Speedy deletion of Flora Solomon

edit

A tag has been placed on Flora Solomon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Flora Solomon, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Flora Solomon. Twikker

edit

Hi KavJack. Thanks for the new cover images! Do you need a hand sorting out the copyright issues of the images? If you post replies here I'll be watching so I can get back to you. Ewen (talk) 06:03, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, any help over this would be appreciated

OK, do you still have the images? They could simply be uploaded again. We'd need to state what the copyright status is/was. I don't suppose the original artist is known?
By the way, I never got to see Twikker after 1991 - what do you of its history in the 1990's?
Ewen (talk) 05:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

: A search on Google came up with this entry on Linkedin for a Howard Kay's biography in which he states  : Howard Kay’s Summary (extract) The University of Sheffield BSc, Mathematics, 1991 — 1994 Activities and Societies: Chairman of Sheffield Rag (Sheffield Students' Charities Appeal) 1992/3. Editor of Sheffield Rag Mag "Twikker" 1992 and 1993 - sole editor of Twikker Fish. Sat on Students' Union Council. Member of Student Reception and Community Affairs Committee. Honourary Life President of the Interfaculty Society.

To Ewen: Are you connected with the University of Sheffield ? If you look at my reply in the next section you will notice that I am now living a long way from Sheffield. In the 1990s I was living in Texas, also a long way from Sheffield, so do not know what happened to Twikker. I don't expect there are many copies of that 1961 Twikker left. That was my first year at Sheffield and I sold Twikker on the streets. For some now unknown reason, I don't have copies from 1962 nor 1963 when I was still at the University of Sheffield.

Hi Kavjack. I edited Twikker from 1989 to 1991. I've shared a few beers with John McElwaine and corresponded with John Morewood too. From what you wrote below, I'm sure the 1961 cover is out of copyright - the rag committee were the copyright holders and would be fine with publishing the image, I'm sure. For 1996 it's trickier as the publishing is not explicitly copyrighted by the rag committee - it may lie with the publishers.
On a technical wiki note, you can use : to indent replies and ~~~~ to sign and date them.
And I have to ask, how does a Californian know about Twikker?
Best wishes, Ewen (talk) 21:17, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

: I never knew anybody on the Rag Committee (1961), except I met Gerry Birmingham the Prize draw organizer. I received a cigarette lighter from him for selling a large number of raffle tickets.

: so should I try uploading the images again ?  : :~~~~ I don't seem to have date and signage correct - am trying to follow your instruction

I put the <nowiki> markers in so the : and ~~~~ symbols would be printed, instead of used by wikipedia as instructions!
Gerry Bermingham became an MP!

: Interesting about Gerry Bermingham. I spelled his name as Birmingham because that's how it's spelt in the 1961 Twikker page 17.

Chris Paterson, the 1962 editor, wrote me an article for the 1990 Twikker, reminiscing about characters such as Monica Toole, Pete Winter and Bob Ball. Mean anything to you?

:No. I notice on page 17 that a Robert Ball was in charge of Street Collections

If you tried uploading the images again I think I could explain to the admins why the copyright issue isn't a problem. Let's give it a go!
Ewen (talk) 06:14, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

: I have just uploaded the images again. If you don't mind I will leave it up to you to explain to WIkipedia why we don't think copyright will be a problem.

: This copyright issue can become a can of worms. I know that Wikipedia have to protect themselves but most of us are not copyright lawyers. I took some photos in 2006 of my old school [[Rawdon Littlemoor primary school]] before they pulled it down and posted it in Wikipedia. As you can read above I got a little grief about copyright. [[Rawdon Littlemoor primary school]] has connections to famous Yorkshire cricketers

: The Lord Mayor of Sheffield in 1961 was J.W.Sterland and he provided the foreword. I wonder if [[Mel Sterland]], the Sheffield Footballer, was related to him ?

