New updating implementation for USMC Portal

edit

Hi there. See you have been dropping in for a few edits on a semi-regular basis. Hope all is well and your are settled in an safe.

As my time on Wikipedia has been limited from time to time; and as Bahamut0013, who has been helping keep the USMC Portal updated, will be away for awhile, I've set up a "semi-automatic" updating scheme (based on the USAF portal). See the Portal talk page and the coordination page (at top of page) for details. Feel free to make some choices, at your leisure, for posting and create them in advance.

Love to hear your comments. — ERcheck (talk) 21:26, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! Haven't seen you around much lately, I hope all is well.
Might as well mention it now: I'll be back in Iraq soon after the new year, at Al Asad Airbase. I hope to still be able to make some contributions while overseas, but you know that would be tenuous at best. Anyway, my best to you and yours. bahamut0013 02:54, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

I want to feature Image:A004.jpg on the USMC portal sometime this summer, but I need a little more info than you gave in the upload form. The caption you gave was: "USMC convoys staging prior to going north into Portrush in March of 2003"... now, Portrush is a town in Ireland. I'm guessing that it's Kuwait somewhere, can you tell me exactly where? What unit you were with when you took it? I would appreciate it. bahamut0013 02:00, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

new project

edit

I'm planning to take on a project for the rest of the month, and I was wondering if you'd like to join me. I'm planning on replacing the award ribbons on various US military biography and unit pages with the new vector images. There is a .SVG file available for all US awards and most authorized foreign awards (see the templates: interservice, Army, DoN, USAF, USCG, and foreign). I'll also take the opportunity to replace ribbon rack images (where multiple awards are lumped into a single image) and create a ribbon rack table on articles that have a simple list (see example ).
Are you interested in coordinating? If you are not, do you have any advice for me (I'm sure you've created many more biographies than I)? bahamut0013 19:16, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question on the U.S. Air Commandos

edit

Hello Looper, I had correspondence with a Mr or Ms GlubbDrubb querying that there should be references to the article but I responded that there were rather obvious references on the piece mentioned. I had no idea what he was talking about, and he said that you had done some sort of review on it. To reprint the conversation- [edit] 1st Air Commando Group G'Day (or night) Glubbdrubb. I'm rather intrigued by your message about citing sources, as I will paste below, the article has several sources listed [edit] Notes ^ p.176 Busch, Bryan Cooper Bunker Hill to Bastogne: Elite Forces and American Society 2006 Brasseys ^ http://www.explorepahistory.com/hmarker.php?markerId=958 ^ p.2627 Various authors Marshall Cavendish Encyclopedia of World War II 1985 ^ Sikorsky R-4 history ^ a b Masters, John The Road Past Mandalay Michael Joseph (1961) ^ Yancey, Madonna United States Air Force Air Commandos 2000 Turner Publishing. p.6 ^ Yancey, Madonna United States Air Force Air Commandos 2000 Turner Publishing. p.20 ^ http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,897935,00.html I have noticed on many Wikipedia articles a message at the top saying an article needs sources, yet they are referenced at the bottom of the page. At first I thought that initially the message was put on before there were any sources, with someone later adding them. Here I've quite a few. Could you explain to help my understanding of a good Wikipedia article please?Foofbun (talk) 23:41, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I must be honest and say that my entire basis for what I said was the review Looper5920 (talk) had given it. Citations and referencing is not my strong :point so I would suggest that you :take it up with Looper5920 or with one of the other members of the military task :force. I hope you resolve this issue so we can "upgrade" this article's grading. --Glubbdrubb (talk) 19:12, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

So, as I'm FAIRLY new or should I say not used to to Wikipedia quality, could you please elaborate why an article with many references needs references please? Thank youFoofbun (talk) 02:33, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Want to Help

edit

Hello,

My grandfather is Lt. Col. Carl P. Writer who flew with the VMF-223 in WWII in the Pacific. He was shot down once and got back up in the air to fight. I have many photos, log books, etc. and he is still alive. I would like to add the information he has and photos if possible to Wikipedia. Don't really know what I am doing but I would think it an honor to get his information in there. Thanks for any information or guidance.

edit

I apologize, but I had to undo your edit that removed the brutality section. IMO, it may have been poorly worded and speculative, but I believe the editor is owed the opportunity to provide sources. I tagged it up pretty good and will be checking back on it for a week, then I plan to kill it. Again, sorry, especially since my gut agrees with you.

Nevermind then.

Vulture19 (talk) 05:26, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Personally, I didn't think the original editor would have cited them, then I could have deleted it. But, I wanted to know the truth anyway. It's true. So to avoid an edit war, if I re-include the contested section and cite one of the incidents (from the New York Times), but leave the rest, are you going to revert it?

