Advice for newbies

Avoid verbs (often followed by the word "that") which may be used to suggest negative comparison and would thus be potentially divisive, such as:

believes, considers, finds, knows, prefers, thinks, wishes.

Avoid negative verb phrases which can be potentially divisive, such as:

dislikes, despises, hates, loathes

Also avoid compound sentences which are positive and negative, such as:

This user likes <noun phrase>, but does not like <another noun phrase> Lucas559 (talk) 18:58, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Attempted to add an historical account to the oobleck section of the non-Newtonian fluids page. I understand the edit that it appears you made. Perhaps a new page is in order to expound on oobleck, linked to the existing section of the non-Newtonian page? Hoping this is the appropriate way to contact you, fuþorc — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fuþorc (talkcontribs) 02:55, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

User:Fuþorc Yes, user talk pages are a good place to discuss issues like yours. Remember to sign all your comments ~~~~ An automated bot signed for you in this case and that's how I knew it was you. Oobleck probably doesn't deserve a dedicate wiki page. Try adding a link to your source in the external section of that page; add commentary beside the link explaining what it is, e.g., history of oobleck.

bot

If you are going to run a bot that notifies editors of problems, perhaps it might be a good idea to actually tell them what the problems are. Despitr my many years here, I do make errors from time to time, as does anyone who edits extensively, I am always glad to be notified of anything I have done which might been an error, but I don't expect to have to chase down on other pages what the error might haver been. DGG ( talk ) 19:18, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Yup the {{subst:NCP}} should only be used when an issue is confirmed. This needs to be followed by which edit was of concern and what source it appears to be copied from.
Also remember to add your ~~~~ after subing the template. Best Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 07:33, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Copyright patrol

Hi! It's always nice to see other people keeping an eye out for copyright problems here on the wiki. Some comments, though: When you make a post like this one, can you make sure to explain which parts of the edit are too close to the original? Some of the hardest copyvio problems to clean up are close paraphrases, so we generally recommend that editors rewrite material entirely from scratch.

Also, if there is really a problem then the content contributor should be notified, and the article tagged with something like {{close paraphrasing}} or followed through with one of the other recommended actions listed at WP:DCV so that it can be revisited later. Copyright problems are one of those areas where it's both easy to lose track of issues and important not to. VernoWhitney (talk) 00:36, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

VernoWhitney thanks for the advice, much appreciated. That user was pinged, i.e., notified, on the talk page. I am trying not edit copyvio problems and rather have the user or page watchers address the issue. It is so time consuming. But as you suggested, I will make more explicit mention of the infraction in question.
VernoWhitney please follow my efforts and keep providing helpful suggestions to improve my efficacy.
Sorry about overlooking that they would be pinged--I was inactive when it went live and it's still not second-nature to me yet. I understand you're not trying to edit copyvio problems, but they often arise because the editor is either A) unwilling to write something in their own words, or B) unable to re-write something so that it is not a close paraphrase copyvio. If A, then somebody else needs to be notified--that's why there's a process for how to notify editors who are specifically willing to deal with copyright problems anywhere on-wiki (rather than just in the medical area, which I gather has been working out just fine for you for a while now). If B, then even one example of 'this' is too close to 'that' can sometimes be enough to get them to clean it up, so thank you for your consideration in pointing out particular problems identified by the bot. Cheers! VernoWhitney (talk) 22:45, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

I have a somewhat related question for you: I noticed that User:EranBot/Copyright/rc has users tag entries as true or false positives--do you know if these are getting fed back into EranBot to improve it in any fashion? If so, do you think a report of any false negatives (copyvio additions that were missed by EranBot) also be of interest? VernoWhitney (talk) 19:13, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

We are keeping track of how acurate the bot is. Unfortunately the bot goes down from time to time and edits that occur when the bot is down will be missed. We need to get further programming support similar to Special:NewPagesFeed before collecting bot misses would be useful. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:22, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the info. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:35, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Direction of copying

Hi, I followed up your recent comment at WT:PLANTS. However, the copyright detection process needs to take into account the direction of copying and whether it matters. For example, The Plant Encyclopedia copies from Wikipedia, and is anyway an opensource wiki. So it must not be included in analyses. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:17, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