Hello KavJack, I noticed you had the {{helpme}} template requesting assistance in getting your "Twikker 1961.jpg" image back. Images that you upload require a license, either stating that you created it yourself, or citing fairuse and the sources where it came from. Your image is currently deleted but If you told me : 1)where the image came from, and 2) what article you wanted to include it in, I'll try to help you out w/ the choosing the appropriate License. You can also ask for help here. -- $user log (Talk) @ 01:07, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I sometimes have trouble navigating and understanding these articles on contributing to Wikipedia. Anyway the Twikker images came from a scan of front covers from the two Twikker magazines that I have in my possession. Twikker was the magazine produced for Rag Day by the Students at the University of Sheffield. I graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1964. I now live in California, USA. I understand from a friend of mine in Sheffield that Twikker is now no longer produced and may have ceased publication in the 1990s. Therefore the article about Twikker in wikipedia may be the only source of information for new students about to attend the University of Sheffield. That is why I thought it might be of interest to include those two images in your article. I wouldn't know from whom to acquire permission if needed - probably from the Union of Students at the University of Sheffield.

I still have the magazines and the scanned images. As regards publication data : For the 1961 magazine, the editor was John H. M. Morewood the sub-editor was Peter Longworth The cartoon editor was "Spot" who was responsible for the front cover. (Note: this is what it says - I have no idea who or what "Spot" means -- from page 51) Cartoonists: Ian Lyster and David Alexander. Twikker was published by the Rag Committee of the University of Sheffield Students' Union. This is an extract from inside the magazine.

For the 1995/96 magazine, the editor was John McElwaine Published by the Sheffield Students' Charities Appeal Rag Committee. No mention about who drew or compiled or was otherwise responsible for the front cover.

I hope that this helps with regard to determining permissibility. There is no mention of any copyright in either magazine.

Hi KavJack. Looks like there isn't a simple tag for 'copyright never claimed' but I'll see what I can do.

Ewen (talk) 17:34, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think that in this case where the original image was not copyrighted (there's nothing in the original to mark it as copyright) then you can claim to be the creator of the image and release the image's intellectual property rights.
Ewen (talk) 17:38, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

: Via google over the weekend I found your successor at Twikker - the editor of Twikker for 1992 and 1993 was Howard Kay. I got an e*mail from him today and this is what he said == The strangest email to ever come from my marketing department - and that is saying something. Yes I am that Twikker editor and also somehow graduated in Mathematics. Hadn't realised we had a Wiki page - who'd have thought Ewen would be quite so prosaic about it all. Perhaps I will add some of the jokes from my Twikker Fish or scan up the covers from the other ones I have in a box somewhere. Thanks for showing me my history in a new light Howard Kay ex Rag Chair, ex Twikker Editor, Honourary Life President of the Interfaculty Society (and I've not used that title in a while!)

: by the way my e*mail address is kavjack@charter.net. I don't know if it's cool to mention these e*mails here. But you can always delete it if you like.

I'll butt my head in here and suggest Template:Magazine rationale. Cheers! DoubleBlue (Talk) 05:06, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure that Template:Magazine rationale does it: The images KavJack scanned were not, apparently, copyrighted when they were published. Ewen (talk) 08:27, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:DTvsNYG.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:DTvsNYG.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Speedy deletion nomination of Dallas Raines

A tag has been placed on Dallas Raines requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. SKATER Speak. 04:55, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't understand why my entry for Dallas Raines was deleted so speedily. There was a stub there before and wikipedia invited me to fill the stub. I did do based on the bio referenced in KABC-TV's website. Other personalities connected with KABC-TV of lesser visibility or stature than Mr. Raines have pages here in wikipedia so at the very least you are not being consistent in the application of whatever wikipedia rule is appropriate. Also the highlighted reference to Leslie Miller in the KABC-TV section is incorrect. By the way, I am not related to or connected with Mr. Raines in any way. Since quite a few comments are made about his last name with reference to his profession as a meterologist I thought he deserved more than a stub. I am however not going to pursue this. Speedy deletion nomination of Tim Atack

edit

A tag has been placed on Tim Atack requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay.
