Canadian election results

Hey there. The idea behind the Canadian election results templates is to store the data for one portion of the country for one election in a single file. That file can then be included in a summary for one election nationally (c.f. Canadian federal election, 2006 (candidates): All on one page), a summary of the election covering only a third of the country for users with slower connections (c.f. Canadian federal election, 2006 (candidates): Ontario), and finally several elections for a particular region (c.f. Canadian federal election results in Ottawa). Pashtun tribes

Hi Kcordina,

I don't know why User:McKhan didn't want the copyedit tag. He thought that the grammar was fine, but I obviously disagreed. Anyways, another point to make is that they're not Indian. The Pashtun people live in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and I'm not sure which country the Salarzai and Tarkani tribes live in, so we shouldn't give them a stub for now. --Khoikhoi 01:19, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

You see that is exactly the problem with WikiPedia that amateurs here like to think that they are experts. If you don't know where the Salarzais or Tarkani live then why would you even touch those pages? And Pashtuns live all the way from Surinam to Sydney and Los Angeles to Jo'burg. So, why would you think that there are no Pashtuns in India? Did you bother to look at the sources? McKhan

Just want to intercede here. Khoikhoi's correct in that the vast majority of Pashtuns are found in Afghanistan and Pakistan, while small spillover groups are found in Iran (500,000) and India (who speak Pashto and number 40,000). The Pathan issue is another matter. Also the Tarkani reference is obviously derived from a source referring to the Northwest Frontier of British India which should not be confused for modern India. The Tarkani live in the NWFP of Pakistan and not in India, and are ethnic Pashtuns. Hope this clears things up. I've actually studied the Pashtuns quite a bit myself and travelled to Peshawar and some surrounding areas and there is a lot of diversity, but the ethnic Pashtuns who speak Pashto are pretty easy to identify and their identity as a single group was pretty evident to me (and most others). Hmm, I was looking more into the articles in question and found some strange things. First, the only sources seem to be from the early 20th century, even though Akbar S. Ahmed, for example, has written a few books on the subject and even Olaf Caroe is newer than the ancient tome from 1910. Also, a lot of these are small CLANS, not major tribes. The Pashtun page is listing tribes that are generally not within the scope of the recognized tribes, but are considered clans of various sorts. I suggest a re-writing of the tribes sections to reflect more recent sources, including any from Afghanistan and Pakistan, but this may be an issue that cannot be controlled because so far there has been a great deal of disagreement as to who Pashtuns are. You have the Indian Muslim POV that includes Pathans as Pashtuns, while Pashtuns generally don't recognize anyone who doesn't speak Pashto as their mother tongue as a Pashtun. Similarly, their population figures are contested by Persian-speakers in Afghanistan and some Pashtuns believe their numbers are undercounted in Pakistan. I suggest the tribes section be divided into Pashto-speaking and non-Pashto speaking sections at the very least. These articles shouldn't be such a mess. Tombseye 22:48, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

• I don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I think you could cleanup all of Apcbg's articles directly, as with Aheloy Nunatak. I see that you have created Bowles West Peak/Temp because Bowles West Peak is tagged as copyvio. I think it would be easier to get agreement that Apcbg's articles are not copyvios - because he has permission and because you cannot copyright a place name and pair of coords - which is what most of these are. I just wanted to say well done for doing such good job on these articles about places in Antartica. I'll admit that on the one hand I get the feeling that Wikipedia is expanding to include any sort of knowledge of any sort. At the same time, though, where articles are as coherent and well organised as these that you're doing I can immediately recognise that they contribute positively. Great work. Antactic places

Hello. Yes, I've been adding articles to the more suitable category, but they really are so many I certainly won't be able to cope with them by myself. I've left a notice at the user's talk and intend to continue working on the articles. I've used the "what links here" page of the Bulgarian-named Antarctic placename templtate, but the contribution list is certainly a better idea. I hope we'll manage to sort them and copyedit them together. By the way, there's another similar category we need for Greenwich Island, because some of the articles are about toponyms there. Maybe we should even create subcategories of the Geography of x Island categories for the different types of geographic objects at a later stage. I'm perplexed; you can't see any problem with the English here? "Zartonk daily is the official Newspaper of the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party (Ramgavar) and was establised in Beirut, Lebanon on 26 September 1937." As for wikification, the article contains multiple incorrect capitalisations, the dates aren't wikified... I have time now, so I'll do the work, but – and I don't know how to put this in a way that doesn't sound rude, but that honestly isn't my intention – if English is your second language, it's best to leave judgements about it to those whose first language it is.

Sorry about the incorrect inference (and I'm biting back witty comments about lawyers' English). Still, the sentence lacked a definite article, lacked an initial capital for "Daily" and incorrectly added one to "newspaper", omitted the comma after "(Ramvagar)", and misspelt "established".

Hi. The word oakcephal (or, i think oakcephalics sound better) is my weak translation of russian dubocephal. It's not used in russian; it's invented by Gromov, and used only in this novel. Oakcephalics are dumb people, able to simple talk and to simple work (e.g., to operate the main switch at some electrostation). (if you are more interested, e.g. see an excerpt at Talk:Alexander_Gromov)
Actually, dubocephal = "dub" + "cephal". "Dub" is russian for oak -- thick non-sensitive tree, so it's another meaning in russian is "dumb person". Cephalic is a common word meaning head; may be, the most known use of it is anencephalic -- baby, born without brains. ellol 18:19, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem with changing my edits - feel free to change them as you see fit. I'll keep working on the article as I can. I've had a look at the Saint Vitus Minuet part and I don't think it really comes across that she is friendly with Stephen. I'll see if I can improve it a bit. Also, I'm not sure about the use of the 'hybernate'. You sure could do something beyond wikification:

(1) Most of those articles still don't have their illustration pictures. Should you have the time, you may wish to upload more of them or all the rest from the respective articles in http://apc.mfa.government.bg. Excepting few photos explicitly copyrighted to other people (better not to be uploaded for now) the others are mine and their Wikipedia status is to be validated by inserting the following tag in the talk page of each uploaded photo:

(2) Then we could possibly think about some suitable pointers (simple sketches or maps) showing the location of the respective feature on the particular island and in Antarctica (there are some nice examples of such pointers elsewhere in the Wikipedia).

