Simon Burns article

Sorry, I didn't know my first addition of infobox image has a copyright problem. I replaced the image with a non-copyvio image. see my commons uploads--Puramyun31 (talk) 00:29, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

There are lots of problems over MP images uploaded by user:Marquis de la Eirron and the numerous sock puppets of this user. I added you for a checkuser to the SPI report as it looked similar to edits by banned socks. Keith D (talk) 00:41, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

  The Yorkshire Rose
WikiProject Yorkshire
Award of Merit
for valued contributions to Yorkshire articles on Wikipedia
I hereby award you the Rose of the House of York for your quite frankly ridiculous dedication to and tireless efforts in support of WikiProject Yorkshire. Appearing almost continously on my watchlist updating articles and project pages, writing the newsletter every month (which, after taking the reins for the newsletter of WP:X, I appreciate how much work goes into it), and fielding responses to interviewers from the signpost, you are a more than worthy recipient of this award. Many thanks, much appreciated. Keith D (talk) 07:57, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Portal:Yorkshire

Do you think the project is ready for a Featured Portal Review?--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:12, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

I would think so, though it had a previous one that attracted no comments. By the way thanks for the updates as it does not get that much attention. Keith D (talk) 21:16, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Though you may like to look at the lists section which I started with 2 entries and never got round to expanding. Keith D (talk) 21:19, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
No problem, I just stumbled upon it and thought it could do with a spring-clean. I shall have a look.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:31, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Infobox RFC

As you are trying to defend their usefulness, please note I've started an RFC at Template talk:Infobox political post about the (IMHO) totally ridiculous use of an infobox on articles like Northstead etc. I'm also going to say I'm baffled why you think the fact it is an "NI person" had anything to do with my reason for removal, it didn't (and note that you said that on the edit summary on the article about Huhne, although I guessed you meant McGuinness). Abbots Bromley

Greeting KeithD

Just a small note to ask you why you decided to remove the Gallery that I had set up in the Article on Abbots Bromley. What is that you do not like about having a gallery on this page? Also there has been a unwritten consensus on wikipedia that image size within text should be around the 180px and set to a position to the right hand size of the article. It has been advised to avoid sandwiching text between an image and an infobox or similar.large size images take up a lot of room and may look untidy when set into text. There is more information for you here. Always with the best intensions Billhob (talk) 06:38, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, galleries are generally discouraged in articles unless they are well crafted according to WP:IG. As the gallery consisted of a single image I moved it to be with the text it applied to. This may cause sandwiching on some screens or when the TOC is collapsed, but I felt that was better than starting an image gallery. Keith D (talk) 10:56, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Nawton, North Yorkshire

Hi. I would like advice on text in this article here: Nawton. It is a direct copy and paste from the added ref here. The author (editor) died in 1934, so I suppose this cannot be considered copy-vio, but it is a long and extremely lazy addition that over-weights the article. Does this text, essentially a quote, fall foul of WP:QUOTEFARM or any other WP guideline ? Thanks. Acabashi (talk)

I certainly think that it is too long a quote from a reference without any indication that it is a direct quote from the reference. Also the reference details are incomplete and incorrect, author not indicated as editor etc.. I would expect the text to be rewritten so that it avoids a direct quote. Keith D (talk) 17:13, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I will leave a message on the adding editor's talk, inviting him to precis the stuff in his own words - unfortunately he seems to have set up the user account to just drop this stuff in Nawton with the least effort to himself, so I don't hold out too much hope. I'll leave it for a while, and if nothing changes I'll have a go at it. Acabashi (talk)
I have a feeling that this is part of some school, or similar, project as there where a set of over 20 single place editing users created at about the same time. Most of the places being edited are in North Yorkshire but a few in Lincolnshire. Keith D (talk) 17:37, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Frank Whittle article

Hi. Noticed you have helped contribute to the article. The current opening section massively underplays the pioneering work of Whittle and gives a skewed summation of the contribution he gave to the jet engine. I hope you can incorporate this referenced material into the opening section to give a much more balanced summation of his contribution;

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1387958/Nazi-Germany-crushed-3-years-RAF-hadnt-rejected-jet-fighter.html

'Whittle was allowed to file his patent without secrecy and within a few months it reached Berlin, where it was distributed to numerous aeronautical establishments,' 'It triggered keen interest among Germany engineers and led to them developing their own jet engine aircraft, which came into operation during the last months of the Second World War. Whittle, who had confidence in the concept, refused to be beaten and circulated a patent internationally in order to find one or a number of private investors. Crucially, the specifics of the patent were published in their entirety, and it fell into the hands of the Aerodynamic Research Establishment (AVA) - Germany's equivalent to Boeing - which passed the document to Ohain.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-500459/A-genius-betrayed-The-man-invented-jet-engine-ignored-country.html

