Updating Portal questions

I see two updates needed ... one for this weekend; and, I'd like to have an update for July 4th. With that in mind, the FA for the 4th should be a heavy hitter. There seemed to be an pattern — infantry, aviation, bio, infantry, aviation ... but then we had memorial, and band. We were thinking about making this the feature article in the USMC Portal for the 4th of July weekend. Actually there is! If you really want to help you can rewrite the History section. Whoever wrote it the first time literally cut and pasted it from Beaufort SC Military bases, Parris Island Marine Corps Recruiting Depot South Carolina. I was going to go to the External links and rewrite the section with footnotes. If you can use any books during the process, all the better! Palm_Dogg 13:15, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Update on Medal of Honor recipient articles

Two milestones:

• All USMC Medal of Honor recipients from the Korean War now have articles.
• Over 190 articles completed.

You got the hard part out of the way and that is creating all of them. If I ever get off my ass and create the rest of the A/C squadron articles I might be able to put together a decent list. • I don't think that it is correct to say that 2/9 is now 2/4. 2/9 is an inactive battalion it's Marines were were just renamed but the battalion's history has not become part of 2/4's.. There is a good chance that the battalion will stand up again. The Marine Corps' end strength was increased to 180,000 last year. 1/9 was activated again last November and the Mrine Corps has been looking to stand up another infantry battalion. "Hell in a Helmet" may be back hooking and jabbing before you know it.--Looper5920 20:24, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

I think the medals at the end of the WWII section may be better incorporated into the larger list at the end. Take a look at 3rd Battalion 1st Marines as a possible example. Want a new challenge?

I noticed that you had made a reference addition to Battle of Saipan. That motivated me to do some cleanup in formatting and copyedits. After reading the article, and some of the USMC monograph, I think that this would be a good candidate to try to get to Featured Article status. There seems to be sufficient reference information in the online sources, especially Hoffman's work, to make a go of it. If you are interested, let me know. 1/9 question

I note that 1st Battalion 9th Marines is on the USMC portal's "expand" request list. In the intro to the article, it says the 1/9 was reactivated in 2005. I don't find any official info in usmc.mil pages. Do you have a reference? — ERcheck (talk) 23:39, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

• From what I know, the Anti Terrorism Battalion of the 4th MEB that was established after 9/11 was transitioned to 1/9 in November of last year. The last defense Budget authorized an increase in the USMC end strength to 180,000. Out of the 6,ooo+ Marines added, the Commandant wanted 2 more infantry battalions. This is the battalion's website 1/9 Website. They are still being formed so there is not much info available
  • Do you have a reference for the activation date? (I was going to expand the article; I wanted to start first with the current commander and was then stymied by the lack of immediately available info. — ERcheck (talk) 23:57, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

• Yeah, I am about to roll out a VMF-221 article which entails the creation of VMSB-241 since they were the two squadrons that were decimated during the Battle of Midway. The commander of VMSB-241 was Maj Loftus Henderson, the 1st Marine aviator to die during the war and the man that Henderson Field on Guadalcanal was named after. Any Ideas?

I'm scratching my head. Silvestre S. Herrera made DYK and somebody added his "Primier Merito Miltar" to the military info box. This award was something like an honorary award given to him by the Mexican government. Now, the question is, should the award be in the info box along with the U.S. medals which he earned? • Thanks for the note. I never realized how big the project was going to be when I started it. I have just ordered a bunch of books so hopefully in a few months it will be where I want it to be. There is a dearth of info on decommissioned reserve squadrons, squadrons created late in WWII that never got overseas and just some WWII squadrons in general. I haven't even really touched the prior to WWII squadrons other than creating redesignations. You don't happen to live near Pensacola do you? If I could get into the Naval Aviation Museum that would help clear much of this up. ANyway, thanks for the note and it appears the RFA is going well.   • Akin to taking on USMC Medal of Honor recipients. I've finished the major conflicts of the 20th century. The Civil War, Banana Wars, etc., in general have more limited information and very short citations. No, I'm not near Pensacola at all. The Naval Aviation Museum there is great. (Have you had a chance to visit the National World War II Museum[5] in New Orleans? Worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood. Thanks on the RFA. Thanks for tagging the articles the Rlevse noted on my talk page. I've added assessments to them.

Comment on the Guy Gabaldon article. The Navy Cross image had been in the infobox, but I moved it down with the citation. See my comments on Tony the Marine's talk page (referencing del Valle, but still the same reasoning). • I made the Navy Cross edit last night. Honestly my only thought was that it didn't look right where it was at. I agree that only MOHs should be in the infobox. USMC Template

I think that's a perfectly good idea; though I think the Template:US Navy navbox displays a better selection of subtopics. For outsiders, subcommands aren't wholly interesting and not among the most important things they're looking for. As a start, all the "Main Article" links should probably be put into such a template.

• I note that the USN has a template {{US Navy navbox}}; and also the USAF uses a similar template ({{USAF}}). But, the Army does not use the same style. I think the USN and USAF ones look a little better and provide an easier navigation of the main topics, though they provide different information. Barnstar

Thanks for the barnstar, though my tirelessness pales next to your 12k+ edits. On a sidenote, what do you think of the existing extensive Army vs. Marine uniform comparison? I think most of it can be shuffled off as Marine uniform details under the appropriate uniform type (e.g. boot blousing), and the section shrunk to distinct differences, not comparing where rank insignia are. Everybody's new utilities also complicates it; I'm not even that familiar with the ACU's or the Navy working uniform. It seems the sleeves rolled with camo or white out is an obsolete comparison, though for historical purposes it's still worth a mention; historically it was one distinguishing characteristic. --Mmx1

More care in reversion

I don't think you did this on purpose, but when you were reverting Neurotically Yours while it was being vandalised you reverted to a bad version, which caused the person reverting after you to revert to your version which was bad. What do you think about selecting some articles to put up for Good Article nomination? Some ideas:

  • Foss is good but still needs some work. For a guy that did so much the article just needs more information. The WWII piece needs additional info as well the squadron patch for Joe's Jokers (named after him). Agree that it is close though.

On another note I am very close to finishing the USMC template I had spoken of a week or two ago. Is there a List of United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients? I think it would good in there. This is what I have so far, let me know what you think:

I have the page in my Sandbox, but haven't posted it. The USMC recipients for all of the major conflicts (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam) of the 20th century are all wikilinked and have articles. Most of the inter-war awards and the 19th Century awards are omitted due to the lack of information available and/or the different standards for award at the time might make their articles of questionable notability. Perhaps a single "list" completed for these conflicts, with format similar to the List of Hispanic Medal of Honor recipients? — ERcheck (talk) 09:21, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