Bad times virus

I removed the prod template from Bad times virus because I dispute the delete. I believe the redirect is useful on the grounds I wouldn't know to go to the new name. Also, there is valid history to be preserved, since material was merged from the article credit to the people providing the merged text should be retained.

I have read through the revised page with lots of added information. However, the reason for deletion is that the subject of the article is not, in my opinion, worthy of an article. Adding vast swathes of largely irrelevent details, eg. "Wears a size 7 shoe", does not make a subject notable. The article also reads as a long advert for the company. I have also yet to see any citations confirming the facts of the pages - although I don't doubt the authenticity, it does cast something of a shadow of doubt when the only website that was linked (that of the supposedly highly-notable company) was not available. I've taken out the link. There was a site and a great one at that, so as soon as it's back up, I'll include the link again. I'll also remove the trivia details. Part of the problem is that Taylor Lea Thomas is a very private person and rarely gives interviews, so it's taking some time to get it all together, but I will. Most of the references are simple short mentions of the site, rather than a proper review of the site, and a one-off mention on a TV show (in an unknown context), does not make it notable. Merging

Hi. I saw some comments you made on the marge page and since the talk doesn't seem so live I figured I'd ask you directly. I'm wondering is there a sorting of proposed mergers by date? Is there a way to go to a random one? It's just that going through them aphabetically can be dull, wheras reading about different topics can be fascinating. Thanks!

Hi. Yes, there is a list of proposed mergers by date you can find it here. The list is generated from a replica of the main database and so is a bit out of date (as noted at the top of the list), but is so much more useful than the alphabetical list - the first one I haven't done is Talk:Bioreactor. I'm thoroughly enjoying working through the list - as you say, it's a great way of seeing lots of subjects, and also, because the proposals are so old the vast majority can be acted on straight away, either by merging, or simply checking the articles, adding cross-links and removing the tags. BTW, if you add ~~~~ to any comments you leave on talk pages, it adds you signature so people know who you are. Just like this :- Kcordina ^Talk 15:49, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Maltese origins

Hi.. I note you have a "Maltese" surname.. do you have Maltese origins?

Hi, I do, but they are somewhat distant. I think, my grandfathers parents (on my fathers side) were from Malta. It's a bit confusing as my father and his parents lived in Egypt and came to England on the last boat out before the Suez crisis, and basically lost contact with all family at that point. My dads mum had an Italian maiden name, so it was clearly only my grandfather of Maltese origin. Beyond that I don't know anything about my heritage. I have been to Malta a couple of times, and have always been embarresed as people spot my name and assume I speak Maltese... Kcordina ^Talk 08:10, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Reliability of sources...

Thanks for volunteering, though I think this is premature, and I don't see what you might do, except remind everyone of relevant WP policy on controversial articles, NPOV, RS and V . There are some new editors who are learning fast (including me). It's not really a problem yet, but it needs vigilance. So far the steam is mainly on Talk pages, where it should be, less on the article pages, so there is a general understanding that things have to be worked out by consensus. The core problem is that alternative health practitioners would like articles to be neutral in the sense of being uncritical (i.e. avoiding claims and criticisms), and factual in the sense of being essentially confined to being descriptive of current practice and theory; "skeptical" editors would like them to be open in discussion of claims and criticisms, neutral in the sense of being led by facts of scientific validity and history. I'm a skeptic (in the sense of being skeptical, not in the sense of being commitedly anti), but as you'll see from my edits I've usually edited in a way that is seen as pro-CAM, mainly because most of the text tends to be added by articulate skeptics who sometimes (in my opinion) allow unnecessary POV into their edits. I think the answer is to encourage (in this case chiropractors) to add more material that describes chiropractic in a helpful and interesting way, rather than concentrate on deleting material that is strong, but which needs to be balanced within the articles as a whole. Skeptics will relax if they are not faced with the fear that if they turn away their research on safety, history and science etc will just be deleted because it casts the CAM in a poor light. We have to all learn to respect each other's points of view, and defend each other's contributions in pursuit of balanceGleng 15:41, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't think there's really anything I can do at the moment to help out - if there's a specific problem I'm happy to try and resolve it, but it seems to me that you are (rightly) worried that articles may not develop optimally due to differing views. Unfortunately that is the nature of Wikipedia, we have to accept peoples varying levels of editorial genius and word around it. I've looked at the Chiropractor page and while there is clearly a big gap between peoples views, it is being discussed, and seems to be progressing. It seems you are going about things the right way by encouraging discussion and trying to encourage people to move to a consensus. Unfortunately I'm not going to have the time, and nor, I doubt, will other volunteers on the cabal, to monitor the articles you mention to spot any problems. Ok, I will refrain from editing it. The relinquishing the whip part was added by David - But I'll go look for a source. It is fact that she was a conservative when tatcher added her to the Lords, and it is fact that she is now a Cross-bencher.. But, it was David who added that reason.

Despite Cox's role in the International Islamic Christian Organisation for Reconciliation and Reconstruction she has been criticized for apparently aiming to bring about a "Clash of civilizations". She is a member of the Jerusalem Summit which advocates denying any Palestinian State and removing Arabs from the Israeli-occupied territories. Her books have been republished on the British National Party website [1].
