Hello, you're hard to reach..

Hi Lady (Marion?)

My name is Daniel Poirier. Approximately 5 hours ago, the pizza in my oven burned setting the smoke alarm while I was practicing the Theme For Braveheart. I was practicing because the batteries in my iPad died while freezing in the ice hut since I ran out of kerosene in the portable heater in there. And no I didn't catch any fish, which is why I came back in the house, waiting to communicate with you.

)

Anyway, I really need to talk to you concerning your deleting my article " DNCH" in wikipedia. I need to know what it is that I must do in order to repost it.

Not that I'm in a hurry you see, it's just that I have many other things to attend to, and would like to finalize this one matter. Perhaps you could assist me even, should it convenience you?

I am looking forward to your reply on this. In the meantime I must tend to the moderate burns on my fingertips, tongue tip and lip.

Thank you so much.

See WP:REFUND#Dnch and following two entries. JohnCD (talk) 10:32, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Daniel, first of all, no, I'm not really all that hard to reach - this is the appropriate place to contact me, and I am replying - I am unable to be on Wikipedia 24 hours a day. Now, as to DNCH, what is necessary is for you to show that it meets Wikipedia's notability requirements. That is, there must be coverage of the company in reliable, secondary sources. Have, for instance, newspapers written any articles about the company? Has it won any major awards? Is there anything published about it (other than just a listing in a directory)? You should also be aware of the conflict of interest guideline - Wikipedia articles must be written with a neutral point-of-view, and that can be difficult for a company owner to do. If you have any further questions for me, please feel free to post them here. LadyofShalott 18:58, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
JohnCD, thanks for the link to the refund page and section. LadyofShalott 18:58, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Fixed the COI link for you, it was broken. :) l'aquatique[talk] 22:34, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

We_Reach_For_Tonight

I see you've just deleted this new article. I was just in the process of reporting it myself. Am I imagining things, or had the article actually been created with built-in 'delete' and 'hold on' templates? I'd not seen this before, and wondered if this was a whole new trick, or just a bug - or possibly a figment of my imagination? Perhaps I've just not been about long enough to have seen this one, but it looked like a well-designed attempt to get round the system. AndyTheGrump (talk) 03:22, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Yep, it had already been speedily deleted, and they just reposted the entire last version before the previous deletion... thereby ensuring the second deletion took place that much faster. LadyofShalott 03:26, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks--I knew you'd follow up by proofreading the sloppy drivel I wrote. Hey, in regards to this--I thought the MoS told us not to wikilink in quotations? Drmies (talk) 03:51, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

It's a great find. As for the MOS, really? I'll have to go look for that rule - if you are correct, it's one that has slipped by me until now. (Have you read that NYTimes article? It says something about Wikipedia culture not liking rules!?) LadyofShalott 03:55, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
...And you are right. Well, I guess I'll stop doing that. Feel free to remove the link if you want. LadyofShalott 03:57, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Wow, I'm right...can I tell my wife? Hey, where's the link (for future reference)? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 04:13, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Hey, that article is spot-on. Look at me, working on these French lesbian writers, who are woefully underrepresented, when there's a million bytes per Pokemon character or videogame. Have you ever looked at Category:Monster trucks? Drmies (talk) 04:15, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Sure, tell your wife, but does she argue with you about WP rules? ;-) Wikipedia:MOS#Linking is what you seek. I actually burst out laughing when I read your question - no, I had never even considered looking at that category before, but I see now that there are 42 articles in just that top category, let alone its subcats. I wish I had a good explanation for the disparity here, but I don't. I posted a link to that article on a popular social networking site, and some of my friends there are suggesting that it's that women are too busy with other things - but as there are many women spending lots of time on that very site, clearly choices are being made about how to spend time online - choices that don't seem to include Wikipedia as frequently as certain other sites. LadyofShalott 04:24, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
No, I just need to convince her that I'm not always wrong just because I don't have a ponka, haha. Yes, monster trucks--I looked at a whole bunch of those articles early on in my career. It was something to do. Listen, I think we have a division of labor here (at least in this house!): I got WP, she got Facebook. We can't delete either one of them (imagine that AfD discussion). So, can we merge the two? and get along in glorious harmony? Drmies (talk) 04:46, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I see no reason they can't get along. You may have guessed that the "popular social networking site" to which I referred is Facebook. A merger though? I guess that would pretty much invalidate the A7 speedy deletion criterion... just for starters. LadyofShalott 04:53, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh, imagine going through Facebook with an A7-person stamp in hand! Drmies (talk) 05:16, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Did I make a mistake?

