Summary:
In this article the author describes Núria López-Bigas, a biologist from Spain. The article introduces Nuria as a research scientist and professor with a specialization in medical genetics, computational biology and bioinformatics. She then provides a description of the research institutions Nuria has worked on. Next, she provides a table of contents for the article that will follow along with an image and brief description of Luria. The first section of the article provides details on Luria's education and early research career. The author describes the progression of the researcher from her PhD years until recently, focusing on the research context and the research interest of Luria at those time points. The follow up section focuses on the major scientific contributions of Luria on the field of genomics and computational biology. Her computational methods of finding signals in somatic mutation of tumor cells is describes along with databases developed to assist cancer genomic research. In the final section of the article Luria's affiliations and awards are presented by the author. The Banco Foundation award and the Proffered Paper award were are awarded to her by Spanish and European authorities, respectively.
Major Points:
This article is from the beginning an important contribution to the database of wikipedia, since women in science are underrepresented in wikipedia. Taking that into account this article was compared to the wikipedia page of George Church, who is a well described scientist in a similar field as Luria. One major point is that the article is centered only around Luria the scientist and not Luria the individual. Among several other articles the life and spirit of scientist is described. As an example in the article dedicated for George Churh there ample of information on his early life, including were he grew up and how he early year might have shaped him into the scientist he is right now. It is assumed that a limited amount of information might be present for Luria, but if you are able to incorporate this information it would make a more complete article. Another note is the fact that the research section dedicated to Luria is not very descriptive and it only touches on the idea that she developed methods, as an example. On the George Church article their is a large section named "research" and a number of subsections within describe in detail the reason, the process, and the importance of each project performed by him. One example includes Genome Sequencing, where the article states that it was initiated at 1984, it had impacts on several other fields at 2005, and it ends with the development of the Personal Genome Project for the advancement of genomic science. Two other sections include the personal life of the scientist and also his appearance in the public.It would be nice to include those sections to allow for more information on Luria as a person. Apart from these observations the article seems well structure, with agreement with the guidelines of wikipedia, and with a number of citations to support the claims.
Minor Points:
A minor point I noticed on the author's talk page is that the image used to portray Luria doesn't have the appropriate copyright to be used in wikipedia and might create problems during submission. Another minor point in the awards section is that the reason behind the provision of the awards is not provided by the author. Another minor point is that the number of publications of Luria is not something that holds any information towards the public. I think its great that you contributed to the women in science project. Providing an encyclopedic platform for work done by these amazing scientists is essential and kudos to you for doing that! Overall, I think the formatting of the sections is fine. I know it might be difficult to obtain a lot of information on her personal life, but it would be nice to know more about her beyond the scope of science. You could also make a few minor changes that could help the article. For instance, in the Education and Early Research section, there’s a small grammatical error – “appointed as an ICREA research professor.” In the Professional Affiliation and Awards section, the third sentence sounds a bit odd because it starts off with a number. Maybe rephrase? Lastly, you could hyperlink several terms such as – tumor, Barcelona, cancer, driver genes, somatic mutations, etc. TurquoiseOmega (talk) 19:38, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
