Dee edit

Hi, my article did not get published because there wasn't enough inline citations. I was hoping to find an editor who can help me rewrite the article to standard. Am still finding my footing here so am new to the wiki does and don't.

I Would love to ping you but I don't no how to do that either. Please I need help.Dee 06:42, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

@Duthperod: No worries. Let me review your email and get back to you in a bit. In the meantime, may I suggest playing The Wikipedia Adventure? It is a fun game that teaches you all about how to edit Wikipedia. Also, to ping someone, read Help:NotificationsMJLTalk 15:50, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot, will be awaiting your feedback. Dee 10:50, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@Duthperod: you seemed to have gotten lost in trying to reply to me lol. –MJLTalk 14:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: lol, I really don't no how I got here. Thanks for helping out on the article, should I resubmit the article?Dee 19:55, 5 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Duthperod: Nah, I'd hold off for a bit. Trim the article down to only stuff that is directly supported by an inline citation to a reliable source per WP:V (Help:Citing sources)). Then resubmit when the article only has the content that is absolutely necessary. –MJLTalk 20:43, 5 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Also, your signature doesn't link to your user page. You might want to get that fixed. Try pasting this code in your preferences: [[User Talk:Duthperod‬|Dee]] To get the following result: Dee
And then be sure to check the box that says Treat the above as wiki markup.
Cheers! –MJLTalk 20:49, 5 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: I have trimmed down the article and added references. Please do help me go through the article again to see if I still have to work on it before submitting it. Dee 15:51, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Dee Before I start, I noticed that a lot of the article has minor problems that are somewhat easy to notice. If you go to your preferences by clicking here, then check the box next to Display links to disambiguation pages in orange you'll see that a lot of your links are actually to disambiguRation pages.
While I just made a few minor corrections, I'm afraid there are some issues that still need to resolve that I am less able to commit to being able to help you with. Glen Allen Grubbs seems to have played a role in Saudi Arabia–United States relations similar to Erik Prince. If you want to check out really good articles to get a sense for how Wikipedia really structures its content, I spent some time searching for a good article to use as a model or guide, and the best I came up with was Vannevar Bush or Wesley Clark.
The important thing is to ensure the article meets Wikipedia:Verifiability and No original research. If you want help finding sources, I can certainly help with that. However, right now it isn't clear to me exactly where you are getting most of the information from. On Wikipedia, even opinions should be cited or qualified to meet WP:NPOV and WP:OPINION. Sorry I can't be more of a help.  MJLTalk 17:08, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Thanks a lot for your feedback. I certainly will like it if you help with the sources.Dee 08:53, 19 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Hello, I have worked on the disambiguation page you talked about and added a few source. Please help me check if it will get published. Dee 10:46, 28 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Dee: Hi there! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner (things have been hectic a bit). I'm reviewing this now for you!  MJLTalk 00:55, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Duthperod: Where are you getting most of this information may I ask? There is more details in it than I would normally expect for this individual subject. –MJLTalk 01:10, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: thanks for getting back. First I thought I submitted the article to draft place for reviewing and not straight to article space? If that was not the case, how do I stop it from going to article space if I decide to resubmit it for reviewing?Dee 05:06, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Dee: That is correct; the article once reviewed goes directly from draftspace to article space. Basically, you shouldn't feel the need to submit it until it's ready; there is no deadline. However, If you do submit it accidentally, then you can simply undo the edit or ask for help at the Articles for creation help desk.  MJLTalk 05:18, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Concerning the information, He provided them before his death and others from the links, books and pdf. It's now impossible to ask about them now.
@MJL: Hello again, please help me review the article again and give me your feedback.Dee 11:55, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Wow, Hope you win the election, a big success to you. Dee 14:35, 23 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Southwest PGA edit