Thanks for uploading File:Overhead MCAS Santa Barbara in April of 1944.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

I recently expanded Marine Security Guard. However, the best reference, GlobalSecurity.org, is somewhat out of date. It lists only Companies A through G, when the official website lists contacts for H and I as well with no further data other than their existance. It also refers to former Soviet nations in fairly recent terms. I was wondering if you had a more up-to-date reference?? Marine Aerial Nav School

In the article on Marine Aerial Navigator insignia it indicates that MANS was closed, and that is my understanding as well. The article on Marine Aviation Training Support Group 22 seems to have the best account of the school, but does not mention it. I see you are a main contributor to the latter. Rather than make the alteration, I'm referring it to you. LilHelpa (talk) 18:34, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

What are your concerns?

I found little that was salvageable from the original article, but I did use some of the material to start the new writing...sort of like yeast to make it rise (lol). I had a fair offline start on the new article that I pasted in. And I just got tired of looking at an online mess.

If you take a look, you will see little notes hinting at future development. I do have several books to refer to, and I have my personal experience to help guide me.

Take a look, looper. If you still have some concerns, let me know. You may aim me in some good directions.

What are your specific concerns with my wording? Also note that I made several other changes to hyphenation later in the article; it's never a good idea to revert wholesale. DS (talk) 19:50, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The hyphens will live, God forbid they got reverted. It is also not a good idea to make wholesale changes to the introduction of an article that is known to be controversial without discussing it first. Your wording completely changed the introduction and is a weasel attempt to portray Jamal's innocence in the introduction for the article of the man he was convicted of killing. --Looper5920 (talk) 20:05, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're quite correct in that I should have discussed it first. Not all criminals protest their innocence. This is a controversial case, though, and we should mention that. Did he kill Faulkner? I don't know. You don't know either. Only the people who were there know. We do know that he was convicted of it, though (and I find it interesting that you yourself said "the man he was convicted of killing" instead of the more definitive "the man he murdered"). Anyway, I've spent a lot of time reading our Wrongful Conviction articles; they really do a lot to one's opinion of the death penalty (oh, and for the record, I think that Faulkner's murder was a horrible tragedy). Haditha killings article edit

edit

Your use of the phrase "words mean something" in your edit summary regarding your reverting of my edit to this article, in my opinion comes off as somewhat condescending in this context. Remember, there are in fact actual human beings out here who really are trying to act in "good faith"WP:AGF as editors in an attempt to help build a better encyclopedia. My specific reasoning for adding this article to the "massacre" category was the fact that the word is used in the first sentence of the piece as part of a descriptor of the event itself. I do have to disagree with your 'hard and fast' definition of the term; for instance, looking down the list of "massacres" included in the article List of events named massacres, it appears to me that there is quite a lot of room for manoeuvring. In that context, it appears to be validly applied to events ranging from the wholesale slaughter of tens of thousands, right down to the shooting of five people at the "Boston Massacre". I think it may have deactivated with its sister squadron HMH-769, but there are no pres releases or anything to indicate as such. It's unit website still says it falls under MAG 46. Some of your lists

edit

Good day to you sir, I am attempting to get some of the USMC articles (particularly lists) up to featured status and I was pointed to a couple of yours relating to Active and inactive USMC aviation units and 1 in particular seems to be approaching FL status. That is the active aviation units one that you got to A class status. I made a couple of changes already and was about to make some more before I was stopped and pointed in your direction. Before I make the chanegs I will point some of them out and we can go from there. Please don't think I am critisizing your work I think you have done a fantastic job and I think this article is very close to featured list and most of these are minor changes.

  • There are quite a few dead links due to a recent revamp of the USMC homepage.
  • there are several sections that are a little spartan as far as content and before it gets submitted I think they should be expanded. Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron for example.
  • The this is a list bit is deprectated so that can be removed.
  • The lead needs to be expanded a bit, including some info about what the marine corps is, aviation in relation to the USMC and some general info about the content of the aricle (how many active squadrons there are for example).
  • The references should come before the template.
  • Some of the units in the tables do not have a reference.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. --Kumioko (talk) 16:59, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

You do realise, don't you, that the refereed sentence immediately above says that the JSOTF-AP is always organised around an SFG HQ - which would make it very likely that the units involved are Army SOF? Buckshot06(prof) 19:29, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Book and CAF article

edit

Just thought you might like to know of a good book that I've read recently and thought you might be interested in:

  • Mrazek, Robert J. (2008). A Dawn Like Thunder: The True Story of Torpedo Squadron Eight. Little, Brown and Company. ISBN 0316021393. {{cite book}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |coauthors= (help)- About Hornet's torpedo squadron which was almost completely wiped out at Midway but was reconstituted and served with the CAF on Guadalcanal. One of the best Pacific War books that I've read.

