list of creatures

hello, nice to see your contributions, but I would suggest that the list be included in a new article named "Toriyama Sekien's Hyakki Yakō " or "Hyakki Yakō (Toriyama Sekien)", as the "Hyakki Yakō" article is about the folklore, not a particular artwork inspired by the belief. Taur / Centaur-like creature /etc.

I've dropped a couple comments on the talk page for centaur-like creature, but thought I'd stick a note here in case your watch list stays as busy as mine. SVG??

Is it possible to upload SVG files, and have wiki automatically convert it on the fly to png? If so how do I do this, when I tried to upload an SVG it said it was not a recommended format, I did not see a way to force it to go. I noticed in the uploaded files area you have a couple that are .svg.png. Also, could you please resond on my talk page? Thanks. --Green-Dragon 06:31, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Request for your opinion

Hi Kotengu, I saw you had contributed to the list of monacle wearers on the Monacle page, so I think you might be interested in a move to delete List of bow tie wearers. That list could be combined with the Bow tie article, but I'm arguing that the list should stay as is. If you have an interest in whether or not that list should stay, please visit the deletion discussion (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of bow tie wearers) and throw your two cents in. Hearn's A Japanese Miscellany

Hey, Kotengu. I'm trying to find an online copy of Lafcadio Hearn's A Japanese Miscellany. Google Books seems to have it, but (as usual), I can only get "snippet view". Do you have any idea where I might find this book online? It should be public domain by now. Hearn discusses the okiagari-koboshi/okiagarikoboshi, a kind of self-righting doll that's really popular here in Aizu, and I'd like to write an article about it. Could you be clearer as to what you are referring to? If you're talking about something in the Hanyō article, that word really doesn't refer to any character that's "half demon", it refers to characters who are half-yōkai. Hence the yō (妖). Kotengu 小天狗 21:35, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

It means "knowing or skilful". I saw the edit, looked up scient because, like you I didn't think it was real word. I found it was real and figured the rest of the edit was OK as well. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 21:32, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Gegege no Kitaro

I had the hypens because Kodansha's English version uses hyphens. Though, it may be out of print. Anyway, do you have a copy of Kodansha's bilingual English version? If so, do you know what names it uses? WhisperToMe 21:27, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

I have the books, I'll check the inside when I get home. I think the hyphens there look more like something stuck in as a design flourish than as a spelling decision; maybe why I didn't remember them being there. Kotengu 小天狗 22:41, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Origiin of the term kappa

Hi, Kotengu. There's a potential edit war over at kappa (folklore) over the origin of the name kappa. One user is inserting what he says is a "common knowledge" etymology, while another keeps reverting it as "speculative nonsense". I've seen the name origins touted by the first user before, but I can't find a source citation to back them up and make the second user lay off. Do you have access to any sources that discuss the origins of the term kappa for the water sprite? Thanks for any help, — Brian (talk) 05:05, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Baku revision

Hi, Kotengu,

I got your change to the Baku (spirit) article, and it certainly seems shorter. I also saw that you removed the link to Breen's dictionary. I don't really care all that much, but I admit I didn't follow your comment.

Here's what Breen says.

獏; 貘 【ばく】 (n) (1) (uk) tapir; (2) mo (mythological Chinese chimera similar to a tapir, said to devour bad dreams)

Note that he gives "mo" as a meaning for 獏; if you take that to mean that this kanji is NOT pronounced "mo" in Japanese (and also baku), then I'm fine with that.

The "mo" was part of the definition (i.e. the word translated into Chinese). The actual pronunciation of the kanji is generally given in kana in Japanese-English dictionaries. Kotengu 小天狗 20:26, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
