Macht is Jewish?

edit

King Mondo, I undid your revert on Gabriel Macht re "Macht is Jewish" for several reasons. The fact that Macht comes from a Jewish family is not known to have influenced his acting and hence is not something that should be emphasized to a visiting reader. This fact is, acceptably, mentioned in two of the categorizations of the Macht article, but it is not encyclopedic to give it prominence in the main article. This matter has been discussed in theory elsewhere in Wikipedia (see the talk page for American Jews). It is not clear "ethnicity" applies here any more than being Episcopalian or Presbyterian is "ethnic", unless you have some citation to show that Macht is very involved with some non-mainstream-American group, such as one that adopts a particular dress style, predominantly speaks, say, Yiddish or otherwise distinguishes itself as having some easily recognizable ethnicity. In particular, pointing out that someone is Jewish when there is no clear reason for so doing smacks of aggressive anti-Semitism whether that be the actual intent or not; this is so in light of recent history, where Nazis and other blatant anti-Semitic groups engaged in that kind of behavior with the clear purpose of discrediting an individual, of reminding readers of the alleged threat Jews pose for the rest of humanity and of making it "normal" to despise and dehumanize Jews. Jews and other people who have been sensitized to such practices and who witness their continuation on many websites in the US and Europe and in many middle eastern publications would view singling out Jews for gratuitous "ethnic" remarks with alarm. Wikipedia does not need this kind of thing. There are, of course, entertainers who use their jewishness as part of their shtik and this should certainly be mentioned in any general appraisal of their work. If you have evidence that Macht has been doing this, then by all means exhibit it and provide interesting details for the stub article. Otherwise, please refrain from reverting again. The original mention of Macht being Jewish was placed there as an anonymous edit by someone who has been causing trouble on Wikipedia, who has been blocked in the past, and who posted similar remarks about alleged Jews on a bunch of articles. You can see the kind of motivation that is likely to underlie such edits and I hope you can see why it is best not to have the remark in question in the Macht article. Fair use disputed for Image:Kingmondo-ms.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kingmondo-ms.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:41, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kingmondo-ms.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kingmondo-ms.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:34, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