By the way, I'm thinking of moving and enlarging the "Operations" section from the CAF article into a different article called, "Air war over Guadalcanal" or something like that, so that it can cover the entire aerial part of the Guadalcanal campaign as well as both the Allied and Japanese sides. Please let me know if you think that's a bad idea. I still plan on helping finish the CAF article also. Cla68 (talk) 11:16, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

editorials?

edit

Dunno if you have Marine One watchlisted or not, but I thought I'd draw your attention to some recent edits. The downright fascist web filtering we have on our net usage is blocking me from seeing these refs properly, and I'm dubious about just how encyclopedic a "helpful editorial" can be. It might also be better at VH-71 instead. Given that the user seems to be a SPA, I'm wondering is this might be some political axe-grinding. Duncan D. Hunter awards

Do you have a ref for the awards you added to Duncan D. Hunter? Or were you merely making some educated guesses based on the biography? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 16:54, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't have a ref for them. They are based on his deployments and times. There are probably a few personal awards in there as well. The only way to get that info would be to email his staff or get hold of his DD-214.--Looper5920 (talk) 17:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Gabi Simson

edit

The article Gabi Simson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No substantial claim of notability, fails WP:ENT. No sourcing, no Google News hits, negligible substantive Google search results

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. As a member of the Aviation WikiProject or one of its subprojects, you may be interested in testing your skills in the Aviation Contest! I created this contest, not to pit editor against editor, but to promote article improvement and project participation and camraderie. Hopefully you will agree with its usefulness. Sign up here, read up on the rules here, and discuss the contest here. The first round of the contest may not start until September 1st-unless a large number of editors signup and are ready to compete immediately! Fake veteran

edit

Hi Looper! I've not edited in a very long time, but as you are a veteran, and still active here, I thought you might like to see this. There is a user named Hueydoc who has posted pics of himself in uniform wearing a bunch of ribbons and medals, to include the Soldiers Medal (for peacetime valor) and the Bronze Star. He has pictures of himself as a captain, then miraculously he becomes a Lieutenant Colonel in a pic from a year later. He has more rows of awards than a Banana Republic general, and is wearing a CIB, aviator (or aircrew) wings, airborne and air assault wings (which are positioned too low on the pocket), a slew of unit citations, and he looks to be way over-weight. A gallery for your enjoyment:

As you can see, as a severely overweight Captain, from pic 1 to pic 2, he has been awarded a Bronze Star, even though I don't see...

You know what, forget it. I will cut to the chase instead of listing everything that is wrong with this Jesse Macbeth wanna-be. First, you know better than me at this point who the vets are on here now, since I have been inactive for a while. Could you (no pressure) let them know about this guy and also if you are an administrator, is there a way get his user page of lies deleted? Or maybe we should let it stand - the Stolen Valor Act imposes a $5000 fine for a false claim of a Bronze Star, Soldiers Medal, etc...hehehe --Nobunaga24 (talk) 01:58, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

It appears that his combat unit patch is for special forces, he's wearing aviators wings as well as infantry badges, and in the Lt Col photo is wearing jump wings from some foreign military that I don't recognize. Cla68 (talk) 05:45, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, it explains on his userpage that they're Canadian jump wings. Cla68 (talk) 05:49, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:3 4colorlogo.jpg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:3 4colorlogo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:W2 usmc vmf214 boyington.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:37, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, maybe

edit

[2] It might actually be true that airmen are generally in better shape immediately after basic training than USMC recruits, perhaps because the AF recruits don't suffer as many injuries since most of their training is in the classroom instead of in the field. Based on my experience, however, they don't stay that way for very long. That goes for the officers too. I once had a boss (an AF lieutenant colonel), promoted below-the-zone, who bragged that she had never passed a PT test in her entire career. How's that for setting a good example? Speedy deletion nomination of File:Vmfa 232.jpg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Vmfa 232.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

AfD nomination of Philadelphia slang

edit

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Philadelphia slang. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Philadelphia slang. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

China Marine (memoir)

edit

Hello, I've noticed that you make effective and well worded edits and have recently done so on With the Old Breed. If you're interested in helping clean up another article about another Eugene Sledge book, I've cobbled together an initial stub on China Marine which sorely needs both another viewpoint and the touch of someone who knows the English language better than me. If not, let me know if you know anyone else who's interested. I'll follow your talk page for a few days. Thanks for reading this. Trilobitealive (talk) 04:04, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