@MJL::Thanks so much for looking at the edit of Southwest PGA. I did take the first reviewer's comments and edited the copy so it didn't read "a bit like an advertisement" and changed it pretty well. I also provided examples of other golf organizations (USGA and the PGA of America. Very similar especially other PGA Sections like Illinois PGA). That doesn't even have any ref's, which I went back and added. Regarding the reliable sources, they are straight from the PGA of America, which I think everyone would site as reliable. I can look for other articles but I think the PGA would know how many Sections thay have and it's pretty well documented. Regarding the Chapters of the Southwest PGA, well the same. Can you let me know your suggestions for what you saw or were you basing it off the first reviewers comments becasse there weren't any ref's in there when they saw it. I did edit it and added. I just wanted to get this one up becasue I spent a significant amount of time on the Arizona Open page and it came out really well and that Southwest PGA adminsiters it. Really appreciate your assistance MJL! Bmadrid19 (talk) 06:07, 13 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Bmadrid19: You have caught me on a great day!! Basically, there are several other problems with that draft article (even assuming I looked past the reference issues). The entire lead section was copied from their press release (which is woefully not okay).[1] Further, several claims were unsoured altogether (now tagged). I added a source for you, but there are still numerous problems that exist for the article. Please address the copyright concerns first. After that, I'm willing to let the primary source concern issue slide assuming you have enough WP:Reliable sources to meet WP:GNG, I'll pass the article.  MJLTalk🍰 15:50, 13 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@MJL:THANKS MJL. I'm so happy you're having a great day and thank you so much for the suggestions and assistance. It really does help. @MJL:Ok, MJL now give it a twirl. I edited the copy so no more copyright issues. Added ref's as you suggested. I think I covered everything you suggested to me, which I really appreciate it. Can you give it a look and see if it's good to go and if so, approve. Thanks again for all your assistance. Bmadrid19 (talk) 20:56, 13 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Flat River Band Help edit

I got your message and see areas where you want citations. I'm not sure what you mean on some of the lines. For example the opening sentences: The Flat River Band Flat River Band, brothers Chad Sitze, Dennijo Sitze, and Andy Sitze; are an Americana Country Music Band that was formed in 2006. They have released 7 projects since moving to Nashville,TN in 2004.[citation needed] What exactly do you want me to cite here? Nashville or their website or what? I'm a little bit confused and would love some further clarification.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pcolgin (talkcontribs) 22:07, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pcolgin: Hi there! Thank you for reaching out. Basically, all Wikipedia articles need reliable sources to accomplish one of two things: (1) verify its content is accurate and (2) establish the subject's notability. When dealing with articles which contain information about living persons, we also have to follow the biographies of living persons policy.
To give you an answer to the specific example, to make this statement:
  • The Flat River Band, brothers Chad Sitze, Dennijo Sitze, and Andy Sitze; are an Americana Country Music Band that was formed in 2006. They have released 7 projects since moving to Nashville,TN in 2004.
We will need a reliable sources that say:
  1. The band's members include brothers Chad, Dennijo, and Andy.[1][2][3]
  2. The band was formed in 2006;[citation needed]
  3. They have released seven projects;[citation needed]
  4. They moved to Nashville in 2004.[4]

This band seems to qualify for notability under WP:BAND#C1, but the article needs to be properly sourced first. I hope that helps! :D –MJLTalk 22:51, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Petra Unkel edit

Hello, my friend, (yes , it me, the faithful one , you christened Vagabond ) i know you are not back until November 5th, i had trouble contacting the person you put me in correspondence with.i am SO LOOKING FORWARD to you coming back soon, at th emoment am having trouble with a member List of surviving Silent film actors, and in particular the entry relating to Petra Unkel, the member is stating there is no evidenc eof her living after 1958?, i keep telling them it is th eother way around, and they need to provide a reliable source to the contrary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.110.199 (talk) 12:49, 14 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Vagabond: kindly sign your posts. It's easy, just add four tildes: ~~~~. You don't even have to type them yourself, there's a button to add the tildes right under the editing window. Although it's true that the "SineBot" usually takes care of it automatically, sometimes the bot doesn't work, and it's a pain to go in and add a signature to someone else's post manually. WanderingWanda (talk) 23:51, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your message, WanderingWanda, hope you are going okay, regarding the posts, as i unfortunately don't have a registered account, i do not have a username to sign entries, this is why it displays log-in number. Regarding the articles, yes it is rather deceptive informations as for example it states in infobox, the years that the performer was active, yet as everything films and television are usually filmed in advance, which i snot the necessary date when the film was released to cinema's, where-is of course with stage it is a live production. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.110.199 (talk) 16:51, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
And thank you for your message. 1. You can (and should) sign your posts even though you don't have an account. 2. Regarding List of surviving silent film actors, I made a comment on the talk page, but I don't want to become involved any more than that. I will say that it would've been better if you tried to talk things out with Jkaharper on the talk page rather than reverting them over and over again. On 30 October 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article House church (Russia), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi (pictured), which houses the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir, is both a house church and a museum? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, House church (Russia)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