I put a notice to please vote at a Wikiproject to which the article belonged. I was told that this is the appropriate place to request votes, though I was told to be neutral and should not express a POV as to how to vote. Did I make a mistake? PPdd (talk) 02:34, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

It is reasonable to post a link to the WikiProject; it is also good form to post a note at the discussion saying that you did so. (There might be an expectation that members of the project would tend vote in a block (true or not), and it's good to be completely open about how a discussion has been publicised.) LadyofShalott 02:50, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I will do so in the future. (Did I use talkback correctly?) PPdd (talk) 02:54, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
There's no need to use talkback on my page when you are replying here - I get notified if you post here. It's just a courtesy you can use if you reoly on your page and are not sure if the other person is watching it. :) LadyofShalott 02:58, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi Lady of Shalott! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:36, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Thank you everyone who participated in the January Collaboration, it was quite a success with 5 new C class articles, 3 stub kills and several articles were removed from our backlogs. In support of the Great Backlog Drive, the WikiProject Novels Collaboration for February is going to help remove backlog candidates in the backlogs related to WikiProject Novels. Please join us, and help us wikify, reference, clean up plot sections and generally improve Novels content, Sadads (talk) 22:32, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Bacon jam?

Hey Lady, can you please have a look at Bacon jam and the associated Skillet Street Food? The latter was copied and pasted form the former--is that OK, GFDL-wise? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 04:00, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

I think it's fine. I can't name the policy right off, but I've seen other articles split before. If you want, I'll try to hunt down the exact policy that says it's ok. LadyofShalott 02:17, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
But it doesn't preserve the history, does it? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:57, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, the history is still there; it's just you have to go to the original article history to get it. Wikipedia:Splitting is the relevant page. (If Bacon jam were to be deleted, but Skillet Street Food kept, there would be a loss of history that would be a problem.) LadyofShalott 23:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you much. I've added an edit summary according to the procedure on Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure. Drmies (talk) 18:45, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

The Rolleston Committee, strange!

Hi, can you please explain why I've created this page called The Rolleston Committee to reference from another page but I can't seem to find it (The Rolleston Committee page that is).
If that makes any sense?
Is it something to due the catpitalisation? The article is actually titled the Rolleston committee, but I can't see a way to change it to Rolleston Committee, surely searches arn't case sensitive anyway?

Probably I've done something very stupid :-(2829VC (talk) 18:12, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

The problem was that you left the 't' out of Rolleston in the title. I've moved your article to Rolleston Committee now. (The way I found it for you was to go to your user page, and then click "User contributions" - you can always click "my contributions" at the top of the screen to see what you've done.) LadyofShalott 19:08, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much Mr Stupid says:-) I must have pondered over this for an hour or more!2829VC (talk) 19:58, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Help!, I've made a terrible mistake, I think, I had thought stuff in my user page was hidden, but it appears to be publicly visible from outside Wikipedia. Can you please hide it for me, or show me how to hide it somehwere, so I can work on it ib private, thanks2829VC (talk)
False alarm, I think, user page is hidden from outside, whew!2829VC (talk) 04:52, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Actually, your first assessment was correct. There is no such thing as a completely hidden page on Wikipedia. Now, there may be no links to a given page, but anyone can find any page and both look at and edit it. Most folks don't go looking for things in people's sandboxes, and don't do anything to them if they find them, but they can. (Things in people's sandboxes are not indexed by, e.g., Google - so you you are working on an article on Foo in your sandbox and someone searches Google for Foo, they will not find your draft.) LadyofShalott 05:37, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, relief! I read read it almost immediately you posted it. Ok then. Re Cure. Can you advise me please etc. Some of the people involved may still be alive, I can refer to a copy of the original document where the names are replaced by a, b, c etc. In my 'stub' on Cure, I can then refer to a, b and c. Is this suitable? I can give you a link to the original documrnt if you would like to see it, but not here. Thank you for any help. I really don't want to publish the Cure 'stub' and have it immediately removed2829 VC 08:39, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Antisexualism deletion discussion

That's OK -- the Wikicode bullted list structure ("*", "**" etc.) is OK for strictly structured and formatted data, or for simple one-level lists of "oppose" and "support" comments, but due to certain limitations it's not really suitable for a general threaded (indented) discussion. For this reason I try to get rid of the "*"s when an indented discussion develops, but this can give rise to disaligned displays in some browsers... AnonMoos (talk) 23:31, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Hey Aleta- a serious copyright issue here

Do you recall that I like to add photos and I upload for musician's articles? I was looking at the various individual members of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and just bumped into an article which is the biography of Greg Rzab. The entire article word-for-word appears to plagiarism from one source: GREG RZAB - John Mayall Website. I think the whole article is in serious need of the attention of the Admin. Would you mind reading the stub and the reference? Thanka— Preceding unsigned comment added by Leahtwosaints (talkcontribs)

Done I've deleted it. The thing to do in the future if you find something like that is to tag the article {{db-g12}}. That's the speedy deletion tag for blatant copyright violations. LadyofShalott 00:22, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Help, please?