I came here to remark sort of the same thing. If you're the one maintaining the bot, some heueristics to keep in mind are for example if the external page has many links to Wikipedia within the identical text, it is likely that the external page is a fork. Other indications that it may be a fork are a link to the actual page the content was on, or anything with a short levenshtein distance to "copied from Wikipedia" or "taken from Wikipedia". Finally, if content has organically grown on Wikipedia, it is likely to be a fork as well, but this is slightly trickier to investigate. 92.64.31.85 (talk) 12:36, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Additionally, everything on Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/All are known forks, so those could be skipped as well. 92.64.31.85 (talk) 13:06, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Yes so User:Peter coxhead the whitelist of websites that the bot ignores is here User:EranBot/Copyright/Blacklist
Please add known mirrors to this list
This bot works within a couple of the hours of the edits being made.
We also want people to state in the edit summary if they have moved content around Wikipedia. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 13:12, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
The handful of examples from the mirrors and forks page I tried are included in the blacklist. It would take software to check if it is included in its entirety, which is not completely trivial to write. I don't mind doing that, but I would like to know in advance if it has already been done, so I won't waste my time if it is. The heuristics I suggested obviously can't be compiled into a blacklist, but they are not entirely foolproof: only if a proper attribution link exists on the suspected source page, there is certainty it's not a copyvio. 92.64.31.85 (talk) 13:30, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
User:Eran is the programmer of the bot. This list was build by hand by the medical editors primarily. The bot used to just run on medical content. It just launched on all content thus unlikely other domains are there. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 13:52, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Some months back all of Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/All was replicated onto the blacklist, but recent additions to /All may need to be synched in. I've rather neglected the blacklist recently. LeadSongDog come howl! 20:38, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Comment requiring more action to reply

You made this comment, here [2], without making clear the article or point of editing where the copy-and-past issue might have arisen. This is such an oddity, as I am an academic, and simply never do what you describe—I routinely run plagiarism software on WP articles, and post queries to reverse them—so either there are others accessing this IP (happens routinely), or the observation us mistaken or a misunderstanding (e.g., my moving around preexisting plagiarised text, within an article, during an edit, rather than introducing it anew). Let me know of which work and article you speak, and I will reply gain here. Cheers, Le Prof. 71.201.62.200 (talk) 04:41, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

71.201.62.200 the article in question is Kermit Roosevelt, Jr. but I cannot seem to find the particular revision in question. I made no edit or comment on the talk page that I can see. Sorry for being so vague. At the time of that edit, I was just getting familiar using the new Eranbot tool. Lucas559 (talk) 05:46, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
AOK, but nothing plagiarised by me in that article (though I may have moved about others' cribbings). In fact, my only interest there has been citation checking, where, for instance, most information attributed to the democracynow.org web page (a poor source to start with) was misattribution, and so needed correction, or removal of citation.
Could this be a problem with the bot? Also, how can I find out more about what wikipedia does on plagiarism checking? This is of deep interest to this Prof [see User:Leprof_7272], and was news to me. Cheers. 71.201.62.200 (talk) 15:37, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
71.201.62.200 I will refer you to WP:CP because it is very informative and I do not have enough experience yet to directly answer your question. I do know that the CorenSearch Bot is one of the primary tools for spotting plagiarism; it checks all new pages, but only new pages. After that point, the new EranBot becomes the bot looking for plagiarism since it checks all edits, new page or existing article. I like {{subst:Cclean|url= }} and try to clean up copyvio as I find them. If you add Twinkle to your user page there are nice options for speedy deletion requests and the like. Notifying users of issues

Hello, Lucas. :) Happy to see you're still busy working on copyright issues! I just wanted to ask you to please notify the users on their talk pages when you remove their content. These notices are important; Wikipedia:Copyright violations asks people to please notify the contributors of copyrighted content if they can be identified. There are a number of templates that can help with this, but for newcomers {{uw-copyright-new}} may be particularly helpful, as it explains. You can, of course, also use {{NCP}}. That it's intended for user pages and not article talk pages is pretty clear, I think, in that it uses the second person address "your".

I know mentioned some of the values of notification before, but in brief, these notices can:

  • Educate users so that they may stop,
  • Alert other contributors to problems so they look in future, and
  • Create a record of efforts to address in case the user does not stop and a block becomes necessary.