About my claims edit

In your Guide you wrote:

I'll take this time to correct the record for him, though. There is no evidence he came up with the No Original Research policy as that was already a thing. I found numerous instances of Larry Sanger discussing it as a policy as far back as 2001 (before Llywrch got here), and the most comprehensive comment was this one. I'm not sure about Wikipedians-in-residence, though.

I proposed the "No Original Research" policy here on the WikiEN mailing list. Jimmy Wales enthusiastically embraced it here, which left a deep impression on me because I had thought I had persuaded the God King himself how to set policy. But due to your research, I see now why he agreed with me. (When I joined Wikipedia in October 2002, Larry Sanger was a fading force I had heard about but never really exchanged emails with; I notice he dropped from the Wikipedia mailing list that December.) My mention of "someone else" was an allusion to Slim Virgin, whom I see also claims to have invented that policy.

As for Wikipedian-in-Residence, I proposed that on my moribund blog 13 December 2006. Wittylama, with no knowledge of that post, held the first WiR at the British Museum in June 2010. Some people think I should get credit. (Okay, Blue Raspberry thinks I should get credit for it; I don't know if anyone else does.) Since WL did all the work to hold the first WiR, I admit it would be boorish to insist I should exclusive credit for it. And I don't know just how forcefully I would protest were he to get exclusive credit for this achievement.

But my point in mentioning these two things was not to boast, but to show I have contributed to defining Wikipedia policy in ways many people may not know. I've just been content in recent years to remain in the background, quietly working on articles, occasionally interceding as an admin here or there, & not always aggressively promoting myself as I've seen others do. Perhaps the two examples I picked weren't the best to display my thinking, & I should have linked to this email from WikiEN I had half-forgotten, or to this essay which I feel deserves more attention than it gets. In any case, I hope this shows that my memory is solid about these two points in my candidate statement. -- llywrch (talk) 08:41, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Llywrch: My apologies for the confusion. I took that stuff as somewhat boasting because it was in your candidate statement. I come from a highly political background, so it just seemed like natural campaign fluff to me. It also never occurred to me to check the mailing lists or off-wiki blogs (going to have to keep that in mind for the future!). To be honest, I was rather impressed you were willing to go off your own memory rather than linking to things because I can barely remember what happened two days ago unless I have a record of it.
I'm removing that paragraph from the guide. I really appreciate the feedback and response! :D –MJLTalk 08:55, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Just wanted to clear up any misunderstandings. (I try not to be too fluffy in what I write, & sometimes I do achieve this.) Thanks for the comments. -- llywrch (talk) 17:04, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Your voter guide comment edit

Hi. I had a quick comment on your discussion of me in your voter guide. I can't quarrel with the view that the same person, in this case me, shouldn't be returned to the ArbCom for a fifth term. I very sincerely was not planning to run again until this past weekend, when some very respected editors who had in the past opined that I'd served long enough, suggested that there would be merit to my running after all in the circumstances of this particular year. (If you're interested, you can find the discussion on User talk:Iridescent). If I'd known how many other experienced candidates were also going to sign up on the last day of nominations, I might have stayed out of it after all. And in light of that I have indeed considered withdrawing, but it could feel churlish for me to drop out right after so many other people thanked me so enthusiastically, even overenthusiastically, for running. So we'll leave it up to the voters (in this one context we needn't write "!voters") to decide.