Hello LadyofShalott, Dr Aaij has come out of semi-retirement and would like to ask you a question. Can you have a look at Me and Juliet, please, and at Talk:Me and Juliet/GA1? I am not sure if the picture in the infobox, which is supposed to be used only to illustrate an article on the audio recording, is kosher--it's illustrating an article on the actual musical. Thank you for your assistance! Dr Aaij (talk) 04:57, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

I do not feel like an expert on this area of Wikipedia at all. That being said, there is a section of the article specifically about the recording. I think that should validate use of that image in the article. LadyofShalott 05:17, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, Lady. It's been a pleasure! ;) Dr Aaij (talk) 13:40, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Yeah. That was completely messed up. I think it's all fixed now. I looked in the editor's contributions, but I didn't see that the original image had been deleted from any articles. (I did notice that Jose has had issues with image copyright problems previously, with a mass deletion of uploaded files...) LadyofShalott 01:46, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Having noted a post of yours at Wikiproject archaeology, I'm wondering if you are at all interested in this - it's a shame, we have a new editor with expertise being driven off by an established editor who should know better. Dougweller (talk) 09:11, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Bacon Challenge 2011 coming to a close

Dear ever-so-valiant Bacon Challenge 2011 participant:

Almost a year ago, the Bacon Challenge 2011 kicked off for the third year in a row with the annual mission of expanding and bettering Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. We are almost at the end of this year's Bacon Challenge, which ends on March 1st. I am pleased to say that, during this time period, Bacon Challenge participants have done a great job. Ten new pages have been created. Two articles have been granted the status of being good articles. Over one hundred reliable sources have been placed into articles, and over 7,500 words have been added. Six articles have been featured on Wikipedia's main page under the "Did you know..." section. These are all excellent results.

The Bacon WikiCup has also been exciting to watch. Contributors have been racking up more and more points as the deadline approaches. As I post this message,   Worm That Turned is in the lead, with   Cirt in second, and   Acather96 in third.   Cirt currently has created the most new pages, while   Worm That Turned has done the most work in expanding articles and achieving DYKs.   Acather96 has done the most work with image uploads. Remember, while the Bacon Challenge is ending in just a few days, it's not too late to make any last-minute contributions to get a few more Bacon WikiCup points. Everyone who contributes at least something will earn a virtual commemorative medal, so if you haven't contributed anything bacon-related to Wikipedia, now's your chance. Contributions can be submitted up until the end of March 7th, but only for contributions that were done before the beginning of March. The extra week is provided for participants to report any last-minute contributions, and to allow for any contributions that require a timely process (such as a good article or DYK nomination) to go through. At the end of the event, scores for the Bacon WikiCup will be completed and re-checked, and prizes will be distributed. Thanks and good luck! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:12, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Let's troubleshoot your RefToolbar problem

Hey LadyofShalott, sorry to hear about you troubles with RefToolbar. I would love to help you troubleshoot this problem as it is likely that if you are experiencing it, others are as well. First off, I would like for you to temporarily turn off all your user scripts in your skin JS page. Next disable all of your gadgets. Then turn on "Enable enhanced editing toolbar" and "Enable dialogs for inserting links, tables and more" under editing preferences. Go to edit an article and do a hard refresh (shift-refresh on most browsers). Record whether or not refToolbar shows up or not (it should add a "Cite" dropdown in the toolbar). Next turn off "Enable dialogs for inserting links, tables and more". Repeat the shift-refresh on the edit page and record if refToolbar shows up or not. Next turn off "Enable enhanced editing toolbar". Repeat the shift-refresh on the edit page and record if refToolbar shows up or not (it should appear as a square "Cite" button in the toolbar). Then post the results here, and I'll follow-up with you. Kaldari (talk) 23:10, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Kaldari, and thank you so much for your offer of help. Just now, without having done anything since posting the other day, I tried it, and did get the cite button I am used to (but on the left not the right where it has been - that, of course, is inconsequential). I am not currently at home where I do the majority of my editing, and with a different setup. I'll try it again there when I'm able and see if it works there, or if I need to the troubleshooting you've outlined above. Thank you again! LadyofShalott 15:24, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm... this must be a browser issue, I'm thinking. When I made the above comments, I was on a machine using Firefox. I'm now using AOL (which IE ultimately), and following all of your instructions above, nothing gives me a cite button or dropdown or anything. LadyofShalott 05:35, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I think the cache wasn't really getting bypassed. I shut down the browser and used an Internet Cleanup utility to clear the cache, and now I have the {{}} button showing. LadyofShalott 05:56, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, Internet Explorer really hates letting go of its cached files for some reason. I've had similar problems with it in the past. Kaldari (talk) 18:13, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Your talk page edits

