Name change help with USCT article edit

Hi, Kges. Hope all's well in your world. While working on an article about one of the designers of battle flags for Union regiments during the ACW, I came across a USCT article which doesn't follow the same naming convention for the majority of other USCT articles. It's the 3rd Regiment Infantry U.S. Colored Troops, and its title seems to be a poor mixture of older and more recent naming styles. I remembered that you'd been retitling the non-USCT regiments, and wanted to reach out to see if you could make an adjustment to the title for this particular article (the 3rd USCT) so that it's more in line with the majority of other USCT article titles. With that request in mind, and taking a look at the list of USCT regiments ("Category:United States Colored Troops Civil War regiments"), it seems as if the majority of articles are either titled, "XX United States Colored Infantry" or "xx United States Colored Infantry Regiment" (or they substitute "Cavalry" for "Infantry" where appropriate). So, I'm thinking the correct title should be "3rd United States Colored Infantry"; however, part of me thinks it should actually be "3rd United States Colored Infantry (USCT)" so that people who are more familiar with the USCT designation will be able to locate the articles more easily. (As you know, many of the military headstones for these soldiers were carved with the "USCT" designation.) I realize that you're in intense editing mode with your Russian series right now, but would welcome your thoughts and any help you can provide in retitling the 3rd USCT's article. (By the way, I've been enjoying reading your new articles. Bravo!) Kind Regards. 47thPennVols (talk) 00:54, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks 47thPennVols. In the usage of United States Colored Infantry I am following the NARA microfilm introductions available on Fold3 such as this one. The style of 'XX United States Colored Infantry' is also used by William A. Dobak's Freedom by the Sword, and I append 'regiment' to that because of previous discussions on MILHIST talk - regiment does not tend in secondary sources to be frequently added after 'XX United States Colored Infantry', but would be useful for consistency with the state units that use size descriptors in the title. I think the situation with USCT could be solved best by using redirects, as appending (USCT) to 'XX United States Colored Infantry' is not used in secondary sources, so for example '3rd USCT Infantry' or similar. • Thanks, Kges for the explanation and assistance in improving the article for the 3rd USCT. Your explanation above offers an elegant solution to a frustrating problem. I have another favor to ask. While working on the article for the 127th USCT, my brain opted to create its own variation of the regiment's title. (My bad. Usually I'm better than this, but I've been wrestling with my injured thumb all week, and must have just completely zoned out while creating the article title.) When you have a sec, could you also retitle this one as well? (I'm still working on adding data, but want to make sure that, when I do want to bring it to Milhist for assessment for the contest, the title has already been corrected.) The article is 127th U.S. Colored Infantry. Thank you in advance for your help. 47thPennVols (talk) 17:43, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • P.S. As for all of the other article titles, maybe we could add this as a project for the annual April Milhist clean-up? It might give us a chance to "set in stone" the Civil War Union regiment article naming convention by having a group discussion re: why American Civil War regimental articles are named the way they are, show current members how many times these articles have had their names changed over the years (there have now been at least 3 "projects to fix article titles" that I've come across, which have resulted in names being changed only to be changed back), fix all of the article titles at once and create the appropriate redirects for each, and then create a set of instructions for future editors (the "we've finalized this discussion so don't change the titles again" policy). All of these discussions have made me wonder what options we have to prevent article titles from future tampering. (I know it's possible to protect an entire article if an edit war is underway, but am wondering if it's possible to protect just the title of an article?) 47thPennVols (talk) 17:43, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • I have moved the 127th USCT article. I do not think move protection is needed because that is for exceptional cases and we have not had disruption going on for a while. Kges1901 (talk) 19:03, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

NPR Newsletter No.17 edit

Hello Kges1901/2019,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

Can you locate and document the 5th (possible) Parachute Landing Regiment, which 45th Regt/Brigade now has the honours of? You did start with VDV topics.. Thanks anyway for any assistance. 196.200.34.238 (talk) 17:54, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:Mikhail Alexandrovich Yenshin.jpg edit

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages.
