I think you have a good lead section, it is direct and straight to the point. However, I would suggest breaking the sentence into two. I enjoyed that you added a History section, I think it is significant to understand the historical context and use for a piece like this.
The first sentence seems a little long and could be broken into two for clarity. Also the last sentence of the first paragraph(ending with “to further the acceptance of image reverence”) has two footnotes attached to it. I think you did a nice job breaking with the structure, especially considering the original only had two. I think once you fill out the iconography section, it will be a very strong article. Your tone is very neutral throughout the entire article and your articles seem to be sufficient. I suggest looking into more about the iconography of the time when you start your next section, I find it helps me find more icons and symbolism that may not have been mentioned in other sources.
