I know it seems counter-intuitive around here sometimes

We have a strong policy that verifiability trumps veracity, and that all edits are supposed to be sourced not from personal knowledge, but from already-published reports in reliable sources (such as newspapers and books from reputable publishers). The source for your friend's death announcement doesn't have to be a major web newspaper.

It could easily be something in print only, such as a rail industry magazine or official college newsletter. Something that could be found by a good librarian, as long as you post the issue date and page number.

I am sorry for your loss, and I hope that Wikipedia can soon reflect the full facts.