As a result, the Air Ministry rejected Whittle's design as impractical and carried on ordering traditional planes with propellers. So Whittle took out a patent to protect his turbojet idea which was duly published by the Patent Office. Others saw its merits, however, and German diplomats in London wasted no time ordering copies of the patent. When the patent expired in 1935, Whittle could not even afford the £5 renewal fee. Meanwhile, according to German prisoners interrogated after World War II, Whittle's plans were being circulated around Germany. The secret of an invention which might have stopped the war was well and truly out. The RAF remained supportive of their young genius, however, financing Whittle through Cambridge where, needless to say, he took a First Class degree in Mechanical Sciences. All the while, he was still designing the jet engine he knew would work. Finally, two friends helped him secure enough backing to start a company called Power Jets Ltd, and in April 1937 he fired up an experimental jet engine for the first time. In 1941, a Gloster E28 plane took off with a Whittle jet engine inside it - 12 years after he had first had the idea. Britain had taken the lead in what would be known as the jet age. Whittle had been proved right all along. Production of his jet engine could finally begin. By then, however, the Nazis - equipped with Whittle's original patent - had already beaten him into the air. In 1939, a German engineer called Hans von Ohain had built the first jet plane to take to the sky. It was unreliable and could travel for only six minutes, but history had been made.

Thanks for the information. Though Daily Mail is probably not considered a reliable source by some. Keith D (talk) 13:36, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Pontefract

Thanks for the info about not using <small> in infoboxes; however I'm puzzled as to why. It seems appropriate under a photo. Jodosma (talk) 16:06, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

It should not in captions for photo. The only small now is that for the maps caption. Keith D (talk) 16:12, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
I still don't get it. If we're not supposed to use <small> then how come in the editing window I still see <small> available on the menu under the Advanced option. Is it really a case of "Do as you're told and don't ask questions"? What is wrong with <small>? Jodosma (talk) 22:18, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
<small> is used for some things, such as Honorifics, but no longer for image captions. I think it was mainly because of Accessibility problems that it was dropped, though logged in users can override it displaying small text. Keith D (talk) 22:26, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
It is also used for the References section which some think would be unwieldy as full size. Keith D (talk) 22:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) It is not advisable to use <small>...</small> around text that is already reduced in size compared to normal prose text. Text size within infoboxes and within the References is 90% of normal. --Redrose64 (talk) 06:44, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, much appreciated. I'll steer clear of <small> from now on unless it's absolutely necessary. Jodosma (talk) 08:33, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks to Redrose64 for chipping in. Keith D (talk) 20:16, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

regarding my question.

Hi, It's drafted in my sandbox. Here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Galley_Beggar Assuming you can access that. Any pointers would be handy. Getting a first for an essay at Uni was easier than this. DiGriz sigil (talk) 22:05, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, this site has a lot of quirks. This wasn't to you but feel free to comment :) DiGriz sigil (talk) 22:07, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, would you like to help with H7N9 bird flu?

Avian influenza

Hi,

I'm writing to recent participants at Avian influenza. I think it's important to cover H7N9, without either overstating or understating it. Any time you can spare to help with the research and/or the editing will be most appreciated. Thanks. Cool Nerd (talk) 16:32, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Matt Fish (footballer)

Hi Keith, you look to be involved in a slow edit war with Andysteve (talk · contribs) over datestamps in footballer infoboxes - he's been warned about this before and continues. I've just told him if he continues he will be blocked. GiantSnowman 18:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for warning it is just 1 of the entries on my watchlist. Keith D (talk) 18:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Georgian Theatre Royal

I tend make country conversions in place articles to "England", but do theatres have special dispensation to be location-attached to the UK, like this one ? Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 00:54, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Not that I am aware of, I would go with England. Keith D (talk) 00:56, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 01:05, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Westville, Lincolnshire

Hi. Here's another one with a ref that needs a tweak - I might mess it up if I have a go. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 14:04, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Compass Card

Hi. I've been using the Compass Card on the Boxing the compass page link that would then be linked in infoboxes, this to transfer angles from places to London. You altered a couple of these where I used the "b" element. Does WP advise us not to use the "b" and to make a rough choice either side of it ? This would be useful to know as I intend to work through all Lincs articles adding London distances. Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 20:18, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

I changed it as I thought that is was a typo - I personally have not come across that convention of using a b in compass directions. I do not know if there is any particular wiki ruling on this may be could ask at WP:UK geo and see what others think. Keith D (talk) 20:29, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
I've had feeback from WP UK Geog - Geog talk. You were quite right to change, but for a different reason. I can now get on with the task. Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 20:36, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Scriven

Hi there Keith, just like to thank you with all your assitance and editing of "Scriven" , I'm at the final stages now and was just wondering if there is anything that needs to be corrected immediately? Once again thank you for all your contributions.

Hi, not looking too bad may be some better structure to flow as it seems a by choppy in the organisation. Take a look at WP:UKCITIES which is what we have come up with for ordering of settlement articles. The references could also do with published date adding if it is available.
