Overlinking

Hi, please familiarise yourself with wp:overlink. We do not link common terms such as "village" or link to a list of countries in the world. Tony (talk) 06:09, 3 January 2020 (UTC) @Tony1: Thanks for the note. I had copied the basic outline from an earlier article, and totally slipped my mind to clean it up like that. Peer review

Kaiser matias, I am so impressed with the Samuel May Williams article that I am wondering whether it is a FAC. The clarifications and improvements from User:78.26 and the addition by User:PGNormand of a tight free masonry section make it hard for me to imagine how the article could be improved further. I have listed the article at peer review in order to prepare it for FAC: [[1]] Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Oldsanfelipe2 (talk) 09:54, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

@Oldsanfelipe2: Yeah it would definitely be worth putting the article at FAC and seeing how it goes. I don't know if you've been involved with the process before, but I would note that you want to make sure the prose is air-tight before going there, so it's good you listed it at Peer Review. Also, I would ensure the images used are all free and have proper licensing, as that is a huge issue that comes up (I always have troubles myself in that regard). You'll need to ensure the earliest publication date and source of them is listed, and ensure they are actually free. I can also take a look in the near future and offer some suggestions again, and would be happy to comment during the FAC. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:12, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
FAC is new to me. I'll create a file with the details on the image sources and their licencing status. Thanks, Oldsanfelipe2 (talk) 19:05, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
@Oldsanfelipe2: No problem. Like I said I'll try to take a look at the PR, and if/when you go to FAC I'll also try to contribute then. Kaiser matias (talk) 21:05, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you today for Nestor Lakoba, about a "national hero in Abkhazia, a region that most of the international community considers part of Georgia, Nestor Lakoba was an early Bolshevik who due to his friendship with Stalin effectively ruled the region as his own fief for a decade (they called it "Lakobistan" due to his control). As Stalin started the Great Purge of the 1930s, his opinion of Lakoba diminished, and so a rival for Stalin's favour, Beria, had Lakoba poisoned."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:02, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you today for Sergo Ordzhonikidze, about "A leading Bolshevik and once a close friend of Stalin, Sergo Ordzhonikidze was very active in the early years of the Soviet Union. Cyclone Taylor

Hi, Kaiser matias. I'll try to find some time to clean a few things up tomorrow, but can't make any promises that I'll be able to do full-scale copy-editing. I'm starting to enter my busy season in real life, and finding time to keep up my regular editing schedule is a challenge sometimes. Still, I'll do what I can to help. Giants2008 (Talk) 23:32, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

@Giants2008: Thanks for the reply. If you can do anything that would be great, but of course real life things come first. Appreciate anything you can do though. Kaiser matias (talk) 15:44, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Okay, I finished going through the article earlier today. Along with fixing several prose bugs, I changed the prose to active voice in numerous places, cut down on the snake-like sentences that were criticized at the first FAC, and added some non-breaking spaces. I won't guarantee that the copy-editing has addressed every possible complaint, but in my mind the article has gotten better. Feel free to reverse any changes you don't like. Giants2008 (Talk) 02:55, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
@Giants2008: Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, been traveling. But thanks greatly for taking the time here. I really do appreciate it, and certainly think it makes the article better. I'll be sending it to FAC again shortly then, and hopefully this will be enough to get it through in due time. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:00, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Wikiproject template

I just noticed you took off the bio=yes on a few player's wikiproject templates such as here. Just wondered if it was a mistake or if there was a reason. When you remove it you remove the player from Category:WikiProject Ice Hockey biographical articles so it shouldn't be removed unless of course the article isn't about a person. -DJSasso (talk) 18:42, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

@Djsasso: Sorry that is me not paying attention when going through. Usually copy and paste the template, and I didn't have that saved. Thanks for noticing that, I'll keep it in mind moving forward though. Kaiser matias (talk) 19:18, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Russian Five

Hi Kaiser matias, I noticed your edits to the talk page of Russian Five with the B-class and all that, and not knowing what that was, I started reading, and that led me to Wikipedia:Good articles. I think I'd very much like to get that article to the point where it gets that designation. Do you have any advice on what needs to be done? JimKaatFan (talk) 18:33, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