As long as there's an obligatory talk page, people will continue to post lectures on why they are right and I am wrong. I don't have the patience for that. If someone doesn't like an edit, they should just revert it without feeling the need to rub my nose in it. You've taken it upon yourself to protect the world from any attempt on my part to distance myself from this. I think you consider it altruistic. I find it kind of pushy and a little bit like stalking. Each editing policy article begins with: "It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply." The very concept of a Wikipedia policy leaves room for flexibility. My talk page or lack thereof does threaten the foundations of Wikipedia. You could just leave it alone. Could you please explain to me why you feel it is necessary that you personally police my talk page? --MoonLichen (talk) 06:28, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, occasional exceptions do apply - for instance, your current talk page redirect is merely silly, and I feel no compunction to do anything about it. Heh. I don't know who that might be. I don't use the indef tool all that much, but there's certainly more than one candidate for being ticked with me. It's obviously a sockpuppet, but I don't know of whom. </shrug> LadyofShalott 03:33, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

I notice that you marked N salazar (talk · contribs) as a "suspected" sockpuppet of PoliticianTexas (talk · contribs) rather than "confirmed", while the checkuser marked him "confirmed". Which is correct? It makes a difference because PoliticianTexas is community-banned and "Edits by banned editors or on their behalf may be reverted without question (exceptions), and any pages that have been created by banned editors where they are the sole contributor may be speedily deleted under CSD#G5." (see WP:BANBLOCKDIFF). Same question for SteveoJ (talk · contribs) and Johnj stevenson (talk · contribs). Thanks. --69.97.105.178 (talk) 11:01, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

You can double check with the checkuser. However, because PT and all previously verified sockpuppet accounts were stale, it was not possible to confirm that those other accounts were PT, though they were socks of one another. Behavioural evidence says that it is PT. I think the logic extends to N Salazar. LadyofShalott 23:12, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

PoliticianTexas again

Hi LadyofShalott, exercise caution when reverting edits by DinNM. I double checked several of these edits that showed up on my watchlist and discovered that they were valid. I know that editor has been known to cause problems, but he also makes contributions. Careful not to throw the wheat out and with the chaff. Greg Comlish (talk) 15:48, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

I understand your point. He is a banned user though, and edits of banned users are generally reverted on sight. LadyofShalott 19:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
If you wish to check their validity and restore selected correct edits, that is your prerogative, of course. LadyofShalott 19:36, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
None of the edits from that user that I've seen indicated any vandalism. Were there any edits that this user made that concerned you? Greg Comlish (talk) 01:45, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
He did upload two copyrighted images. I think that repeated image violations are what got him banned in the first place. LadyofShalott 01:51, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
If I may interject here, any edits of the banned user that another editor would like to take responsibility for can be readded. I would advise Greg to be very careful when doing so however. Many of the previous edits made by this banned editor were falsely sourced. In essence they looked good, but didn't stand up. If you are willing to take that step and verify each one, by all means go right ahead. Having dealt with this banned editor before however, I will revert their edits on sight. Dayewalker (talk) 05:10, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
Indeed, and this edit by CommonsDelinker of yet another copyright violation underscores the need for care. Please, if you are going to defend and take responsibility for edits of PT's neverending sock drawer, make certain that the edits are really valid - that sources say what they are claimed to say and licenses are correct. Don't assume that just because it looks ok at first glance that it really is. PT has a long history of problematic editing. LadyofShalott 15:46, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Nice to meet you! Thanks for contributing to the talk page of my article Digitalis thapsi. Well, I hope you're a member of WikiProject Plants. I'll love it if you help me occasionally when I ask you. Currently I am trying my best to remove redlinks and create new and informative articles. I hope yo help me. Thanks,--Sainsf<^> (talk) 05:53, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome, and I'll be glad to help you with what I can. I have put together a few basic articles on some plant species, but I am by no means an expert. That's a nice start you've made on the D. thapsis page! LadyofShalott 05:59, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Hey Lady!

Did you see Eleanor Duckett? Fascinating stuff! The spirit wasn't moving me, but by chance I had her Wandering Saints on my desk. Who knew she was interesting? Wikipedia is really a lot of fun. Plus, I just filed taxes--wanna blow the money on a night out in Hotlanta? Drmies (talk) 16:14, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I had not seen that one - interesting! Hey, meeting up in Atlanta would be cool. LadyofShalott 16:29, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
Or we could meet in the St. Casimir Roman Catholic Parish in Yonkers--that is, unless some anti-Catholic abusive administrator dictatorially removes it. And I did note that you have chosen Satan's side there, but don't worry, I'll be praying for you.

