Motivation Impairment Effect

The motivation impairment effect is founded on the basis that deception is associated with heightened mental, emotional, and cognitive responses caused by emotions of fear of being discovered, guilt, and feeling uncomfortable (Suchotzki et al., 2017). Individuals who are highly motivated to deceive others attempt to regulate their communication cues and to come up with a performance that will support their deception compared to unmotivated individuals. The motivation impairment effect suggests that heightened response and behavioral regulation related to attempts to achieve deception end up inhibiting the deceptive success instead of promoting it due to nonverbal leakages.