The one thing you wrote that I do have to disagree with is your suggestion that if I'm on the Committee, I will drown out the voices of any new members. I don't think that is what happened during my prior terms and I don't think that if I'm elected it would happen this time either. Checking the listing at WP:RFAR/C, during my most recent term as an arbitrator in 2017-2018, the Committee decided 10 full-fledged cases, and I was a co-drafter of the decision in just two of them. Although the record-keeping for other aspects of the Committee's work isn't as formal, I don't think I played a disproportionate role in any other aspects either. And I'm pretty sure that I cast more sole "oppose" votes on various items over the years than anyone else, so it's not as if the other arbitrators automatically went along with anything I said—not ever, not by a long shot—and looking over the lists of the incumbents who will remain on the Committee and the other candidates in this election, I can't imagine it happening in 2019-2020 either, if I'm returned. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 15:46, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Newyorkbrad: I may have phrased it the wrong way, but what I am referring to is not you personally doing anything that will silence other folks on the committee. My major concern is that your presence will lead to people flocking to your voice in almost all committee matters and creating the perception that there are two levels of committee members. We're going to have a much larger committee than in 2017/2018, so the idea that there will be backbenchers should not sound implausible, but my fear is that it will become more severe the greater the disparity of experience levels.
To give an example of what exactly I am afraid of, let's say we have you and a newbie who have commented on a controversial case. You accept it while the newbie declines it due to both of you having opposing viewpoints about the amount of dispute resolution that should occur before the committee accepts the case. While under normal circumstances, this would be treated as what it was (a difference of opinion), the fact that you both have differing levels of experience will lead most people in the community to conclude that the newbie made a mistake somehow by not agreeing with you.
You have incredibly high levels of respect among people in the community, and my concern is people will use that respect to dismiss others on the committee. You'll be viewed as a leader when it is a committee of equals, and your word will likely carry more weight than that of a committee member who is much newer.
I hope that makes a bit more sense! :) –MJLTalk 16:03, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
The flocking happens only because NYB commands force of reason. His logic is strong; he is wise; people agree with him. Jehochman Talk 16:17, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jehochman: This is precisely my point. That isn't sustainable in the long term. I'm looking for the committee be stocked with people with the potential to live up to that ideal so the community has a new generation of leadership. If we keep using NYB as a crutch, we'll never outgrow him. See also: this. –MJLTalk 16:28, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
It would be nice for others to appear who have equal skill and willingness to serve, but at the moment there is great need and ArbCom has been bouncing from one crisis to another. For the moment I prioritize having a stabilizing influence. I prefer to have new faces, but there aren't enough qualified ones. We need a blend of new plus some who have served before to provide memory of past errors and successes. Jehochman Talk 04:57, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jehochman: I have given up on there ever being some moderate sense of stability on this project. People do wacky stuff that no one can really explain all the time. It really is less a question of who can be proactive in fixing enwiki's problems and more-so who has enough energy to sustain a never-ending trial by fire. That's why having more fresh blood on the committee is a bit more of my own priority; though I do think we need a healthy number of folks with institutional knowledge on there as well. –MJLTalk 05:21, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

WV on tour edit

Hello again, my friend, writing in regards to an article for creation, i believe someone wrote a draft page for a Charles P. Roland, which was rejected with the claim "not enough information", actually, however i believe he has credibility for an article.Draft:Charles P. Roland — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.42.220.187 (talk) 00:20, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I would say the reviewer was right to post that. There is an older version of the page that actually had a lot more sources. Let me see if I can get a copy of it to clean up for you. –MJLTalk 00:29, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, i also do certainly believe my friend the reviewer has the right to post that, i don't doubt at all that the page does not have enough information or citations for publication, but what i was stating is i believe it and the subject has credibility. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.42.220.187 (talk) 01:01, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