One of the sources for the Duckett article is an entire book on women medievalists: a treasure trove. Any time I have a minute (well, an hour or so; these biographies tend to take a long time) I'm churning one out. Where would WP be without Google Books? Drmies (talk) 16:47, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Not sure if you still watch this article, but I see through the edit history that you were the main one fixing things/reverting vandalism on the Heterosexualization article for most of its existence. Thus, I figured you might want to weigh in on this discussion:Talk:Heterosexualization#Not only an LGBT issue. Before any major decisions are made about the article's future. fake article

Hey Lady, do you have any suggestions for User talk:Cactoblastoff? I welcomed them and explained a few things (about fake articles, user space, etc), but they removed my note without comment or edit summary (I really dislike that). I don't want to come right back and slap FAKEARTICLE on it and send it on to MfD, but isn't that the proper procedure? BTW, Eric Litwin is to lead the parade at the Decatur Book Festival. Be there or be square. Squank you, Drmies (talk) 17:15, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Well, they moved the entire thing to article space (having used their talk page as a sandbox), so I guess that's the end of it. Thanks, and have a nice weekend, Drmies (talk) 17:57, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
    • Oh, I saw what you wrote. To plug myself a bit: that discography is mostly my work; help came from Dabomb in the form of hyphens and such. • The content is still there, which in itself is contrary to Wikilicencing, as there is no attribution to previous authors. Also, having an article make up the contents of your talk page is not advisable, for a number of reasons...--kelapstick(bainuu) 04:35, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Drmies and My Lady: Here's another Newbery writer. The facts are there but it could use a good copyedit and there's very little on her personal life (more is out there on her family). Perhaps you could check your offline sources and help copyedit? It's also listed at DYK. BarkingMoon (talk) 01:11, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

I've done a little copyediting; it needs more still. As for sources, I'm coming up with a whole lot of nothing (well, I got quite a number of results; they just did not pertain whatsoever to the subject of interest). LadyofShalott 01:43, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Your opinion on this article

I read some of the random comments in your page. since "We should strive to keep articles from being biased.", could you take a look at this one Morphological computation (robotics)? I have some comment sin the discussion page but is not very active. Thanks. Kakila (talk) 14:05, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, this is not a topic I know anything about. That being said, the article really needs more sources to back up the claims it makes. Also, some sections, e.g. the one on cognitive science, seem rather out-of-place in this article. The relationship to the main subject needs to be made clearer. LadyofShalott 16:34, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Sure, I agree. Now, as you can see, the references are all from the same group, therefore I think it is biased. Also, is based on research and I see no reason why to keep it in a encyclopedia. Even more, being part of the area, the view described there is not shared, and the ones who do not share it are waiting to have more consistent and strong results (like the groups at Graz and Ghent). In conclusion, we do not know what we are talking about. Shouldn't the article be deleted or something? Do you think the warnings are enough? It was, apparently proposed for deletion but somebody rescued it. From my point of view I see it adding noise and biasing the view of non-experts or people outside the field. Thanks Kakila (talk) 20:57, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Be a somniac

Read me, grasshopper.

Look, drop the five-volume romantic science-fiction dragonslaying epics and pick up a copy of War and Peace. Better yet, grab any Henry James novel: I guarantee you you'll be out before you finish the obligatory preface. Sweet dreams, Drmies (talk) 01:23, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

  • And just take your big leaps alright, without rubbing it in. Now you know how I write articles. ;) PS: thanks. T-ball practice was hell, dinner afterward was worse. I have a theory about cocktails now.Drmies (talk) 01:25, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. Something's gotta give here... Anyway, my draft is coming along. I'm still avoiding the biographical bit, but take a look at my progress! Sorry about the cruddy evening - I hope you got that cocktail! LadyofShalott 01:28, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Speaking of things to read... I hadn't mentioned that I finished reading The Green Child the other day. That's an interesting little book. It's sort of odd, but I liked it. The whole political thing in South America juxtaposed against the otherworld society of the green people... I'm still not quite sure what to make of all that. The fascination with minerals appealed to me, as I totally relate to that (well, maybe not quite to the metaphysical extent of them, but...) I did have one geological nit to pic - the reference to the perfect crystallinity of obsidian is totally bogus; as a glass, obsidian is completely non-crystalline. Oh well, I did say it was a nit I had to pick. LadyofShalott 01:44, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't think Malleus cared for the South-American part at all. I did, in a couple of ways, since I used to read Latin-American epics, and not too long ago I read this amazing--OK, title escapes me now, I'll get back to you--novella set on the high plains of Argentina and Chili. Drmies (talk) 02:14, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Have you read Lost City Radio by Daniel Alarcon? I highly recommend it. (The stub of an article isn't very good. I have the impression the book was very well received in the critical echelons.) Back on topic, I did think the SA portion of TGC went on a bit too long in proportion to the rest of it. LadyofShalott 02:19, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
And the prize for worst article for best book goes to...are you ready...2666 (novel). That book is the best I've read in years. Drmies (talk) 03:18, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Members' input needed at WikiProject Women's History

Hello. I'm writing to you as your name is listed on the members page for WikiProject Women's History. In recent discussions at the project, most notably here, several members have indicated that the scope of the project may need to be more clearly defined and communicated. I have set up a workshop page for this, but it obviously needs as wide a participation as possible to achieve genuine consensus and to allow the project to move forward. You'll find the workshop here.

