Personal Information on your Userpage

edit

Hi KatieW1992. My name is Backslash Forwardslash. I am a Wikipedia administrator, and I noticed you have recently created a userpage. I don't intend to scare you away or attempt to intimidate you, but I thought you might want to reconsider some of the items on your userpage. You may have not realised that the items on your userpage release personal information about yourself (real name or age etc), which could be used against you in the future. While 99% of all the editors on Wikipedia are friendly, welcoming and harmless, there is a chance your personal information could be misused by editors not so 'high-minded'. A handful of editors have even felt real-world implications due to their Wikipedia edits and release of personal information.

Protecting your privacy, and remaining anonymous while on the internet — on any site — is a good idea. The internet is a worldwide and largely unregulated medium, and while Wikipedia is one of the safer sites, there are definite risks while online. With cyber-bullying and cyberstalking becoming increasingly commonplace, it is important that you take every precaution to remain safe.

I have deleted some revisions of your userpage in respect to your privacy for the time being, just in case you wish to reverse on your decision to have such content on public display. As a result, the information is only available to administrators. You are, of course, welcome to ask myself or another administrator to restore them, but I just wanted to make you aware of the risks involved with releasing personal information on such a public forum. If you wish to have the personal information removed so that even administrators cannot view it, I can request oversight on your behalf. You are also welcome to discuss this with me on my talk page, or privately via e-mail if you have any concerns. Again, I do not want to scare you. Wikipedia is a fantastic place with an incredibly supportive community. I'm just trying to ensure you are fully aware of the risks involved in editing, which are very similar to the risks you come across every day online. Hope to hear from you. \ Backslash Forwardslash / (talk) 04:53, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not sure why this was posted - looking at your user page I see nothing posted other than a "?" mark. --JimmyButler (talk) 18:03, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
The above posting is weird. The user edited nothing. And, there was nothing to edit, according to the time stamp. Wiki-weirdness. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 03:01, 2 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
(Asked to comment by JimmyButler) – I guess that there was in fact something there, and that Backslash Forwardslash has used administrator powers to permanently delete whatever it was. See here for a trace of this activity. No problem, as far as I can see, with the present version – but do take care about what you put on your user page. My personal preference is to reveal very little about myself; others say a lot more; but do be aware! In general, you might want to say a little more about your Wikipedia goals, and a little less about your life goals. Oh – and have fun with the AP Biology project! I just now discovered this page, if that doesn't reveal too much about how technically challenged I am. I find Backslash Forwardslash's comment a bit nebulous because I assumed that my little "about me" spill was one of the least detailed out of the project bunch. Although I sincerely appreciate the concern. And I must say, I was so confused when Mr. Butler put up my page on the projector and it only had a question mark. Luckily I saved my bio to a word document and re-posted it asap. Addressing Mr. Butler's comment, I do intend to expand on my wiki intentions as the project goes on, because at the moment I have no clue what to expect. Well, I am embarrassed not to have noticed that earlier deleted user page. Now that I've reviewed the deletion: my opinion is that Backslash Forwardslash (talk · contribs) over reacted. KatieW1992 (talk · contribs) posted a first name - presumably her first name - and the last name of her teacher - which is public knowledge on the AP Biology project. An unfortunate tempest in a teapot. Hopefully, your experience with Wikipedia administration won't be so baffling from now on. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 04:51, 6 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Actually I find your description perfectly in-line with expectations and should serve as an excellent example for the others in the class to follow. For this project - at least - I wish for those that offer us assistance to gain a sense of what you are all about. Where do you interest lie, what are your long-term goals as well as your expectations for this project. Certainly more information than would be expected on a typical user page; however, the relationship we have with the community as a sort of mentor / men-tee may be enhanced by such information. No worries - you are right on target from my perspective. --JimmyButler (talk) 02:43, 9 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

No worries. You haven't vandalized Wikipedia. A couple of your classmates did a few silly things. But on the scale of Wikipedia vandalism, even that was nothing. You and your class are doing well on Wikipedia. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 04:54, 6 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