Pinging people on a talk page may serve the first purpose (assuming they understand the pinging system), but it doesn't help with the other two, which are critical for protecting Wikipedia from repeat infringers.

You can simplify placing standardized notices by installing Wikipedia:Twinkle, if you like. This makes placing a user warning notice as simple as selecting the right notice and optionally adding an article title. I <3 Twinkle. :D --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:45, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

User:Moonriddengirl thanks for the reminder. So many of these user talk pages have never been used and sometimes it seem futile leaving messages in a mailbox that might never be checked. No excuse, I will add {{uw-copyright-new}} and keep exploring the fun world of copyvio.--Lucas559 (talk) 17:33, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Meigs Elevated Railway

Thank you for being vigilant regarding copyright violations. However, I think that this change was overzealous, because the article is as clearly cited fom Scientific American from 10 July 1886, and thus not covered by copyright. I kindly request that you reverse your change, but feel free to reword it, if you think the language is a bit non-modern. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 17:58, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

NearEMPTiness no problem, edit reversed. I read 1986, not 1886. I linked directly to where I thought the problem arose, hence an easy backtrack.--Lucas559 (talk) 18:03, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the very quick action. However, the revert went full circle without the intended result. Please double-check. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 18:05, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Sorry for the confusion, Lucas559. I just noticed it was PD and corrected. :) NearEMPTiness, please remember to include notice of direct copying. These are required under Wikipedia:Plagiarism and can also go a long way to help avoid complications with copyright concerns. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:41, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

You left the following note

… at an IP address: "We run "copy and paste" detection software on new edits. One of your edits appear to be infringing on someone else's copyright. We at Wikipedia usually require paraphrasing. If you own the copyright to this material please send permission for release under a CC BY SA license to permissions-en@wikimedia.org per WP:CONSENT. Even CC-BY content like medlibrary.org needs to be paraphrased and well cited.--Lucas559 (talk) 20:01, 17 June 2015 (UTC)"

Because it contained no link or other specific information regarding the alleged copy and paste, I could offer no response (immediately, and am only offering this, for closure). Otherwise, please note, I may move unattributed content from place to place within articles (e.g., between sections), sometimes in a series of edits so that it may appear I have added new outside information without attribution. But I never, repeat never, copy and past new material into Wikipedia without attribution. Please see User:Leprof_7272 for more information. Cheers. Norseman Gold Mine

Hi Lucas559, thank you for your message concerning copyright. The paragraphs concerned were copied and pasted from my own web page at http://www.ADVFN.com under NGX, only accessable as a free member. The copyright is held by Norseman Gold PLC and the ASX reference is temporary as the Norseman website is down for updating; Norseman actually place all announcements with ASX and the ASX copyright is more of a safeguard than a right to it. The company can give no time limit as to the availability. Norseman Gold PLC has been suspended for nearly three years from the ASX, in Australia there is no limit of time for remaining with the ASX for announcements, unlike most other countries - subject to a short delay after 31st August for some reason which is unknown to me. I have permission to paste information at ADVFN providing no modificaton or addition is made, however, this does refer to ADVFN and it may be best to wait for the new Norseman website to be up and running again before making a further request.

If a paragraph is copied and pasted to Wikipedia and then altered to new paraphrasing, would it still show up as a copy and paste? Regards (Noirua (talk) 22:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC))

  • Noirua we do not allow copy and pasting content into Wiki and then paraphrasing. Too many editors get lazy and do not paraphrase adequately or at all. You should try to paraphrase outside of Wiki and then bring it over.--Lucas559 (talk) 15:28, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
  • Noirua as for ADVFN, copyright law gets tricky. One thing to remember is that Wiki is CC-BY-SA. That means anyone is free to use Wiki content and make modifications. So, even if you "paste information at ADVFN providing no modificaton or addition is made" that limitation is not implied or enforced by CC-BY-SA. All content needs to be free to use and abuse. You'll need to quote and cite and then it should be fine.--Lucas559 (talk) 15:28, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Lucas559, thanks for your help and advice, very much appreciated. (Noirua (talk) 18:24, 15 September 2015 (UTC))

Bhaktamar Stotra

Thanks for ur help and advice. The information is in the public domain. Bhaktamar Stotra is common knowledge for we Jains. Many Jains know the Bhaktamar Stotra by-heart. We learn the Bhaktamar Stotra from our childhood. Please guide me what should I do.