If you no longer consider yourself an active member of the project, it would help if you could indicate this on the members' page. This will allow us to better gauge how much people-power we actually have. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 04:34, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Boot camp

Hey Lady, I'm practicing--see Wikipedia:New admin school/Deleting. Thing is, first of all, all those training pages seem to refer to a layout without some of the fancy pull-down menus, so not everything is in the same place on my screen as in the instructions. Second, in this case I can't delete the practice page (Wikipedia talk:New admin school/Deleting) since it has more than 5,000 edits (earlier today I read about deleting the main page--this is related, I understand now). How is a new admin supposed to practice deletion? Can I delete something of yours, for the hell of it?? Drmies (talk) 18:58, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for nominating me and guiding me through the process. Thanks also for helping me out the last few years--Mandasax can tell you (well, I can too now) on how many pages you have helped me out. You've made me a better editor, and if I'll be a decent admin it will be in no small part to you. Don't let this get to your head, but you're a great editor and you truly exemplify the cooperative spirit of the project. Now I'm going to get out of here, before I really tear up. Looks reasonable to me. I did remove Lullus; it doesn't make sense to categorize one person under another. Have you compared it to any other saint cats to see it they look comparable? (Sorry for the delayed reply. I didn't have much WP time over the weekend.) LadyofShalott 17:33, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Franklin House (Athens, Georgia)

Almost 2,500 characters...another sentence or two and you have a DYK waiting to happen. Can you come up with a hook? Drmies (talk) 19:49, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

It probably won't be until this evening that I can do it, but I'll try to add some detail and come up with a good hook if you want to nominate it. LadyofShalott 20:01, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Also, thanks for the help with it! LadyofShalott 20:03, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
No, thank you for not chastising me for tracking your edits, haha. But I think by now I've thoroughly mined what Google Books has to offer. I left you a question in one of the edit summaries. Also, have you heard from Favonian? I'm ready. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 20:10, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Hah, we seem to do that to each other, so no worries! I just checked my email, and I've had nothing from Favonian as of yet. Should I approach him, or just go ahead? LadyofShalott 20:26, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I'll see tomorrow if I can get that page you asked about in the edit summary. There's some fun stuff in those old newspapers. LadyofShalott 02:21, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
  • DYK... that the Franklin House built on a lot once owned by the University of Georgia, has held a hotel, a hardware company, and now leases office space to UGA?
  • How's that for a possible hook? LadyofShalott 00:42, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Suggest changing UGA to "the university", keeps abbreviations out of the hook, still under 200 characters.--kelapstick(bainuu) 03:10, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's probably better. LadyofShalott 03:12, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
That's great. Yes, I figured that UGA would return to the lead like a dog to its vomit. Thanks for the help K! Drmies (talk) 03:27, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeeeeucccckkkk! LadyofShalott 03:32, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I was going to leave you a joke in an edit summary, but that's not the best place for an offensive joke: If a couple from Georgia get divorced in Alabama, are they still brother and sister? Drmies (talk) 03:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
lol that's just wrong, Drmies, wrong. LadyofShalott 03:39, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

OK, so that (tweaking the grammar a bit) would be:

  • DYK... that the Franklin House, built on a lot once owned by the University of Georgia, has held a hotel and a hardware company, and now leases office space to the university?
Do we have all of those things cited properly? I'm too tired to figure it out at the moment. LadyofShalott 03:39, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

BTW, while I've come up with a hook, if you want to nominate it for DYK, that's your bailwick. I was going to say that the rules of DYK are too arcane for me, but that's not quite accurate - it's just not the kind of arcana I go for. LadyofShalott 03:43, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

