Proposed deletion of Funakoshi karate

edit

The article Funakoshi karate has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not appear to be a notable style of karate. Searches turn up the organisation's own website and those of its satellite schools, no third-party coverage, no books published on the subject, no news coverage.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi Karatekzn. The issue is not whether Funakoshi Karate is a recognised style, but whether it is a notable style. I've been unable to find any sources that discuss this style of karate in any detail, beyond those produced by the organisation itself. Wikipedia only includes articles on subjects with proven notability, ie. those which have been written about elsewhere already.
Now it could be that I've been looking in the wrong place - if you can supply some references for the article that show it has been commented on or written about by people outside the organisation, then that would be great and perfectly sufficient to let the article stand. Have a read of WP:RS to get an idea of the sort of sources usually required. If you need any help citing them in the article, let me know and I'll be happy to lend a hand.
As to the removal of content this morning, that was me. The description of gradings and belt rankings was not written in an encyclopedic tone (lots of references to "our style", "our students" and other phrases that made it look like advertising copy). Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and needs to be written as such. You also removed the Category:Karate (which is useful to help interested parties find the article) and the Unsourced tag (which is not intended as a criticism of the article; it's there to encourage other editors to look for reliable sources to improve it).
I hope this helps to clear things up. Yunshui (talk) 07:49, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh, incidentally you are allowed to remove the Proposed deletion tag from the article if you disagree with it. Just edit the page and remove everything above the {{Unsourced|date=September 2011}} line. Put a note in the edit summary or on the discussion page explaining your reasoning, so that other editors can understand why the tag was removed.
If the PROD is removed, I will probably take the article to AfD later today if it stays unsourced; this is a forum where other editors can get involved and discuss whether or not the article should stay. Cheers, Yunshui (talk) 07:59, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
In light of the references you added, I've withdrawn the Proposed deletion. I've also moved the references to the end of the article text so that they appear as inline citations. Yunshui (talk) 08:23, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sources for Funakoshi karate may not be sufficient

edit

I've got a copy of Sanette Smit's book in front of me, but I haven't been able to find a reference to the Funakoshi style or to Eddie Ward within it. Please could you point me to the correct page (the copy I've got is the second edition, ISBN 9781847731500)? Cheers.

Also the, IOL report, whilst a valid source, does not discuss Funakoshi karate in any detail - it's only a passing mention. Whilst that suffices to establish existence, we need more substantial coverage of the topic itself to warrant inclusion.

I'm sorry to keep badgering you like this. If Funakoshi karate is genuinely notable by Wikipedia's guidelines then I want to see an article on it, but by the same token, if it doesn't meet the notability guidelines then it really doesn't belong here. The only way to resolve this is with reliable sources; Smit is a good one, but as I say, I can't actually find the bit where she discusses the Funakoshi style. Yunshui (talk) 08:38, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've been through Smit's book with a fine-tooth comb, but all I can find is a passing mention of the dojo in the dedications - no coverage of the style within the book. As such, and given the lack of other sources, I'm filing an AfD. You can join the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Funakoshi karate. Yunshui (talk) 12:35, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Funakoshi karate

edit

Just wanted to let you know that I saw that you created the new article Funakoshi karate--However, I noticed there are some holes that may need filling: the article does not contain enough in-line citations, and so doesn't follow Wikipedia style guidelines. There is an Article about User talk:Yunshui on his page see World Marketplace on his page [[[User talk:Yunshui]]. This user delited a lot of Articles in WIKI and he is not an administrator. I think we need to stop him to help vandals editors. Interface Designer (talk) 12:12, 29 October 2011 (UTC) Interface DesignerReply