ASethi ASethi (talk) 18:56, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
ASethi, please read WP:public domain since I suspect that applies in this case. In the actual article, you'll see that I hid a comment about copyright, [4]. You can change that comment with the facts of the situation. Most people think it is okay to include lyrics to poems or songs, but rarely is that allowed (even if cited), unless it's public domain.--Lucas559 (talk) 19:10, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Lucas559 Thanks a lot. Bhaktamar Stotra is at least a thousand years old. It has been passed from generation to generation. Everyday millions of devotees recite this Stotra. Just like there can be no copyright on the Bible, similarly there can be no copyright on the Bhaktamar Stotra. Please feel free to guide and help me.

Copy and pasting from Eustace to John Folville

Hi Lucas you have flagged a potential copyright violation on User talk:Sliven2000. All I did was to move a section of text from the old Eustace Folville article to a new John Folville article. John was Eustace's father so the info about their ancestry is more appropriate there. No new text was added; it was just moved. In other words what am I supposed to do (if anything)? Sliven2000 (talk) 18:43, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply Sliven2000. Just include something like "copied content from "article name" (attribution on history page)." The "copied from" puts users tracking copyright violations at ease - it's transparent.
You should check out Eranbot. We don't have it linked to people's wikiprojects (areas of interest), but you can search by projects if you load the script (see instructions on the top of the page). --Lucas559 (talk) 18:55, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Two Minutes' Silence

You reverted my "good faith" addition, yet you have the nerve then to say, "I like you contribution" ! Typical Wikipedia Gestapo action, that. Destroy rather than improve. You ask, "why did you reference facebook?" Very simple - that's where I found it. *I* do not have the "copy and paste detection software" about which you boast. If *you* object (as you did) to the cut-&-paste (which I do understand), then *you* should paraphrase, which would improve the entry. Merely taking the easy option of reverting makes the entry WORSE. Do what you like; I've done my bit - drawn attention to a very relevant aspect, that I found missing from the entry. That is the only reason I went to that page in the first place. Copy and pasting

Thank you for the message regarding copyright and paraphrasing. The work I was using is already in public domain. It uses some words not commonly found today, but the analysis is quite good, so I try only to change sparingly. If this is not acceptable, I can rewrite the parts with my own words. Peace. JohnThorne (talk) 22:48, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

User:JohnThorne based on what criteria is it in the public domain? Thanks Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 03:15, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
It is in the public domain in the US due to publication prior to 1923.<ref>https://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm</ref> JohnThorne (talk) 22:20, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

I appreciate your advice and have undertaken a series of copy edits to the article. Unfortunately the tool you are using is a paid service, so I'm not able to confirm whether I've picked up all the issues. Could you let me know if there is anything I've missed. Dan arndt (talk) 04:26, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Dan arndt, thanks for looking into that. The tool I'm using is Eranbot and is accessible to any wikipedian. The underlying Turnitin software is proprietary and we cannot get it to do plagiarism checks on demand. They basically run searches for us for free when their tool is not at full capacity. We can use Coren to request a specific copyvio check...but lots of false positives for older articles with content mirrored on the web. It's report (bottom of list) is clean. Note: CorenSearchBot and EranBot have different repositories of data to compare wiki content to and, thus, one might think an edit is 'clean' and the other flags it. We can consider this issue settled and thanks for helping to eliminate copyright violations.--Lucas559 (talk) 18:48, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
It was my fault for lazy editing - appreciate you highlighting it to me. Dan arndt (talk) 22:34, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. User:EranBot/Copyright/rc

Hi Lucas559. I have archived material from User:EranBot/Copyright/rc to User:EranBot/Copyright/rc/17. I wonder if you could check and make sure I did it correctly? Thanks, -- Diannaa (talk) 16:22, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Diannaa thanks for helping archive. Since you are a librarian, you likely did a better job than me :) We have lot of improvements to make with this bot, so if you have any suggestions please add them to the talk page. Great to see other users helping patrol copyvios. --Lucas559 (talk) 18:54, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
Diannaa, wow! Thanks for all your efforts with copyvios and Eranbot. Somedays I check-in and there's nothing to do because you're so fabulous.
