Listing other users edit

Whether Jaakobou is zionist is not important. Listing it on your userpage when he objects, however, is counterproductive and could be considered an attack when you use it to judge his Wikipedia edits. Please refrain from listing users by their political convictions. If people want to do that, they can do so on their own userpage. - Mgm|(talk) 09:56, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi MacGyverMagic, User Jaakobou proudly supports zionism and does not feel that being labled a zionist is a personal attack. I personally do not share his belief. But I do believe that one can learn much by examining his actions on Wikipedia. The link on my page was to his edit history (you removed the link along with a links to Israel's prime minister Ehud Olmert and former chief of staff Dan Halutz). He also objected to me linking to Israeli prezident Moshe Katzav on my user page, but you did not comment on this. If you examine his edit log along with my own you will find that I have been most civil and have not made any personal attacks against him. Unfortunately the same can not be said about his behaviour: e.g. this edit to my user page [1] which accused me of being ignorant about zionism. I suppose that I should be greatful that his attacks on me have been mild compared to his attacks on other editors (see for example edit summary [2]) where he lables edits which are not according to his POV as vandalism. Your decision to side with User:Jaakobou will encourage his rude and aggressive POV pushing on Wikipedia. Abu ali 11:03, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
excuse me, but i am not a "proud zionist" so don't judge my feelings to beind labeled as one. especially when the intention is to use the term zionism in a derogatory undertone. as for the Battle of Jenin, controversy, it is not my fault if you assume other users who are changing it to be me[3] - they are not me. I noticed you linked to WP:VAIN when replying to a question on Wikipedia:New contributors' help page. If you follow the link to WP:VAIN, it suggests that you use WP:COI instead. Just thought I'd let you know. —PurpleRAIN 15:36, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Questionable edits to names edit

Hello. Just wanted to bring a another IP to your attention related to the issue I brought up at Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2007_January_26#Questionable_edits_to_names. I came across a few similar edits from 85.210.251.210.--GregRM 17:55, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:Benio76 edit

I've just had an e-mail from Benio76 (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log), whom you blocked indefinitely as a sock-puppet. He's given me pretty conclusive evidence of his identity (linking the e-mail account from which he contacted me, his Web page, his University in Italy, etc.). He explains that he shares an ADSL line with his housemate, of whom he's accused of being a sock-puppet (Olivierd (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)).

I must say, looking at the evidence he provides, and at the evidence of editing, the sock-puppet charge looks open to debate, at the very least. Is there any chance of reassessing this?

I've left this at WP:AN/I, but I thought that I'd leave it here too, as you were the blocking admin. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 19:59, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply. Yes, he said that he's also tried to contact Essjay but has been ignored. He's provided a lot of data giving details of edits, tending to show that he and the vandal were indeed different people who did some of their editing in the same house. Looking at his contributions, I can't see any sign of vandalism or abuse either. I'll see if there's any response at WP:AN/I, then try to look up the Mediation Cabal case. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've had a few responses at WP:AN/I, all saying that they think that he could be unblocked, and blocked again if he misbehaves. I couldn't find a Mediation Cabal past case (but I'm not familiar with that place, so I might have missed it). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:37, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thanks. The mediation case simply petered out with no result. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:54, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Map/Name lookup templates coming edit

FYI: I have a new set of templates that looks up a nation's name or flag image (all are SVGs) from a top level domain code. To simplify things, each nation gets only one code even if they actually have several top level domains. For instance, the United Kingom has top level domains of ".gb" and ".uk". My templates only recognize "uk" (no period). Also, for the US, pass "USA". They are case sensitive.

They are intended to support my new Where I have been templates. However, I will also support user boxes if people are interested. Currently, I only can support nations. However, I expect to add more templates to do provinces/states of those nations. However, while one main template can look up information for any nation, all it will do is call templates for that nation. So GetProvinceName will call templates like GetProvinceNameUK. I expect to create the nation templates for Canada and the USA only. However, I will provide an override parameter allowing you to use versions from your own namespace or somewhere else. Joseph Thomas Ward edit

What Is Your Problem? edit

Why did you yet again delete my entry on my Grandfather: Joseph Thomas Ward?.
I knew that my Article stated: "The original version of this biography was published in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography Volume Three (1901-1920), 1996 © Crown Copyright 1996-2007, BUT if you had of read the original article off the N.Z.Biography site, you would have noticed that my article and the one on the N.Z.Biography site are two completely different article's - mine was from a grandaughters prospective.
Joseph Thomas Ward was a notable New Zealand Astronomer, who made vast contributions in the world of Astronomy - he deserves recognition, and to keep on deleteing his article is a huge insult to my family and the general New Zealand population!
It's obvious you dont bother to read ANY articles properly and will keep deleting at you own leisure.
So what is your excuse for this carry-on? appart from:Article states: "The original version of this biography was published in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography Volume Three (1901-1920), 1996 © Crown Copyright 1996-2007." because if thats all you can manage - thats truly pathetic

AARON SWEENEY edit

why did you delete the aaron sweeney wikipedia page? you called it an "attack page"? why? You obviously know very little about Ireland, so in future don't delete articles that aren't related to you you ass. Do I go and delete articles about Dutch musicians? No, so don't do it to Irish ones. Now go and put it back up —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.70.69.45 (talk) 16:34, 6 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

Image Deletion edit

Why did you delete the images from Victorian Women's Football League ?????

