Wikipedia versus mass media

I think a Wikipedia article chosen at random is more accurate than a mass media report chosen at random. Care to take up the challenge? WAS 4.250 03:31, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

A few words from an uninvolved administrator

This site is run almost entirely by volunteers, most of whom would rather spend their time improving articles than correcting vandalized pages. Although the edits you performed may seem minor, this sort of action is like throwing litter from a car window: one toss gives the wrong impression to the next driver, who sets a bad precedent for the one who follows. Some civic-minded volunteers spend a lot of time cleaning up that trash because we care about this stretch of the information superhighway.

As a journalist the public trusts you to research your stories and present fair and accurate reporting. Some of Wikipedia's volunteers - myself included - have given our contact information to the Wikimedia Foundation to facilitate the background research for reporters such as yourself. I would gladly have explained the concept Wikipedia calls a breaching experiment as well as the applicable policies WP:POINT, WP:VANDAL, and WP:OWN. The central problem with a news report that performs a breaching experiment in ignorance of those policies is that it conveys the impression those policies do not exist. Vandalism spikes in the days that immediately follow and our hardworking volunteers get frustrated.