  • WELL! Here's the DYK expert, who (see the first comment in this section) is CLEARLY a MORON! I wonder how long I've been thinking that 2,500 was the minimum. Sheesh. Oh, Lady, it's all taken care of. You can complain as much as you like about arcanity, but it's clear you can't be bothered to review another article. Sometimes you get lucky and it's easy! Drmies (talk) 03:57, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Oh, whoops. I wonder at what point in the process we hit 1500? Whatever... I'm glad to have played a bit with the newspaper archives. Oh, as far as that goes... you want to look back in the edit summaries, and go to just before I took out that one link to the newspaper? Could you see if the link actually works for you? I'm thinking you need to have GALILEO access, but I'm not entirely sure. If you tell me otherwise, then I'll go back and recreate the links for the articles I referenced. LadyofShalott 04:10, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Hmm. I did see that at the time but paid no attention to it. Yes, the link was weird--because there was a question mark in the URL, no doubt. I've had that with German and Dutch newspaper URLs, which sometimes have square brackets in them. A year or more ago some geek kindly fixed that in an article I wrote, but I don't know what they did. One option suggested to me was TinyURL, but that was blacklisted. I had the same issue a few months ago (in an article on a Dutch topic, if I remember correctly), and I just let it be, with a plea for help to any geek in the edit summary. Your link opens up a page that prompts me for some plugin which Firefox can't find, unfortunately. Drmies (talk) 04:36, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Interesting... so maybe it would work if one already had the right plugin. If you go in the front way, through the Athens Historic Newspapers page, having already logged in to GALILEO, then you are shown what plugin you need and given the opportunity to install it if you don't already have it. I think what you've ultimately told me is that it is best that I leave out the links. Thanks for the information. LadyofShalott 04:45, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Hah!, Not that I know of. I think Drmies was just trying to reflect the fact that we both did a lot of the article work. Is that still reflected now? LadyofShalott 04:34, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Thanks K. I still don't know how that stuff works. And no, there is nothing going on between the Lady and me. Nothing, you hear? Now hush! Drmies (talk) 04:36, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
  • And yes, the Lady is right--that's what I was trying to do. It worked in the old days for CoM and me, but they didn't have those DYK templates then. Drmies (talk) 04:37, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict)There can only be one article creator (for obvious reasons), however you might be able to game the system by adding a second DYKmake template, we used to do it all the time, remember the glory days of WP:BACON. It lists I listed LoS as the creator, and Doc M as the nominator, which will add the DYK template on both your pages when it is on the main page.--kelapstick(bainuu) 04:42, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm confused - I thought we would both get that anyway, me as creator and DrM as nominator. LadyofShalott 04:48, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
You are correct.--kelapstick(bainuu) 04:50, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
The difference is that the nominator gets a slightly skinnier template which says 'nominated'. Remember Jeanne Galzy, Lady? A similar case--you started, I added. I listed that one in my DYK cabinet, though feeling a little guilty. Drmies (talk) 04:57, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Ah, ok - that makes sense. As for Galzy, you need have no guilt about counting it; you definitely deserve credit there as well. With this one, it looks like Mandarax as fixed it so we both get creator credit. LadyofShalott 05:01, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

<--Mandarax is my favorite geek. Drmies (talk) 05:28, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm glad someone around here knows what they are doing. --kelapstick(bainuu) 05:42, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

The cousins Mitchell

  • M'Lady: Hope I am doing this correctly. Viewing the Institute of Government in your mirror led to a very common error: the William L. Mitchell of the Franklin House is a cousin to the better known William Letcher "Slickhead" Mitchell, member of the University Board of Trustees from 1842 until his death in 1882. According to Charlotte Marshall's Oconee Hill Cemetery history, Major Mitchell of the Franklin House died in 1860 and I find only "Slickhead" listed in the 1906 Catalogue of the Trustees, Officers and Alumni of the U of G. The glorious nickname "Slickhead" was given to the UGA Mitchell to distinguish him from his hotelier cousin and referred to his hair style - but I can't give a citation for that at the moment. Praum (talk) 13:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Ah, interesting. I'm glad I didn't repeat that error! Great nickname, indeed. (BTW, yes you did that just right.) LadyofShalott 18:32, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
>>Alas, I obscured my point with too much nicknamery - Your article identifies Hotel Mitchell as a member of the Board of Trustees, which he was not. "Slick-head" is noted in A.L. Hull's "Historical Sketch of the University of Georgia" on p 117, "He had a cousin (your Mitchell) of the same name living in Athens, and to distinguish him, the soubriquet of "Slick-head" was given Col. Mitchell from his manner of brushing the hair." 128.192.128.43 (talk) 13:24, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Ah-ha: Don't sign in before posting and you get turned into a string of 11 numbers. Praum (talk) 13:31, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh whoops! I wasn't entirely focused when I tried to check the article against what you were telling me, and I didn't catch that. Thanks for the correction! I'll go fix it now. LadyofShalott 14:29, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
OK, I've deleted (what I think is the only) offending phrase. Thank you again for the correction. There's now an article on Camak House. Would you mind looking over it, and making sure I haven't inadvertently repeated any common errors there are well? LadyofShalott 14:36, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Casting Universalism aside, what circle of hell is reserved for quibblers who never write articles themselves, while picking at those of others? Regarding Camak, the only part I question is the venerable chestnut, "a spot technically at the time in Cherokee territory".[5] "Technically" I suppose we're all squatters even today, but in 1801 the Camak lot was in Jackson County, State of Georgia, and part of the original tract of land purchased for the university by John Milledge that year. So Mr. Quibbler - where exactly was the boundary in 1834 or 1801, Ha? I'll try to find out when I'm not trapped in the reading room. Quibbling aside, thank you for two very fine articles highlighting our rich architectural heritage. Praum (talk) 17:56, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, quibble away if it helps me make the article better. I'm going to try to get this one up to good article status, but I'll wait for your findings on the Cherokee question before proceeding. By all means, if you see something to fix, please go ahead and do so! LadyofShalott 02:22, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
I find that the source text doesn't explain the "technicality" or cite a reference. On page 6 of the book, however, the author notes what I've found elsewhere in this hunt; that the land that became Franklin, then Jackson, then Clarke was ceded to Georgia by treaty in the 1780's and formalized by the Washington administration in 1790. If you've had a chance to hear Steven Scurry, you will recall that there is conflict with the Creek after that treaty, but that ends by 1796. Best regards from the killjoy of Athens history, Praum (talk) 16:22, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, in the absence of any further explanation, that does sound odd compared with the boundary line information. I have accordingly (once again) removed the quote from the article. I have also nominated the article to be considered for good article status. That's a first for me, and I am both eager and anxious to see how it goes. (BTW, I wonder when Steven Scurry is going to get around to publishing his work.) LadyofShalott 16:01, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
A lovely photo for the article - hope it goes GA (however that happens - popular acclaim? external review? raw bribery?.) I did send some comments about the ironwork via email, if that account is still active. As far as Steven's work - he keeps discovering new things, so who knows when we'll be treated to a full account. He's very patient in reminding me about things I should remember until I have a book in which I can look them up. Best, Praum (talk) 20:56, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
By now you may wish that a Cherokee raiding party had burned the Camak house, but while chasing down an unrelated reference question this afternoon I found that in the 1933 "Garden History of Georgia, 1733-1933" the short article on Athens claims that everything outside the town boundary was Cherokee territory until the removal in 1838 (my, did we play John Addison Cobb for a sucker) and this is reasserted under the caption for the Camak house on the opposite page. You will seek in vain for the authors' reference, so we may have the earliest mention of the "fact." It's a lovely book, though. Praum (talk) 19:12, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