You said they were unfree, but perhaps in future, you'd care to check the copyright info on images before you just go deleting ones you think are not free. They are both public domain. See for yourself ... [[Image:Women's marking contest.jpg]] [[Image:Women's tackle.jpg]]

It is very frustrating for those who take the time to make a genuine effort to contribute media to wikipedia. I know, because I took those images myself and I uploaded them as GPL ! --Spewmaster 01:52, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

CSS Float question from Reference desk edit

First of all, thanks for your reply and taking the time to look at this. Ok, compare [4] and [5]. In the first, the content of the right column is shorter than the left column so the color in the left column goes all the way down to the footer. However, in the second link, the text in the right column is longer than that of the left, and the color stops after the padding on the text. I was wondering if there was a way to code it so the background color of the column goes all the way to the footer. If not, I'll just have to put an image in the parent container div (which may be a better option because I can use a gradient or a fancy border or really anything I want).-Andrew c 02:41, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

They use the same style sheet. The only difference is the content within the right column. Here is another example. [6] use the html and CSS code provided to make your own files on your computer. add "background-color:999;" to either #leftnav or #rightnav (or both) and you will see where the background color of the column stops. I'm thinking there isn't a way to extend the background-color down the the footer using CSS alone, but if I didn't have doubt, I wouldn't be asking you. Thanks for taking the time to look at this.-Andrew c 18:25, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

In your own personal opinion do you want that article deleted or not? And why did you list it on AfD if you did not want it deleted? Mathmo Talk 13:37, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see now. So I gather that you are then expressing no opinion about the keeping or not of the article? If so it probably would be a good idea to state that in the nomination. Thanks anyway for clearing it up a little with me. Mathmo Talk 13:56, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Samuel Barlay Oops edit

My bad on this one. This is the second or third mistake of this type I've made on football/soccer players in the last couple of months. I obviously have no judgment when it comes to notability in this sport and should just keep my ill-informed opinions to myself in such cases. (comment intended to be humourously self-deprecating, not sarcastic.) Thanks for your heads-up on this matter. --PigmanTalk to me 18:03, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have a question regarding the deletion of the Doctor Steel page, it was listed in the articles of deletion review by myself, however the final decision was not stated, and it was deleted from the review. I wish to know who did not follow protocol and why. (major fair use violation, see afd debate) is what the original reason it was deleted. That is I assume because of the images that were posted, however phineas waldorf steel was deleted as well, it did not contain the pictures that were said to be a fair use violation. I am requesting some help in this matter before I speak with other admins, as well as release this story to / . djandarial@gmail.com

DYK is backlogged edit

Hi MacGyverMagic, can you give DYK a nudge? It's been 13 hours according to the clock at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Did_you_know . Thanks! Kla'quot 09:30, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I tried one other. Most of the people on the DYK backlog hit list went to bed already, it seems. Anyway, someone will find it sooner or later. Kla'quot 09:41, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - I was just about to get to it (I set up the next update well in advance last night, but it was ignored until now).
Did you have any problems in following the instructions? It should be relatively easy to copy over from the next update page, and popups makes pasting the notification templates on to talk pages easy enough. Anyway, thanks again. -- ALoan (Talk) 09:59, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you had problems, please would you consider looking at the DYK instructions and clarifying the bits that you found difficult to follow?
There is no need to set up the Next Update - at least, not if you don't want to. The updating tasks have been separated, so people with the time and inclination can set up/copyedit the next update, and then an interested admin can just copy it across to the live template and protect the image. (If you are pressed for time, you can always skip the notifications, and leave a message asking someone else to do it for you.)
But thanks again for helping out. It is always good to have an extra admin who knows how the process works - we are doing about 3 updates per day during the week, and perhaps 2 per day at the weekend, but there seems to be a gap between about 12 midnight and 9am (UCT). -- ALoan (Talk) 10:18, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

My recent Afds edit

Thank you for your comments about my recent Afd's - I know I appear to be nominating a lot of artices, but in reference to the discussion I had with Jeendan and Qxz} that my current project is assessing all of the unassessed articles in the WPBiography project (130,000+ unassessed articles at the moment - I got a lot of work ahead of me).

