Notes edit

As always, feel free to revert my copyediting. - Dank (push to talk)

  • There are two problems so far. VE can't easily handle files this big; it has crashed Firefox twice, losing my edits. So I'm changing to the wikitext editor, which is slightly slower going (for me). Also, I have a new policy that I only copyedit an article once ... so if I do it here, and then there are significant changes, I won't be able to offer a copyedit and support at FAC. Should I continue? - Dank (push to talk) 21:25, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • In general, there are more quotation marks (with assorted meanings) than FAC reviewers like to see. I won't comment on each of them. - Dank (push to talk) 23:45, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Okay, I got down to Rural credit and land-grabbing. I'm sorry, I can't make this work: VE crashes, but it's slow-going with the wiki-editor ... when I find something I want to change, it takes me a while to find it in the editing screen, amid all the notes and references. And anyway, I'd like to be able to offer you a support at FAC when I'm finished. - Dank (push to talk) 23:51, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Many thanks for your input/help! I think it's best to stop now. I plan to send it thru MILHIST A review first then try FAC. There may be many changes. Thanks again!  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 01:41, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
    • Great, happy to help. - Dank (push to talk) 01:53, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
    • What I've seen so far is very good btw, clearer and more gripping than what we usually get. - Dank (push to talk) 12:02, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Photos edit

It seems odd to display photos from 1946 and 1912. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:39, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

The older photos (one from 1912) are OK because technology did not change. I have seen a source to that effect and considered adding it (I suppose I could add it in the "agricultural productivity" section). I will try to find it, and if anyone in MILHIST A-review or FAC forces me to, I'll add it.... The 1946 image is a bit iffier, because it's from another significant event (either Direct Action Day or some other riot before the Partition of India)... but... there aren't any other photos.. that I can find... and it is a Calcutta riot. I dunno. I'm gonna try and see....thanks.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 07:46, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Other issues edit

In the table "Land alienation in Bengal ...", what do the numbers represent? Clarityfiend (talk) 07:23, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

In the Rice section, I moved a quote to the first sentence, but I don't know if the source is for it or for "75 and 85% of daily food consumption" or both.

Finally, note the clarification needed in the Famine, disease, and the death toll section. Probably just needs to have "high" deleted. Clarityfiend (talk) 08:21, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

All three fixed (probably). Thanks!  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 09:55, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Frequency of quotes and summation edit

I recall you saying another editor complaining about the number of direct quotes. I have to agree in part. There are some that don't really add anything simply by being quotes and can easily be paraphrased (and without requiring twisting to work grammatically): e.g. "a large proportion of the population [continually led] a quasi-famine existence", "[obtain] the land and occupancy rights of the [ryot] through both legal and coercive means".

Other than that, I'm done, except for double-checking to see if I inadvertently changed any direct quotes (it was a bit hard to see through all the notation and templates). Clarityfiend (talk) 10:33, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

One minor detail: Is Aakaaler Sandhane a short story or a novel (quotes or italics)? Clarityfiend (talk) 10:39, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't know, actually. That bit is one of the extremely few bits of legacy text from the current mainspace article. It is unreferenced. I may delete the short story but leave the movie... probably will.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 10:51, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

You're missing an end quote for "after a century free from war and famine ...", probably after "for his family", but possibly after "during the famine]". Clarityfiend (talk) 10:55, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

There's a unpaired quote at "The fungus Cochliobolus miyabeanus ... Clarityfiend (talk) 11:07, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • It might be better if I waited 'til you're done to fix it. After I fixed that one (above), I thought "Ooops maybe I had an edit conflict with Clarityfiend.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 11:08, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'm done. I found and corrected some punctuation issues in my quote checking. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:34, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
