Hale-Bopp

Hi, thanks for the cleaning up. I was the one who edited Hale-Bopp, concerning the 'conjunction' thing. I am writing to you as you seem like a very fair, nice and experince person in here. I am new and wish you can help me. Somebody removed my editing in the topic Hale-Bopp, so 'below' was what I wrote to him. Can you please help me reinstate my edition if you find my action appopriate? But if you agree with 'him', then I will leave it at that, as I trust in your judgement. Thanks for your time and patience.

The ‘bizarre’ Noah reference which 'he' removed was my edition. I think my edition was appropriate, since it was under the sub-heading ‘Paranoia and superstition’ and it was supported by the ending of that passage in its earlier version ‘the comet became the subject of many bizarre beliefs and theories’. So actually, what 'he' refer to ‘bizarre’ was right on and my editing ‘fit’ into that sub-heading and its content. Thus, it should not be remove.

In fact, my edition was ‘apocalypticism associating Hale-Bopp's possible last perihelion in the days of Noah[1];’

Hale-Bopp came almost at the end of the millennium and like the article said ‘was notable also for inciting a degree of panic about comets not seen for decades.’ The panic is about the ‘apocalypticism’ as much as the ‘millennialism’. There are hundred of websites, connecting Hale-Bopp with ‘End Times Event’ one way or the other. In fact, I have added a link, which is an educational link, ‘Ask the rabbi. Research at Ohr Somayach Institutions, Jerusalem, Israel. The ‘Noah’ reference was not as ‘bizarre’ as it seem, since the Jewish Rabbi stated that ‘there was indeed a new star 4,100 years ago at the time of Noah according to traditional sources’ which he pointed out too that Hale-Bopp according to NASA last appeared about the same time 4,200 years ago.

It is important that we address Hale-Bopp in all its aspects, and give the public general informative facts concerning the comet. With the introduction section of Hale-Bopp as ‘panic about comets not seen for decades’, I strongly belief that the Paranoia and superstitions section, should say something about Hale-Bopp connection with the ‘End Time Event’, instead of just focusing on ‘Heaven’s Gate Cult’ alone. The ‘fact’ is, though as ‘bizarre’ as it may seem, many people do connect Hale-Bopp with ‘Noah’ and ‘apocalypticism’. --The Olive Branch 17:02, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, to your request, I have to say "I don't know." I don't know that much about apocalypticism, millennialism, or ‘Paranoia and superstition’. In the case of my previous edit, I was just trying to clean up the other user's edit grammatically, cite references that I could find, and leave it to the community to decide. In this case, your addition was short, and appeared grammatically correct, with a reference. Therefore, there's not much I can do to clean it up.

In this case, I would suggest that you make your argument on the article's talk page, and let more knowledgeable people make this decision. It appears that you are new to Wikipedia - this article being the only one I see you've edited - so I'd suggest you look over Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, both in general and for arguments to support your case. You appear to have a good WP:NOTCENSORED case, but I'm not yet convinced that "...many people do connect Hale-Bopp with ‘Noah’ and ‘apocalypticism’." (Emphasis mine.) I think it would help if you could find a reference that shows more people paid attention to this.

By the way, to add a new section on a talk page, click the little tab with the "+"; that adds a heading as well. I would also suggest that you be bold and restore your edit before discussing it on the talk page.

Again, please make your argument on the article's talk page, rather than user pages.

Take a look at your sandbox, I included an example. I'll take a look at the template and see what I can come up with tonight. Highway signs

OK...Yes...Where'd that come from?

Anyway, I've mostly given up on adding those signs. Google shows state highways and county roads the same way, so I don't really have a good reference for them. But for what I was doing, I finally decided to stick with the convention, also used in such places as Template:USA, of leaving the image as a link to the image and having the link to the item in question only in the text.

There are only a few minor items that I do differently than you do.

• I personally prefer the official state title rather than the common state name, so I use:
  • |subdivision_name1 = {{flag|Colorado|State of Colorado}}
• (This isn't a width problem if the use Incorporated rather than Incorporated (town) below.)
• For the county, I prefer to use the official county name with a reference to the State of Colorado municipalities list, so I use:

Dear Ken,

I believe you have some very good points. Here are my thoughts.

1. While brevity is very important for infoboxes, brevity can also confuse. Where possible, I try to limit length to one line of normal size type. I feel that official names should be used wherever space permits. This is especially true of counties. Colorado has 12 counties that share their name with their county seat and several more that share their name with a community that is not their county seat. Take the City of Alamosa and Alamosa County for example. When the name Alamosa is used by itself, it almost always refers to the City of Alamosa. The full name Alamosa County is used to refer to the county.

2. I believe that references should almost never be used in the left columns of infoboxes. The <ref name=COMun/> is a reference for municipalities not counties. Placing the reference next to the label County implies that it is a list of counties and their municipalities, which it is not. I prefer placing <ref name=COMun/> after the first county name.

3. Each state defines the limits of its counties and municipalities, so a state reference source is preferred to a generic {{GR|3}} reference. Likewise, a state reference source is preferred to a {{GR|6}} reference for county seats. The United States Census Bureau defines Census Designated Places. A {{GR|3}} reference is appropriate for an unincorporated community that is not a Census Designated Place.