Most articles I upgrade to the stub status, but I peruse over their main article. When I come across articles lacking in notability, information, etc., such as I have nominated for AfD, it is not that I want them deleted, rather, I will let the rest of the community, like yourself, make the judgement. As much as I would love to sit down and upgrade every questionably notable article I come across, it would impede me from my current task which is assessing all of the unlooked at articles tagged with the {{WPBiography}} box.

Apologies if I am coming across as a lunatic, and I take absolutely no offense if you disagree with my nomination! Hopefully nominating these articles will bring them to light to at least get some TLC and fleshed out. Thanks again! --Ozgod 13:43, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • do apologize, I take the article at face value. I check to see the History log to see how long since updates, etc. I regularly tag articles with the {{cleanup}}{{unreferenced}}and{{expert-subject-|PROJECT}} tags. In cases where I feel (I hate being subjective as well) the article does not establish the notability of the subject, I nominate for AfD. If the article is unreferenced and has questionable notability (which again, subjective opinon on my part), I send it to AfD and let the community have the final say on whether it is notable or not. Once again, my apologies if this has created a headache for you. --Ozgod 13:55, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You did notice that none of the editors who gave an opinion had read the article as it actually stood when you closed the discussion early and redirected, didn't you? User:BOV1993 edit

BOV1993 (talk · contribs) appears to be requesting a block reduction on his talkpage and making a thinly veiled threat to block evade with a sockpuppet. It appears he's been indef'd already under at least 2 other accounts. IMO, he is pretty close to a vandal only account... but I'll leave it up to you as the blocking admin.--Isotope23 20:35, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Did it sound like I was asking for a reduction? That wasn't at all what I was saying... Personally I would have probably indef'd him from the get go, you are more forgiving than I  :). I was just informing you of the request after I noticed it & it wasn't a formal unblock request. He's burned through 2 accounts and been indef'd already for similar behavior. I think he's edging right up on a 3rd strike WP:BAN discussion. In any event I most certainly think your block should stand and any socking that is noticed would prompt me to initiate a community discussion on the individual.--Isotope23 21:06, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Don't sweat it... I don't think I was overly clear. Per WP:ANI#Extreme racial comments and a death threat! it is being alleged that this is the same individual as JBAK (talk · contribs) & Williamdevino (talk · contribs). Nobody has asked for a checkuser, but WP:DUCK, I'm inclined to agree with the assessment per the individual's edit history as well as their usage of language; I'm not exactly a linguist, but there are some things that would seem to suggest they are the same person.--Isotope23 21:53, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
He has admitted on User talk:BOV1993 to making many nasty edits in the past; however, this is not a vandal-only account, as he has made many normal edits too. I've been in touch with him for a while now, and there is no doubt that all these users are the same person. He is age 13 (according to his user page), and he has promised on his talk page to put the nasty edits behind him. Since User:JBAK was blocked, he has not made any racist remarks or similar - the current block on User:BOV1993 was for an earlier anonymous edit. I've warned him that sockpuppets will be spotted very quickly, and I think it's unlikely he will try anything like that now. I'll leave it up to you and RevJohn to decide whether to extend or reduce his block. RevJohn originally asked for an indefinite block. Thanks, Zaian 07:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
The stuff he's saying right now doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me that he's actually learned anything. I don't know how you feel about the MGM, but he as basically admitted to being Williamdevino (talk · contribs) and I personally consider this account to be an indef block evader. If he had just shown up here and quietly edited I don't think it would be a problem, but that doesn't appear to be the case. In any event there is no way the block should be reduced and if he is allowed to edit again then he should be strictly held to that promise; any more BS should result in an indef, autoblock, and close watching for socks.--Isotope23 16:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Here's a template to use in an AfD, when it has been listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Visual arts (please do list appropriate AfDs there). Please pass on to others.

List of premature obituaries edit

Hi MGM - thanks for your comments on this featured list candidate (FLC page). I've now made all the suggested changes that have come in, including yours re the statistics on causes of premature obituaries (which have been cut), clearer description of the criteria for counting as a source of an obituary, and moving entries that lack a reference to the talk page. If you're happy with it now, I'd be grateful if you could provide a 'support' vote. Thanks! Ben Finn 13:42, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ben Woldring edit

I edited the parts of the article that I felt were not written in proper English. Most of the edits regarded commas. More clarification is still needed in the article. For example, "[Ben Woldring] first rose to fame in the fall of 1998 when he made a website where consumers could compare prices for mobile phone services for a school assignment." I find it implausible that a website dedicated to helping schoolchildren with their assignments about mobile phone services made Ben Woldring a millionaire. --Strangerer 20:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for clarifying. I added in the missing commas in your sentence. --Strangerer 22:53, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
