October Baseball WikiProject Newsletter

Just wanted to let you know that I moved the bit about losing the most games in MLB down to the history section and added the better lead-off hanger line about being National Champions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thprfssnl (talk • contribs) 16:10, 16 October 2008 (UTC) Now that I look at it the line about having the most losses in the MLB does seem like an important/interesting fact to note in the header of the article and should be kept in there. However I thought it might be worded better if we placed the line "The Phillies are the current National League Champions for 2008" after the "adversity" line. Also, I felt that the wording seemed just a bit forced in that particular line and changed it to "The Phillies are the defending National League Champions." Hey, I was just curious why you reverted my edit I did today to the Phillies history page. I added playoff results, and I'm not sure why you removed them. Thank you for taking that suggestion--those all look like valid points to me. Now we'll just wait and see what NN has to offer in support of his preferred format, and then we can evaluate each set of points on its own merits. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this; up til now it was a lot of "You're wrong!" "No, YOU'RE wrong!!", which never gets anybody anywhere except WP:AN/I. (And by the way, NO I'm not going to block you for this 3RR. This is your one free pass. NEXT time, however, it will be a different story--it's part of my job and I've gotta do it. I'm sure this time was just a mistake; we all make them and it doesn't seem fair to me to block someone for an honest mistake. Hey KV--On History of the Philadelphia Phillies you took out some edits by an IP. I can understand why you changed the header, but what is it about WP: RECENT that you feel was being violated by posting the scores to an already-completed game? The IP left a message on my talk page and he sounds honestly confused--perhaps could you drop by and explain matters to him? Just to make sure I understand what you're saying: you think the info he provided was too specific for the general "history of" article, and should instead be placed on the page for the relevant season. I was just wondering how would be a good way to incorporate the "why can't us" slogan into the history of the phillies article. It really is a big deal here in philadelphia, and the slogan and the story behind it has been making national news (it was in USA today), so it should be significant enough to be in the article. World Series

Hey, glad to have you helping out with the World Series. I was hoping to get it up to a GA (which I think would be a first for a World Series article), so that will probably mean changing the way some of the info is presented from other WS articles (section headings, etc.) but we should be able to figure all that out as we go along. I'm kind of pulling for Tampa, but I am happy it's not the Yanks or Sox again; I also think that it'll be a good series, because if Boston would've came back and won, there would've been no stopping them. I was thinking that we should expand "The teams" section of the article to include something about their regular season play. I like it, some of the stuff like "came out of the All-Star break hot" is kind of POV, but we can fix that. I'll look for some sources and try to do something similar for the Rays. Must everything in this world be real?

Hi, i'm the author of the post KUFRABELASQUE that you have challenged. Would you do the same for any of the incoherent curses in Harry Potter? Or the words that appear in a published book called -The meaning of Liff (words for actions, that have no words in the English dictionary), by none less than Douglas Adams. I think imagination has its place in the world. Imagine contesting Hobbes as a character in a Calvin post, simply because he doesn't exist. This is a world that some of us have created, i would request to respect our imagination and grant us the space we need to express it. What do readers gain from it? How about inspiration to start parallel galaxies?

Re:Lists

Yes. I've had quite a bit of schoolwork to do in the past week or so, and finals will be happening soon so I haven't had much time to work on stuff lately. There is a Pirates encyclopedia at my library that is an awesome book, I was going to check it out eventually to use on the manager's list (I can probably get that one by myself). I'll see what it has about the starting pitchers too, because I'd prefer to use a book to baseballref.com, but that option is there and always avalible. I will have a Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and a January month-long break which I hope to get a lot done during. So any Phillies or Bucs list that you want to work on, plus the 2008 World Series, and we always have the AiD lists. For the longer lists, we could just start it in a sandbox and either one of us could fill in more numbers and names when we have time. Whatever you want to start on, just get it started and I'll jump in when I can, though I can't promise too much during the next week or two. Blackngold29 16:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

2009 Philadelphia Phillies season

I did not like the revert that you did, but the stories on Raul Ibanez and Chan Ho Park were reported on December 12 and 15 respectively on the internet and ESPN. It is a leadpipe cinch (as Richie Ashburn would have said) that Pat Burrell will not return to the Phillies in 2009 as he was not tendered a contract or arbitration. End of story. I left the Utley comment because it is, per the future-sport tag, speculative. My problem with the Park paragraph is (at least in part) the wording: "Also coming to Philadelphia will be..." I read the policy, and I understand what you mean. If you attached this the first time instead of writing a condescending message, I would have been better appeased. Charlie Manuel Quote in 2008 World Series article

Hi Killervogel5! I had a question about the Charlie Manuel Quote that I inserted into the 2008 World Series article. The only source I could find for it was an article on MLB.com but as I watch the speech, on the DVDs I bought, I find that they misquote Charlie a few times in the article I sighted. Charlie says things like, "Hold on a minute, Hey Listen, This is for Philadelphia!" etc....Also he says things like "Alright Thank You!" at the end, not the "I thank you" that the source incorrectly says. I know that these items are not so much important to the story however that is really how Charlie talks and it is part of his charm. As a Phillies fan I feel that the MLB.com source document takes away from Charlie's speech a bit by misquoting him. Is there a way we can get the quote to read verbatim as to what Charlie says or is it simply not important for the Wikipedia article? thanks. Professornox (talk) 01:21, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Phillies Uniform