@JimKaatFan: Thanks for the question. I also saw that the article doesn't need much work to get to GA status, and if you're willing to go for it I'll be glad to assist, though would prefer to advise if that makes sense. From a quick look I'd suggest expanding the lead to make it have a good summary of the article (so for example what the Russian Five were, where they came from, what they did, why they broke up, and their legacy). That shouldn't be too long, but I think like two paragraphs would be a good starting point. I haven't gone through the article in depth at the moment, but see that most basic points are covered; you would want to ensure that is still the case, and expand if necessary. I also noticed that you've used the recent book on them (which I haven't read yet but would like to; hope it is good), but for citations have simply listed chapters. I would be more specific, and give page numbers for citations, as it helps readers verify facts easier. Finally, I'll note that four of the players have photos available (Konstantinov doesn't), and while they don't have them in Red Wings jerseys, it may be worth including into the article, but on that I'm kind of conflicted as I personally would prefer to have them in Detroit colours for this article, which isn't possible at the moment. That all said, if you want more advice on anything with it, I'll be happy to help, and definitely can help with the GA process. Kaiser matias (talk) 18:45, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, if you'd like to advise, I think I can handle the editing.
On the chapters/page thing, I do have a good reason for doing that and I don't know that I can fix that alone. I don't have a physical copy of the book (it's excellent, by the way), only an e-book, and when I open that up, page numbers change based on how large I make the window (or if I changed the font size). So I have no idea what the original page numbering is. Google Books doesn't offer a preview; at least, not that I've found. I'll check again.
I think the pictures idea is a good one, and even if they're not in Detroit colors, might still be good in the paragraphs where they're introduced, since at the top of those sections, they're not "Red Wings" yet. I've never added a picture yet, but I did move the two that were already there before my edits, so I guess I can handle that. JimKaatFan (talk) 18:50, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
@JimKaatFan:That makes sense having only an ebook available. I would look at trying to get a physical copy to add pages though (I realise that's not exactly easy these days), as I can see that coming up in any review. And yeah photos are always nice, especially when you have some decent ones of the subject. Anything else you need just let me know. Kaiser matias (talk) 19:20, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi again, Kaiser matias, I wrote a lead section for the article. Hasn't been edited by anyone else so I think it's stable. I looked at the pictures - they seem awkward, because they're all in NHL uniforms of other teams. If they were at least in USSR uniforms, that would probably work, but they don't really seem to fit. What I'd like to do is research more on how to get new pictures into Wikimedia - a quick read left me with the impression that it's quite difficult to add pictures because of the copyright requirements. But I figure that can probably wait. What do you think? JimKaatFan (talk) 21:22, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Yeah the photos are an issue, and due to copyright restrictions it is not easy to get former players, so it may have to go without. As to the lead, it definitely is more of an overview of the article, and I'd also consider adding a final sentence or two explaining when the other four left the Red Wings; even just something simple like "The remaining four players continued to play for Detroit for several more years, and by 2003 they had all either been traded, signed with new teams, or retired." I also wonder if it would be useful to note here that while forward lines are common, five-man units are not in the NHL, and that is also what made the Russian Five a big deal. Kaiser matias (talk) 23:38, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
I basically copy-pasted what you said above and edited it to make it fit (Fetisov retired after the '98 Cup win), hope you don't mind. I skipped the thing about the five-man unit because Bowman didn't always play them as a unit, although he often did, and I couldn't figure out a way to succinctly and accurately convey that in the lead. I also don't really have a statement like that in the body; although I could add it, I would have to find new sourcing for it, because I don't recall seeing an explicit statement like that during my research. JimKaatFan (talk) 18:58, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
That's fair, if there's nothing written about it you can't really include it. Kaiser matias (talk) 00:49, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

About your recent reverts of my edits

Actually your reverts were inappropriate, since although the English Wikipedia contains more than 6 million articles, it does lack many important articles (e.g. Abkhaz nationalism and Kosta Kaziev), and the recent edits made by me that were reverted by you later were additions of red links to Abkhaz nationalism, and they no doubt stimulate creation of the article.--RekishiEJ (talk) 07:30, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

@RekishiEJ: My concern is that Abkhaz nationalism is not really a topic that is written about or widely regarded (I don't think I recall doing anything regarding Kosta Kaziev, and won't speak on his notability), and so it only serves to overlink topics, which is enough of an issue at times when articles already exist, let alone non-existent articles. I also tend to act quickly on articles relating to Abkhazia and the region as a whole, as it is a contentious topic fraught with distortions and accusations; I hope you can understand that, and would be glad to discuss the issues further. 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment

Kaiser matias - thank you for your valuable comments on the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. This is the fourth regiment that I have created/upgraded on Wikipedia. It is definitely the worst group of fighters, but the article may become the best written. I will go through your comments and address each one. I don't know how familiar you are with the American Civil War, but many leaders at the start of the war were political appointees seeking glory and unqualified to lead. In the case of Colonel Bryan, he was a good drill instructor but probably past his prime and not in good health. This is typical of many early regimental leaders, and they gradually got "weeded out". Many of the regimental historians took care to not insult these early leaders, so details about the times they were absent were usually omitted. As an example, the 1st West Virginia Cavalry Regiment's Colonel Anisansel was derided by his American colleagues as ″one of the foreign adventurers who so largely officered our army at its beginning and were absolutely useless for any purpose except to draw their pay and wear gold braid." You should be able to find that quote in a book or two, but not in any history of the 1st West Virginia written immediately after the war by former members of the regiment. Anyway, it is great to have a different point-of-view, and I will address everything in the next week or so—currently I have been working on Swains Lock and Pennyfield Lock. BTW, only a battalion was at Waynesboro near the end of the war because two thirds of the regiment had no horses and remained in camp. TwoScars (talk) 16:10, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

@TwoScars: Thanks for the update. It was definitely an interesting read, and I'm sure was fun to research and write as as result. So much going on for that regiment. As for my knowledge of the Civil War, I have a grasp of the basics, maybe a little more, but can't say I've read anything specifically focusing on the war, which can be both a good and bad thing for someone reviewing. As for your notes above, it's much appreciated and does help give context. Once you finish editing, let me know again, and I'll be happy to give it another read through. While you can't open a closed review, I don't know if opening a new one is necessary either; I will be happy to go through it still and can post my comments on the talk page of the article. Hi Kaiser,
The article has been reviewed by a Guild of Copy Editors editor as you asked. Also it has been expanded since your last review. I have nominated it for a Good Article. Consider having a look. Farhan nasim (talk) 07:20, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
@Farhan nasim: Thanks for the update. The article looks pretty good now, and I'm glad to see you have brought it to GAC. However I think that it would be good to have a different person review it at this stage, just so you can get some additional commentary and a fresh look. That said I will be happy to continue to help where I can, and will keep watch for how things go. Best of luck. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:52, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
@Kaiser matias: You are right. I have put the article for another round of peer review. Thanks. Farhan nasim (talk) 18:11, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
