Duplication of article edit

Thank you for your contributions to the article Hyla arborea. However, we already have an article on this subject at European tree frog, and it is not helpful for information to be duplicated or fragmented over several articles, which makes it difficult for editors to maintain the articles, and difficult for users, since they may look in one place and miss information in another. That is one of the reasons why we have redirects. You are, of course, welcome to add information to European tree frog, but Hyla arborea has been restored as a redirect. JBW, I can see how it appears to be duplicated, but the reason that I created a new page instead of adding to the current one, European tree frog, was because that page is referring to the common name and includes 4 species within that common name. Therefore, I created a new link for Hyla arborea, like the other species that were listed on that page. The information that I added was only specifically about the species Hyla arborea. Thank you for your time reviewing my page. Leighlynn89 (talk) 03:07, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry that I didn't reply before. I had read your message, and didn't think I had anything to add, but perhaps it would have been more helpful to you if I had explicitly said so. I understand what you say. I am not sure whether it is better to have two separate articles or not, and I will leave it to you. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:29, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

J., I am writing this for a class, so I may discuss it a little bit more with my professor because I am not sure if the article is incorrect in including the other 3 species within European tree frog. If that is the case, it would be best to have only one page. Either way, would you be able to restore the Hyla arborea page so I can have access to my edits, and I can add them to and edit the current european tree frog page if I decide that is the best route to go? Thanks. Leighlynn89 (talk) 10:40, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have restored your page, and "userfied" it at User:Leighlynn89/Hyla arborea. This is a temporary measure to give you a chance to work on it, not a long term way of avoiding deletion. I should eventually either be moved back out as a an article or else deleted. At present you will not be able to move it back to Hyla arborea, as there is a redirect there, which prevents anyone other than an administrator from moving another page there. If and when it is ready to move, let me know. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:55, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I talked with my professor today, and he recommends that I add to the current European tree frog page, but delete the other 3 species that are mentioned on that page, since that information does not seem to be very accurate. Also, I think it would be beneficial and more consistent with other Wikipedia pages if the name of the article was changed to Hyla arborea and european tree frog was the redirect, since it is the common name. Would I be able to do that or would you need to do that? Thanks again for your help. Leighlynn89 (talk) 00:25, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Once again, you would be able to do it if there weren't already a page with the same name. (At present that page is just a redirect.) I could rename it for you, or I could delete the redirect and then you could move it. If you just want it moved and don't care how it's done it would be a little quicker for me to do it, but if you want to gain experience of how to do things on Wikipedia, and would like to do it yourself, I could just delete the redirect and let you do the renaming. Let me know when you think the article is ready to rename. (Actually, there is another method of doing this, which is to tag the redirect page as needing to be deleted by an administrator to make way for a page move. I suggest asking me to deal with it though, because I already know the background to the request, unlike some other admin who might happen to come along. If you are interested, though, the way to do this is to put {{db-move|page to be moved|reason}} on the top of the page you want to move to.) JamesBWatson (talk) 08:47, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
