Vietnam War Base photos edit

Hi, last year you loaded a bunch of great Vietnam War base photos onto Commons. I looked at Fold3 and found a whole lot more that I would love to download but can't figure out how to do so. For example when I open a photo like this one: [1] and then click Save as it saves a folder with a ton of files with tiny photos. Would you mind walking me through how to do it properly as there are dozens of base and operation photos I'd like to add. Thanks Mztourist (talk) 07:37, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Click on the crossed wrench and hammer symbol in the top right corner [2], then click on 'download' in the panel that appears when you click the symbol. The entire page download gives you the image with the border, while select a region allows you to crop. [3] Kges1901 (talk) 10:23, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

List of tank brigades of the Red Army edit

Should you be interested in returning to some of your old haunts, I've just stubbed this page. Any help appreciated.. Buckshot06 (talk) 12:08, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • For this list we need to work out what information should be included in the list itself to avoid the inconsistencies that developed with other lists. I'm thinking we should mention formation, disband, and conversion dates, awards and honorifics, and briefly list higher units with dates. Many brigades probably have enough information to create articles now. There's also enough information on the evolution of tank brigades to create a separate article on how Soviet tank brigade structure changed. In addition, I think Russian Ground Forces tank brigades should be their own article as their structure is fundamentally different from the WWII brigades as they include their own artillery, making them more of a combined arms force and so are probably larger in terms of strength. Kges1901 (talk) 12:42, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I've been looking at this and agree with nearly all you've said. Taking for example the 4th Tank/1st Guards Tank Brigade, I'd propose that only one article is needed and it should be entitled "1st Guards Tank Brigade" (no disambiguation necessary, I think) with a redirect from "4th Tank Brigade (Soviet Union)". My reasoning is that the unit only existed as 4th Tank for a short period and there was no 2nd formation. I'll take a crack at this one since I have a fair bit of source material. The first 3 volumes of Sharp's Soviet OoB has at least some info on all the Tank and Guards Tank brigades. Sharp also covers tank brigade evolution and structure in some detail during WWII. I'm not sure I want to dive into that, but I'd be willing to provide page scans for anyone who is interested. Wreck Smurfy (talk) 21:04, 13 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I also have a copy of the Sharp's tank brigades books and Zaloga & Ness' Red Army handbook for the structure of tank brigades. In addition, I have enough for bios of almost every tank brigade commander thanks to the Russian biographical dictionary of them. So between Pamyat Naroda and our sources I think we can create some pretty detailed articles. Given Sharp's usage of the German intelligence data and the brevity of many of his entries I'm sure we can do better with Russian sources. But we should prioritize tank corps first since the corps were equivalent to Western armored divisions and tank brigades really regiment strength, so filling in the tank corps first will create previous redlinks. Kges1901 (talk) 14:07, 14 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Many thanks for you both considering this issue. Sure tank corps first; my aim in moving the tank brigades onwards finally now is that independent tank brigades were a considerable part of Red Army operations alongside the rifle divisions. Buckshot06 (talk) 21:27, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • The only disambiguation required, I believe, is a unique case: 6th Guards Tank Brigade (United Kingdom) and 6th Guards Tank Brigade. In the reduction of British armoured divisions from two to one armoured brigade(s), 6th Gds Armd Bde was separated and reorganised as an Army Tank Brigade. Buckshot06 (talk) 21:39, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I also agree that the Corps should come first. Thanks, Buckshot06, for mentioning that one needed disambiguation, whenever we get to it. Kges1901, you seem to have access to deeper sources than I have. I can make some limited use of Pamyat Naroda when the documents are in typescript but manuscript defeats me. Despite this I'm going to push ahead on an article on the 4th Tank/1st Guards Tank Brigade to serve as a template, partly because I've done the research and partly because I just found the cite of the 1st Guards' Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky. Anything you can add once I post it will be greatly appreciated. Wreck Smurfy (talk) 02:13, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
