RFA

Have you been following all the flaming I have been under during the CUP? There is practically talk that I am going to be the downfall of Wikipedia?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:05, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Write the nom if you wish. Note that there were also a slew of unflattering opinions at GAN.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 05:29, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Hi Fridae's - have both yours and Tony's talk pages watchlisted. I appreciate Tony has admitted his errors but I would strongly suggest that nominating him for RFA in light of this fairly recent outburst - which included accusations he made of racism against him by another editor - would probably not be in anyone's best interests at this time. Just my opinion. StrPby (talk) 08:16, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

IRC Questions

Hi F’sD! I have two IRC questions for you:

  1. When I connect, I use the link provided to me by Stwalkerster: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikipedia-en-accounts How does one connect so that it doesn’t indicate one’s IP? I read the stuff at WP:IRC and WP:IRC/T and could not figure it out.
  2. When I have been on IRC for ACC, I have been brought into a separate chat, such as you and I did the other day regarding that one particular account. How does one initiate a separate chat? I cannot find it at WP:IRC/T.

Thanks for any help you can give me on this! (Btw, how many hours ahead of UTC is your time zone in Australia? We’re UTC—5 here in Toronto.)SpikeToronto 20:56, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

ASIDE: Your user page answered my struck out question above: you are 15 hours ahead of us and 10 hours ahead of UTC. I should add a clock to my page too … — SpikeToronto 20:59, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

To initiate a separate talk simply double click that person's name or right click then left click start private chat, what you're looking for is an IRC cloak, see m:IRC cloaks, said cloaks hide your IP and m:IRC for more help about IRC. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 10:00am • 23:00, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. I should have acknowledged it earlier, but it left me a little confused. I have been connecting to the IRC through my browser using this link. As I (barely) understand it, to do as you have suggested, I need to use an IRC client application instead. If so, is there one you recommend one? Thanks! — SpikeToronto 17:26, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
ChatZilla for Firefox is the one I use, I've had no problems with it as of yet, I also use mIRC among others which is also another good client. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 11:35am • 00:35, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
SpikeToronto: you really don't need a separate client. Just say something along the format of " /msg <name> hi ". sonia 00:38, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Sonia, I'm not the best person to ask Spike, since I've only just started using IRC again having not used it for 3 years. A client is not required but has more features, though not required for conversation. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 11:43am • 00:43, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
From the way I read m:IRC cloaks, I cannot get a cloak without using a client. Is that correct? I really do not like how my IP appears everytime I log in using the Internet Explorer browser. In the meantime, I’ll take a look at mIRC. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 05:05, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's only if you're using an unaffiliated cloak on webchat, file a request for a cloak, confirm it on your talk page and then wait until the next batch of IRC Cloak requests are viewed and fulfilled. You'll need to identify your nickname when you log into IRC though otherwise the cloak won't work. —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 4:11pm • 05:11, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Here it says that to activate your cloak, “Type /msg nickserv identify <your password> or just put your NickServ password as your server password in your IRC client.” Well, when you go on IRC using just a browser, one does not provide a password, just a nickname. Plus, it specifically says IRC client. I like your suggestion regarding mIRC. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 05:24, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I didn't read the page thoroughly, sorry about the confusion. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 4:31pm • 05:31, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
No, no. This discussion has been very useful. It made me read the documentation more carefully. I think I’ll try ChatZilla, by the way. Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 08:04, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for participating in the October 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive! We made significant progress, wikifying hundreds of articles. However, the backlog still needs a large amount of effort--discussions about the next drive (in December) are underway. Until then, happy editing!

Adoptee

Aacarrie did respond to your post about adoptions, just in an untraditional way. Wanted to make sure you saw that, as they're all new and wouldn't know to add a talk back. I am the teacher assistant for a course using Wikipedia to create articles on public art this semester. While I'm comfortable and confident in "teaching" Wikipedia in a variety of ways, the Adopt-a-user program was kind of an experiment (in including it in the "getting started" steps). I see now I should have probably checked in with you or someone else involved as adopters before I included that step in their homework assignments. We didn't mean to throw an extra 20 adoptees at you at once. We'll be discussing this in class and ironing things out this week. Appreciate your help! HstryQT (talk) 14:49, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Right, Adoption is for teaching potential long-term members of the community. We don't want to turn people away so at the moment we're still currently discussing what the project is for and the goals of adoption. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 9:30pm • 10:30, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Coaching

While I miss coaching, I don't really have the time or the energy to devote myself to it. Sorry to say. However, if being an admin is in your sights in the near future, my recommendation is really to do the things you love and actively look for things to do.

In your case, I would say that it would be article writing. No, it's not because I believe that article writers are inherently better or even better suited for adminship (one of the great fallacies that too many people perpetrate around here), but simply because writing is at the core of the Wikipedian experience. The moment you get that GA or that FA out, it's a pretty good feeling after all the hard work you put into it.

If you have any questions though, feel free to ask me. Cheers, bibliomaniac15 19:04, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Consider adopting?

Greetings, Ancient Apparition. I'm a new editor, who wishes to improve the article The Conflict Continuum. It's based on my work, so would hope to have enough references on file to bring it up to standard.

I would like to get adopted so I can do this right. You seem exceptionally sane. Would you consider adopting me? The Wikipedian galaxy takes some getting used to, and I'd rather not make a mess of things. Thank you Amedea (talk) 17:54, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Userpage

Two things:

  • You never edited James C. Kent yet it's posted as a DYK on your userpage. Most people don't look favorably upon claiming credit for just nominating something. You also don't seem to have written most of the text on Jet Propulsion Laboratory Science Division.
  • "Soliquy" is not a word; did you mean "soliloquy"? (Although how is your userpage a place of a dramatic device?)

Unrelated to your userpage, I have concerns over the GA of Stephen Colbert. A review in 2 days? I see multiple issues: two external links mid-article, a whole unsourced paragraph (under "Other work"), another under "The Daily Show", two more under "Awards and honors", and numerous other unsourced sentences, plus the "Filmography" section's table needs sources and a minor copyedit. You should address these issues immediately, lest someone else notices and wants a GA reassessment. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 02:26, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'll try and fix the problems with Stephen Colbert, they don't seem to be too hard to fix. In regards to my userpage I'll get rid of that crap, dunno why I added it anyway. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 2:01pm • 03:01, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