    • When you get back to it the most trouble I had not adding OR was with the discussion of his hatred of the Japanese soldiers. I knew him in life, knew he had a number of Japanese students, and he spoke of Japanese professional associates and friends he highly regarded. He treated them decently and in a kindly manner but in his books he skims over this. He hated the Japanese army and its soldiers with an undying hatred but made scant mention of the honorable way he treated the Japanese on campus. You can't really see past his hatred to the love of humanity sometimes just from the writing itself. Trilobitealive (talk) 16:50, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm really not sure. The claim that the MOPH chapter named after him is a bit dubious since thier website doesn't mention him aside from that really odd "citation," which I find just as dubious as you do. The service number (misnamed a "serial" number) given doesn't match the block issued during the time frame (they weren't issuing 2xx,xxx numbers in until 1936). I agree on the dubious nature of some of the other claims, especially teh Navy Cross; there would be some kind of record of that. The creator of the article hasn't edited anything else... I smell a possible hoax. I've tagged it with {{Hoax}} and will do more investigations. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 12:41, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Concerning this edit: I sympathise with your desire to retain the mdy format, although I wouldn't buck an existing international format in a US military article if pre-existing (the battleships seem to be all international, per US Navy). However, the date should not be linked, and nor should common terms and common country-names such as the United States. More effective wikilinking if rationed to the uncommon, those that are useful to the reader in understanding the current article. Please see WP:OVERLINK. Thanks. File permission problem with File:Marble Mountain Airifield from above.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Marble Mountain Airifield from above.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 06:38, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

I was adding the Medal of Honor Monument thumb to each recipient, ie. Here, while doing this I noticed between all 4 of the Men's pages thier could be a little more "Uniformity" of thier "Citation" section ie. some citation headers missing, President's name/signature etc. Anyway, it occurred to me (while I was linking words within the Citation) that it is probably not apporiate to change the text of a Citation/Government Document of this type. Of course I'm not talking about actually changing any of the text but Linking the words within the document and seeing the "Blue" text in such a document, Just doesn't seem proper to me. I was "Wikifying" the section and still will work on them but I wanted to bounce this off someone before proceeding. Mlpearc MESSAGE 19:58, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

My personal opinon on this is to not add blue links to the citations and to let them stand on their own. Most of the time the information in the citation has been condensed into prose in the main body of the article with the appropriate links already provided. Thus linking the citation becomes redundant. That being said there is no Wiki policy regarding and I would say use your best judgement as long as the text of the citation is not changed. Hope this helps.--Looper5920 (talk) 04:12, 5 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Was working on the links as per our discussion above, I came across this Ref Here . I feel the same here also. I do have a idea, if someone see's the need for ref can't we not move it to the section header, that would still be appropriate place for "this" ref, I don't know if it appropriate to place Ref's at section headers, your thoughts ? Con Thien

edit

Looper, if you want to make substantive changes to the Con Thien article or correct typos please go ahead, but there is no value in you going through my text and changing the dates from "1 May" to "May 1" or moving photos from gallery into the text body. Regards MZtourist.

The dates can go either way but the way in which you having been writing your updates almost begs for the dates to be changed so it reads more like prose and less like a day by day after action report. As for the images the Wikipedia:Manual of Style and Image Layout Guidelines prefer that they be spaced throughout the article vice in gallerys which unnecessarily break up the page. You'll notice that any decent article in this encyclopedia follows this.--Looper5920 (talk) 03:57, 5 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The way you moved the images in the Con Thien article put them out of context with the text which is why I adopt the gallery format. regards Mztourist(Mztourist (talk) 13:54, 10 March 2010 (UTC))Reply

VPB-104 WWII Pacific Squadron

edit

I'm excited to see activity on the page mentioned, but very concerned about some of your contributions. The current redirect of 104 to 24 greatly confuses the squadron history. I wonder if you would consider undoing the redirect so that the various incarnations of squadrons can evolve independently with cross links.

Please read all of the references in the original article before deciding whether to press for the solution you have proposed. As the 24 November 2009 version of the article points out, there were many changes in the squadron number and mission over the years.

  • NOTE: each of those squadron numbers had very different missions. The mission of VPB-104 was very different from that of previous and subsequent squadron number reassignments. Each number flew different aircraft and most had different squadron commanders. Many also had different aircrews.

Your current redirect of 104 to 24 prevents history specific to each of the squadron numbers from being clearly described and clarified by additional researchers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jw4nvc (talkcontribs) 20:13, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
