Thanks for keeping this for me, Lucky 6.9. - kchandler

  • No prob, K. Since they're getting some active airplay, you might want to go to the "village pump" via the community portal and steer some other users back toward this page. They may be worth an article after all, especially with some community consensus backing it up. - Lucky 6.9 05:56, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dr. G and the Mudcats is a country-rock band hailing from San Marcos, Texas. They bring their unique swampy-tonk sound to several venues around the southwest Texas area and to the airwaves of various radio stations around the US and in several foreign countries. Their home venue is the famous Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, Texas, the Texas rock that gave George Strait his first gig and that has played host to a number of other famous artists such as Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Randy Rogers Band. Their debut album, Mudcat, was also the debut album for Cheatham Street Records, a new indie label headed by Kent Finlay, the venue's proprietor.

Dr. G and the Mudcats sport a honky-tonk, rock-country sound that brings to mind a hybrid of Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Hank Williams. Their influences include, as quoted from their myspace page "Credence Clearwater Revival, Kris Kristofferson, Tony Joe White, Tom T. Hall, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Band, John Prine, Kent Finlay, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Willie Nelson, Victoria Spivey, Billy Joe Shaver, Waylon Jennings, Mickey Newbury, Jimmy Buffet, Muddy Waters, Mark Twain, Woody Guthrie, Aaron Allan, Leadbelly, Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers, Howlin' Wolf, Hank Snow, Aunt Molly Jackson."

With such a breadth of influences, it's no wonder that their sound refuses to allow itself to be pidgeonholed into a single genre. Fans of Texas Country, Rock, and the Blues will all enjoy their unique sound.

Regular Band Members

Dr. Gregg Andrews, aka: Dr. G, is a Professor of History at Texas State University-San Marcos. Doctor G is also the Assistant Director of the Center for Texas Music History and an avid Texas singer/songwriter. He originaly hails from the tiny company town of Ilasco, Missouri. Kyle Schneider of nearby Austin keeps the Mudcats, in Dr. G's own words, "up against the beat."

Rotating Guitarists

They include such artists as Hunter St. Marie, Ed Jurdi, Lars Albrecht, Colin Brooks, and Michael O'Connor.

Trivia

edit

Jones County Jubilee was written for Dr. Andrews' wife, fellow Texas State University history professor Vikki Bynum. The song is based on her book, The Free State of Jones.

Dr. G writes all of the band's songs.

Live performances are given extra spice by frequent and lengthy guitar improvisations by that night's guitarist.
