Humanities desk

thanks for your help on the humanities desk, and good on you for your contribs in general, but I could have done without the slight snippiness implicit in: 'A quick Google search revealed' (I didn't know the term 'forms of religious address' to google it, that's why i turned to the WP desks); and the brusqueness of 'Nothing. 'Your Eminence' counts as an address. Anyway, surely he would not have been addressed in English?' - no big deal, just the unnecessarily superior tone got under my skin a little. The Wikipedia:Etiquette article does point out "Keep in mind that raw text is ambiguous and often seems ruder than the same words coming from a person standing in front of you.". It also indicates that "Be careful of the words you choose – what you intended might not be what others perceive, and what you read might not be what the author intended.". I was simply trying to provide you with some good information sources without 'a plate of accompanying waffle', so to speak, give a description of the actions I had taken so that someone else could follow them themselves and pose a further question that you might have wanted to consider. If you consider mentioning a game of extensive discussion and of some controversy in Wikipedia in a topic on what compromises a game in a tongue-in-cheek way, then yes, I am a terrible, terrible troll and you should probably bring me to the attention of an admin.

In the event that I had actually added the comment in an attempt to troll then you should have considered the following paragraph from the article on trolling to which you referred. "When you try to decide if someone is a troll, strive to assume they are not. Explain errors politely and reasonably; point them towards policies, the manual of style and relevant past discussions. Don't conclude they are a troll until they have shown complete inability or unwillingness to listen to reason or to moderate their position based upon the input of others. Even in that case, it is likely better to remain silent and let others conclude the obvious instead of calling someone a troll and creating even more mayhem. It is better to humor a troll for too long than to drive away a sincere but misguided user. Remember and apply the principles laid out at Wikipedia:Don't bite the newcomers." As you can see from the sections highlighted in bold you failed to explain why my comment was trolling, you concluded I was a troll as indicated in your edit comment, you failed to remain silent and instead jumped to conclusions and implied I was a troll, again in your edit comment. Niceness on the Reference Desk

Although we don't do people's homework for them, it is no bad thing to - instead of brusquely telling them to "do your own homework" - point them in the right direction to begin their research. If you are unable to help in that way, perhaps not replying would be better. Neil ム 15:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Make an effort to show that you have tried solving it first. I just feel we are encouraging laziness and that the humanities desk is the worst for it. The very fact that you do answer it for them is ironically not helping them. On a side note however - I am terribly nice in general. Perhaps the 'Before asking a question' section at the top should be changed to: Do your own homework. The reference desk will not give you answers for your homework, although we will try to help you out if there is a specific part of your homework you do not understand. Make an effort to show that you have tried solving it first. However, if you cannot provide proof of this or have simply copied the question to Wikipedia we will help you anyway. Pointing them in the right direction is never a wrong thing to do. If you think it encourages laziness, perhaps you should sit on your hands and leave it for someone else to respond to. I do point in the right direction if there is indication of effort on their behalf and even sometimes without. I simply think the blatant copy and pastes should not be spoonfed - it's clearly laid out at the top of the page. And as for the sarcasm, yes and sorry; I will point out however that it is accurate. Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Why thank you. I am looking into a little template I can use instead of all the cutting and pasting that I currently do, I'll ask opinion on the RD discussion before I implement anything. We should perhaps consider a little page somewhere with guidelines in reference to medical questions for the questionees who may be as unclear as some of us were. (How did I miss that page...) Homework questions at the Desk

Hi—I'm a bit concerned about this edit you made, that removed a (possible) homework question from the Science Ref Desk.

Generally, we don't remove those questions, we just remind the person who posted it that the Ref Desk isn't in the business of providing homework solutions. If appropriate, you can also use the {{Dyoh}} template. It can also be helpful to leave suggestions about Wikipedia articles (or other websites) where they might be able to find information that might aid them in solving their problem or answering their question.

It's seen as rather BITEy to just excise the question and leave boldfaced policy quotes in their place. We don't come down on the homework questions quite as hard or as fast because a) there isn't nearly the same risk of harm to the poster or Wikipedia, and b) it's often possible to provide some guidance without doing the person's homework. If you're not sure about what types of questions are supposed to be flat-out removed from the Desk ( you might want to reread WP:RD/G) please ask first; shooting relatively harmless questions on sight tends to kick over the anthill on the talk page. I deleted it as it was a crosspost, same question was asked on the Computing desk here, as for edit summaries, I agree, I'll try harder in future, it's just laziness as you don't really need them the majority of the time on the reference desk and I got into a bad habit.