True, but whether the subject has credibility is different from whether they are notable. I think they may very well be notable, but the article still needs to reflect that (which was what the reviewer was trying to say). When I review stub articles, I generally like to see at least three high quality sources before I give it the green light. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯MJLTalk 01:11, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Okay, much appreciated notable and WP:reliable sources and thank-you for the articles, i much understand what you are saying, all in all we clearly just need more references, to back up the publication, thank you for sticking with me, as of course i am still learning, and you learn of course as you go along. I see in the article the three reasons of his notability (a)Historian and Professor at University of Kentucky (b) as became or attained centenarian status (c) attained the rank of captain in serving his country . Like you said we need more information to assert the notability. i trust you to see what you can do my friend, before the article can be submitted. Also i have a few articles also for you look over, much and kindly appreciated, but we should just stick with one at a time, things become a bit overwhelming. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.42.220.187 (talk) 01:45, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I just resubmitted the article after expanding it a bit. If it doesn't get reviewed in the next few days, I'll reach out to someone to get it bumped up the list.  MJLTalk 03:40, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thank you for that, you certainly work well and put in a great research. now, i am writing in regards to 2 articles, where there seems to be some discrepancies on these Margie Hines and Gladys Egan, over there birth and date of death, for Hines the most common facts are given as passed away in 1992, and Egan born in 1900 and either passed away either 1984 or 1997, could you please see what you can establish — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 11:24, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Also the page relating to Gladye Egan needs expanding as the filmography is not complete — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 11:35, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cont. edit

Hello, how did you go, could you please add in-line citations, otherwise people complain the info is false, i love her characters when i was a kid, still do, lol — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 09:58, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thsnk-you for the info regarding Gladys Egan, the filmography, we have about 30 of the 110 films, although she only appeared in film short . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 10:52, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I tried to do what I could, but it's such an extensive filmography! –MJLTalk 16:17, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

That is fine i can fix that later, as i am the filmography editor, and then you can just restore the reference'ss and categories section, lol, did you find any more information on Margie Hines — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 16:22, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I found out that her birthdate was probably off by a few years and had a WP:RS to back it up, but I couldn't verify when she died. I posted on the talk page to maybe get help from some other editors in that regard. Where did you hear of the 1992 death date? –MJLTalk 17:45, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Actually for Margie Hines, sorry it was not 1992, the most common date of when she passed is February 2, 2011 and as her date of birth was originally given as 1909?, it is probably wrong also — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 18:03, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, sadly Hines is a figure wrapped in a lot of mystery.  MJLTalk 18:16, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

yes, her date of passing seems obscure, but i rthink we might have a date or at least arough year of birth , you stated 1914/1915, if you go to th etalk page on MargieHines you will see aheading title "A Breakthough", which contains a newspaper link, stating sh ew as 21 in 1939 , when she married 24 year old Jack Mercer, hence we can now assume 1917 or 1918, boop-boop-a-doop — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 18:49, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

ToThAc, I think you did a yeoman's job of an unpleasant task that no one wants to do but nearly everyone agrees needed to be done. Thanks for your efforts today. Levivich 23:18, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
You're very welcome. In the end, I think we all generally agree that it had to happen eventually. ToThAc (talk) 23:22, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@ToThAc: Thank you for filing this request. I'm really not in the best position to get involved here, so I removed myself from this case request. My previous extent of involvement was just participating in some MFDs as well as closing a few others. I haven't participated practically at all in any of the previous discussions you linked to in the request, and I don't think the committee needs to hear from me. Best of luck making it through the next month or so, though! :D –MJLTalk 04:39, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Comments on a closed discussion... edit

Don't know if you noticed, but here you made additional comments on a discussion whose result was already decided. --Jayron32 21:45, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jayron32: I did notice, but since I kinda had to shrug it off. I started typing that before Bish had closed it, and I'm surprised I didn't get an edit conflict like normal. As I had pinged two users, I figured it was safer just to leave it up rather than giving them a phantom ping. –MJLTalk 21:50, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Real WV 😎 edit

Hello, i see we have some problems, with the Professor Charles P. Roland entry, i see there is plenty of reference's, but i think it just needs more information submitted into the body of the article. Items that cover a paragraph or less might not be acceptable for publishing. I need to add some links within the Terry Norris article because the filmography is incomplete— Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.43.229.8 (talk) 09:21, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks! edit

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