That could be a very interesting thing to note if you'd like to add it with that citation. Oh, and as for GA, a review was done by an independent editor (who after some copyediting did pass it). LadyofShalott 21:06, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Interesting indeed. It would have to go into a new article on Athens and the disambiguation page would have to be expanded to include both "Athens (city in Georgia)" and "Athens (the Wikipedia page your mother warned you about)." I think I'll just leave the Cherokee borders where everyone else thinks they are, thank you. Praum (talk) 17:31, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Poor you

Are you some lady with no life? You don't own this site, don't let it get to you're head. You are probably some nobody in life. Seriously, get over yourself. Worthless — Preceding unsigned comment added by Badfrench (talkcontribs) 02:12, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

This section is regarding this SPI. LadyofShalott 02:17, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
No, actually you think you run "wikipedia" honestly, I just am telling you the truth. Just because you have no apparent life, its hilarious. You should get out instead of being on this 24/7— Preceding unsigned comment added by Badfrench (talkcontribs)
Got something to hide, Lady? Hey, I thought I was the one who got this kind of crap on their talk page. I think you should be the good cop to my bad cop--you are young and still beautiful, and we don't want you sad and jaded. For me, all hope is lost. Drmies (talk) 19:21, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Wow, that SPI goes way back. Amazing--almost two years, and still punctuating improperly. Drmies (talk) 19:22, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
(:D) sorry Lady, a rose 4 u @-->--- --Chris.urs-o (talk) 19:50, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, Chris! LadyofShalott 19:53, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
(ec) Yeah, socking is a way of life for some people. I actually think that the IP is somebody different (I don't think I've deleted any of PT's pages), but I don't know who it is. LadyofShalott 19:52, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

RE: Vinea summer camp

Please feel free to withdraw. I agree with you that the sources found by Drmies warrant a keep. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:07, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your note! LadyofShalott 23:15, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. Cheers! Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:43, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Lacinato kale

Materialscientist (talk) 18:05, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Cool, I didn't even know it had been nominated for DYK. I presume you are responsible for this, Drmies? Did I do enough to deserve DYK credit here? LadyofShalott 18:31, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, some things get nominated for all the right reasons. Yes you did--two and a half thousand hits, thanks to your hook. Drmies (talk) 05:59, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Very nice! LadyofShalott 13:17, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Women's History Project – Final call for comments on the Scope draft

Our workshop on revising and clarifying the scope of our project has produced a draft outlining our project's scope and criteria for article inclusion. Please join us at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's History/Scope workshop#Scope draft to discuss this document. There's a separate section beneath it for final comments, which will remain open through Tuesday, June 14th. As Cynwolfe says "with good participation, we should be able to revise our project page soon, clearing up the issues we've been dealing with and preparing us to go on to the fun stuff." As a project supporter, we'd really value your opinion. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 06:50, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
