Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to User:KenCode. While objective prose about beliefs, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. Peridon (talk) 20:05, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of interest editing in WP edit

Hi KenCode - you have been forthright in acknowledging your conflict of interest (COI) and apparently had a clear disclosure on your User page before that was deleted.

I am giving you notice of our COI guideline here, as well as Wikiepdia's Terms of Use, so that you can become familiar with them. I have a couple comments and a request for you at the bottom of this.

Hello, KenCode. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Comments and questions edit

  • First it is great that you had disclosed your COI on your User page, but it seems that the disclosure went too far and became promotional. What we look for is a simple statement. You do not have to reveal any personal information, but you do have to say enough to make it clear that you have a COI. Something like, "I am a founder of Bitshare" or "I work at Bitshare" or whatever else is relevant. Simple and short.
  • You seem to be working with two other users here, MatthewJones608 and FLOat1NGP01NT0O1. Please be aware of meat puppeting and be sure not to violate that.
  • I have opened a discussion at the Conflicts of Interest noticeboard, Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Bitshares, so we can all talk in one place. Would you please come there and Talk? Thanks~ Jytdog (talk) 22:56, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
    • Hi KenCode, i tried to write above, that we would look for with regard to managing COI is a simple disclosure. I am glad you tried to restore disclosure there, but you went too far and made it promotional. Here is the guidance on what you can put on your userpage Wikipedia:User_pages#What_may_I_not_have_in_my_user_pages.3F. As I said, all we need is a simple disclosure - a couple of sentences. If you want more, great, but don't go too far. I am sorry that this all may seem arcane and complicated. Jytdog (talk) 17:14, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
about this closer but still not on target. I gave you the link above, but i don't know if you went and read it. It says "Generally, you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal website" It looks like a personal webpage with your CV and saying how great you are (sorry). What is there, should be relevant to your work here. Let's do it this way - what kinds of articles, do you intend to work on here? If you answer, I can help you edit that down. Jytdog (talk) 17:34, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
your userpage still says "He served as CEO for Line9 Corp (an Oregon Corporation) for over 16 years. While business building there ken managed a globally distributed team of 37 IT employees and sub-contractors, managing the multi-million dollar investment. A humble activist for positive global change, ken is an unflinching and agile Team Leader, working diligently for human freedom. He feels that Blockchain and crypto-currency technology can be the much needed "peaceful awakening" as he calls it." None of that seems to read on editing, and is frankly promotional. Your userpage is still at risk of speedy delete, from my perspective. You don't seem to be getting it, that this is not a personal webpage. And iimportantly, you don't disclose where you have a COI (nothing about Bitshares or whatever else your company actually does) I don't know why you are not talking back to me here... why not? we can talk through this..... 19:23, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