I'd never noticed the blue O. I've actually been working on the uniforms the last week or so. Some uniforms got updated, and I had to make some changes. Originally, we had the HOF website's images, but a Deletionist conspiracy did not allow that to continue, so I made another version. As I was inexperienced at working with the uniforms, and had to cobble something together quickly, the uniform text and cap logos of much of the uniforms were simply copied and pasted. I took this opportunity to finally fix that, tracing what was there and making these bits actual drawings rather than the copy and pasting of before. There are changes, but on the Phillies uniform, they're less noticable. That's why I kept uploading, as I made changes. I didn't even notice the blue O or your revisions. I used to only like reviewing sports list only too, but I soon realized that other lists are similar to one another (A lead, optional body prose, and the main list) and by following what I did with the sports list I just applied it to other lists. Hardly redundant. The body of the article doesn't include anything about the manager of the club or its regular season records and winning percentages. It's also rather unwieldy to expect a reader to sift through a rather large body words for information that can be more easily and clearly presented in table form. You conveniently overlook the key word in that policy statement: "sometimes" -- as in "sometimes" information listed in tables is better presented in prose form. At WP:Biographies of living persons, it says blogs are reliable if written by a professional. Matt Eddy, the blog's writer, makes his living writing for Baseball America, a reliable source, and is therefore a professional. Here [1] Eddy says he gets his transactions from MLB's transactions databank, which is certainly reliable.

All those sources you listed saying Durbin is a free agent copy their information straight from MLB.com, which doesn't do a good job of keeping their profiles updated unless players are in the major leagues. 2008 Topps (talk) 19:00, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I removed File:Chuck-klein-baseball.jpg from the Philadelphia records article, and deleted the NFC rationale. Per WP:NFCC#8 and WP:NFCC#3, a non-free image generally can't be used in a list or stat article like that - it would be considered decorative, and not fair use. I think you're taking "decorative" the wrong way. There are only so many kinds of images that are non-decorative. The main kinds, and ones that qualify as fair use on Wikipedia are:

• Significant images that are, in and of themselves, subject of critical commentary or discussion. This isn't to be confused with images that show important moments or whose subjects are very very important.
• Images that identify the article subject, like the team logo on a team page or a portrait on a biography.
• Images that provide visual descriptions where text fails - say, the Zapruder film or a map.

Considering the article is a list of team records, all images in the article are decorative. It's just that the Klein portrait is a non-free image, while the others have expired copyrights. We don't lose anything of encyclopedic value when the Klein picture is removed - he still shows up in the records, right? Again, please take the time to review WP:NFCC, particularly #3 and #8. --Mosmof (talk) 21:41, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Your reasoning is "apples and oranges", as those other teams use the article "the" in official correspondence. Yes, Philly Union is an American-style name, but the team doesn't refer to itself at "the Philadelphia Union." What I mean by "official correspondence" is the team's official media reporting, such as the team's website and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Union never refers to itself as "the Union."

Not if third-party sources are inaccurate. Newspapers make mistakes, too. In this case the first-party trumps the the others.

Pretzel history

Why do you always change the addition to the history of the pretzel? It's very hard to evine that they should be of Italian origin. Honestly I've never heard that before - only the name could be Italian or Medieval Latin, and even this point is highly controversial. I gave you the link for the probable German origin, and I would highly recommend to consider that side too. Well, we could play this game forever if you want to. As already known, you're obviously deleting every single comment which does not fit into your concept of "this must be and that couldn't be true". So nobody in Europe really knows about an "Italian origin" of the pretzel. Reuters say that the invention took place in 610 A.D. , others in the third century (which could not be correct, but to show the liguistic reasons is senseless here, I think). And what is the source for reuters? a historical book? Which one? Why should your source be "more scientific" than mine? I really have the feeling that you WANT to be the pretzel invented by Italians. And this is NOT the way wikipedia should be exploited. If you don't omitt these misrepresentations, maybe you should read the fundamental intentions of wikipedia. The German interpretation is a legend. But the Italian intrpretation is a legend, too. In fact, you CAN'T prove the history. So, there is only one way to solve our problem: None of both opinions are in wikipedia, or both of them will be. It's your choice. Cy Young edits

I see that you didn't like my edits to the Cy Young page because they removed the conversion templates from English to metric. But the conversion isn't being done correctly. The distance from the pitching mound to home plate is 60 feet 6 inches. The metric conversion is processing those two numbers separately as if they were two separate distances (yielding the rather strange result of 18m, 152mm). If you know how to make the convert template process "60 feet 6 inches" as one number, then go for it. You could switch to 60.5 feet, but that won't sound right to baseball fans. I only put the template in articles relating to the 2008 Postseason, but I still left the linescores. Also, I included a sample model of what to enter. Team 1 is the road team and Team 2 is the home team.

List of World Series champions

Hello, I've kind of forgotten about the list as of late (and I've been working on other projects) and I suppose we should try to get it done. I believe that the modern series table is finished. Despite what others say on the talk page, it is simple and practical and conveys info effectively. All that is left is the lead, the precursor table and some of the history. Like I said, I'm not an expert on baseball history, so could you take care of the latter?
