backing up). 68.39.174.238 (talk) 21:53, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Gray_Hofmeyr.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Gray_Hofmeyr.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 16:35, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Zesa logo.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Zesa logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 19:42, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

wanted

Manheru, Mangwanani

  • Murewa (en.wiki): I've been too lazy, to write the description of the landscape also in English.
  • Bantu: Do you know newer facts and considerations about that very early (100 AD) Iron Age finding near Maputo?--Ulamm (talk) 21:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

South African English

Could you please write a stub about Kurów in South African English here – just a few sentences based on http://kurow-wiki.openhosting.pl/wiki/en-gb:Kurow ? Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already in 276 languages and dialects. If your village/town/city isn't yet on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests and this article have the biggest number of interwikis) Pietras1988 TALK 12:39, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Districts & Towns

Okay! One note though, sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the two: like Masvingo district vs. town. I was thinking that for the smaller towns, i would let the district as whole represent it...if further infor comes along, then i can go down one level to distinguish town from district. I know it does appear to make sense, but for the case of Insiza/Binga etc, these are just a few buildings that represent the town....hence my putting them under one blanket as 'Insiza District' instead of 'Insiza Town' This probably doesn't make sense. Speedy deletion of Image:Zimbabwe Presidential Flag 1987-1991.svg

A tag has been placed on Image:Zimbabwe Presidential Flag 1987-1991.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Zimbabwe Presidential Flag 1987-1991.svg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Rhodesian Bush War to Second Chimurenga name change?

There's currently some discussion going on the talk page Talk:Rhodesian Bush War. One user has proposed changing the name of the article Rhodesian Bush War to second Chimurenga. There appears to be some support and some opposition. Sf46 (talk) 11:33, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Same comment I made to *jb. Just a heads up. Indicating support is nearly meaningless on WP:RM for the incomplete and contested section. Everything there gets purged in 5 days regardless of the level of support or opposition. If you really support it you need to make a formal request and move it to the "Other" section. 199.125.109.104 (talk) 18:14, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
HUH? :S Mangwanani (talk) 18:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
What I am saying is that it is highly unlikely to have any effect. It just gets deleted in 5 days. 199.125.109.104 (talk) 18:43, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
At the beginning of the incomplete section it states in bold letters "With the exception of a brief description of the problem or objection to the move request, please do not discuss move requests here." It does not say "support", it says "objection". 199.125.109.104 (talk) 18:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Oh well I just made my views known to the nominator. If (s)he is serious about it then (s)he may take further action. Mangwanani (talk) 19:08, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

My personal recommendation would be to use their talk page for that. My point is that nominations in the Uncontroversial and Other sections have to be acted on. Nominations in Contested tend to be ignored and swept aside in 5 days. I look them over regularly and rescue them from time to time if I think that they shouldn't be there. But I don't base my decision on support/oppose comments. I only go by whether I think they should be rescued or moved. Sometimes for example someone drops a new request into Contested, which is clearly a misunderstanding of what the section is for. 199.125.109.104 (talk) 20:30, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Image:Twin Rivers Logo.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Twin Rivers Logo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [3], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Twin Rivers Logo.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. BJTalk 09:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Flags

Sabona, rra! I undid your additions of flag icons to the infoboxes on several Southern African politicians. Per WP:MOSFLAG we do not use flags in this way; there is a broad consensus that they add nothing and merely clutter up what is supposed to be a text field. Best wishes to you, --John (talk) 02:35, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:Help

Hello, I think all those pictures you asked me about are copyrighted, because they date from around 1980, and the applicable copyright, is {{PD-BritishGov}}, which expires 50 years after first publication, which would be in 2030. Most can be used as fair-use however as they depict dead people, for which no free alternative can be found, I think only Jack William Pithey is still alive, but it should be OK for fair-use anyway, because if someone were to take a free picture of him now, it would have to be in his old age, and not during his career. Jackaranga (talk) 18:21, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I got mixed up my history there, obviously PD-BritishGov doesn't apply as it was after independence. I think they will only be free 70 years after the death of the photographer, but can still be used under fair-use regardless. Jackaranga (talk) 18:26, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Coat of Arms of Tibet.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Coat of Arms of Tibet.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Polly (Parrot) 19:42, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Politician photos

Hi, I see that the photos of the various Rhodesian/Zimbabwean politicans which I loaded have been deleted due to copyright reasons. These are all official photos and sent from their offices when they held it and so I presume the photos must be in the public domain. I don't want to waste time loading them up all over again only for them to be deleted - please advise what to do as I see many other offical photos all over Wikipedia, plus some others taken by me and not acknowledged! Keep up the good work on the Rhodesian/Zimbabwean topics. Flagmanbruce (talk) 19:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:Help

I don't think that coat of arms you created is acceptable on the commons, because it is too similar to the copyrighted official version, you can upload it on wikipedia and license it as fair-use. The difference with many other coats of arms is that many are no longer subject to copyright, either because the country chooses not to copyright it's COA or because the author died more than 70 years ago. In this case it would seem the Coat of Arms is still copyrighted by Iceland which is why it was nominated for deletion. Here is an example of what you could do Image:Coat of arms of Canada.svg, the coat of arms of Canada is copyrighted by the Canadian government. Remember to upload to wikipedia though not the commons, you can use the same name as the file on the commons, to avoid having to edit each page the image was inserted in. Remember to add a fair-use rationale for each article, fair-use images can't be used on Portals or talk pages, nor in galleries. Ask me again once you have uploaded it to wikipedia if you need any help. Jackaranga (talk) 11:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

You can't use non free images in templates, only in articles. Jackaranga (talk) 16:09, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
