Film stub

edit

Why did you change the {{film-stub}} picture? Did I miss the conversation about this, the old version is far better... ~ RoboAction 07:44, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • Two reasons:
    • I think the film reel is kind of cheesy looking, and
    • I favor public domain over copyleft. The public domain belongs, no strings attached, to everyone, and I liked that idea.
  • But if you want to go back to the original image, I won't try and stop you. We each do what we think works best. -Litefantastic 12:02, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Discworld Template

edit
  • Yeah, I get to be the 100th message! Anyway, I was wondering why you haven't changed the DW template over to your new version. I'd do it myself, but I'm sure you have a reason. -Litefantastic 00:31, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
A combination of "lack of time" and cowardice :-) If you reckon there's sufficient agreement on my new format, I would have no trouble with you doing the switch yourself. If I remember later in the day (RL allowing) I'll have a go myself. HTH HAND --Phil | Talk 09:42, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

I am responding your request for a Sandbox Bot. As far as you are aware, is there anyone operating one at the moment? -- AllyUnion (talk) 04:44, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  • No, no one is currently running the sandBot; the box is being cleaned out manually. -Litefantastic 14:54, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • Such a bot I can write, in a few lines of code, using the pywikipediabot framework. How often should this bot run? -- AllyUnion (talk) 22:25, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

InuYasha on Article improvement drive

edit

I have not had much experience with the article improvement drive, so I don't know how effective it would be. Still, it can't hurt, so why not? I think I posted this somewhere before, but just for reference, here is the discussion from the previous Featured Article nomination. Josh 18:40, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

You asked if I knew the copyright status of the pic I uploaded. How do I find that out? I just searched in google and found a pic. The address of it is http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Ottoman.jpg. The site is an online encyclopedia of nations, religious groups organizations, etc. I read this at the bottom of their site: Maps are linked with permission of the Perry-Castañeda Map Library, University of Texas at Austin. Soviet Canuckistan

edit

Okay, fair enough. I didn't stop to see how long ago you did the amerime thing, but I figured that since it was on your user page, it must still be fresh. I guess I snapped because of the tendancy of some American editors to discount things that aren't American as being "non-notable". Canadians got a good laugh out of the Soviet Canuckistan thing -- people were selling t-shirts and bumper stickers, and I think there was a website. regards, Kevintoronto 21:49, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Article Improvement Drive

For your tireless work on rolling over the AID during the past months I award you the Barnstar of Diligence:--Fenice 06:53, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Update

edit

Hi - I updated the AID-page today, Saturday, because of an ongoing edit-war at abortion - the page is locked. We should find some mode of avoiding controversial subjects like that article becoming Improvement Drive projects, because articles like abortion have no chance whatsoever to become featured.--Fenice 19:41, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Actually, no, as I said on the talk-page of the AID, I cannot promise to take on the responsibility completely and by myself (which has nothing to do with the AID but with my real life). I will however try to do much, which can be all of it at times - except for the archiving, which you mentioned above. (I have no idea how to do this archiving and have never done it. Maybe I will change the system so I can handle it.) I have figured out the template thing though, I think, and I created one (IDRIVEtopic) so that the portal page is updated automatically. As you say - if it dies, it dies. I want to give it a chance though, because it is so young. Much of it is a matter of advertising - the AID was not on the main maintenance-templates. I would appreciate it if you stay, but I understand if you don't.--Fenice 05:23, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I have had a look at /history - I can handle that and /removed is not really necessary.--Fenice 06:31, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You asked why I changed the name: I thought 'article' is superfluous because everybody knows we're not improving tomatoes (even though they'd need it). Also, I was trying to find out why it attracts less voters and contributors, and I thought there is no hint in the name that this is on only a limited period of time. Article Improvement Drive sounds like a workshop where continual work is done. I tried to make the signature color more activating to make it look more dynamic. The change in voting system and curbing to one article was proposed and agreed to by others on the talk page. Concerning the mnemonic: I think these articles don't need mercy, they need drive. --Fenice 12:11, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Vinyl record/Gramophone record merge

edit
But "disc record" is a neologism that more people will be unfamiliar with. Not only that but the term on its own merits would also apply to a CD. Better to use "gramophone record" as the main title. And don't forget to put in the redirect from "phonograph record". The first is British and the second is American. Or use "phonograph record" as the main article simply because the US population is 5X the British population so phonograph would theoretically reduce the server redirect activity. --Blainster 06:07, 18 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
See Talk:Gramophone record for the long discussion and vote that resulted in the main article being at that title. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 13:00, 19 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Did you mean to vote on the nomination of Spyware for the improvement drive? You placed your name in the Comments section rather than Support -- I wasn't sure if you meant to make a comment, or to vote in support. --FOo 01:35, 19 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I noticed you pruned 2 of the nominations in the list. It was my understanding of the page that the dates were inclusive, so as to ensure a full week at least for people to vote on a given nomination, but if you are sure this isn't the case I will defer to your experience :) Mallocks 16:02, 20 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

WP:AID

edit

Why did you change the color on the AID template. I'd like to change it back (for template uniformity) but I think it's only fair to hear your side of the argument first. -Litefantastic 00:25, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well, both the AID banner and Wikipedia:Community Portal now use Template:IDRIVE-current. This is so that when the title of the current collaboration is changed in one place, it changes everywhere else it is used. We recently changed all the other collaborations on the Community Portal to use this technique so that the Portal could be locked to protect it from vandalism, while still allowing collaborations to be updated by non-admins. It also makes it impossible to forget to update the Portal when updating the banner. Unfortunately, I had some trouble getting the color of the link to be different on different pages using the same template, so I thought it was easier just to change the color of the AID banner so that text of the same color could be readable on both pages. I think if you moved the [[ ]]'sout of the template and into the two pages that use the template, you could probably use similar markup to what you were using before in the AID banner to make the link text white. Personally, I really don't care what color the banner is, as long as the text is readable and the collaboration title is synced. -- Beland 00:33, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Article improvement drive

edit

I posted this on the Article improvement drive talk page without response: "I'm a little confused by what winning entails. Articles that need the most improvement (i.e., they are "winners" because they are actually quite weak)? Conversely, articles that are very close to FA (winners because they are, in fact, fine articles)? Or is it simply, "I find this topic interesting" and thus I vote? Whichever, it should be made clear at the top of the page." Any comments? A page I work on has been "nominated" but I have no clue what a vote means. That it's totally underweight and needs help? That it's a step away from FA? What? Marskell 22:55, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

The best I can offer you is this circumstantial evidence. Scroll down to the message timestamped 23 Mar 2004 20:23:21. As of now, I cannot find any evidence that this image is in the public domain, nor can I find any evidence that its copyright is still in effect. Its original copyright date is 1939, AFAIK.  Denelson83  02:40, 29 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Gramaphone record - "Making your own records"

edit

Hey,

I was wondering if you added the section about "Making your own records" in the Gramaphone record entry. When I look at the history, that section doesn't appear before your change at 21:45 on 2 November 2005.

If you did, I'm curious if you have any more information related to the "Personal recording devices" section. Such as what those machines are called, what their components are, etc.

If it wasn't you, do you know how to see who made which contributions? I'm brand new to the underbelly of wikipedia and I'm having some trouble understanding how to do different things (the interface isn't very intuitive for me).

Thanks, hope you can help!
