Soprano

I just happened to read about an Irish soprano who commissioned a song cycle on Irish poems, to be premiered next Sunday, Clare Treacey, see here. Did you ever hear from her? Good for an article? - I heard this one, - stunning! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:10, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Book

Hello! Dear Colleague, I'm searching one book.

  • Ölçer, Cüneyt, Coinage of the Emirate’s [sic] of Aidin: Emirate’s [sic] of Theologues, Ephesus Istanbul: Yenilik Basimevi, 1985.

According to this talk You had got it several years ago. Do You have it now or do You know where it may be? I live in Russia, so it is very big problem to find it.--Удивленный1 (talk) 05:46, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello there,

I’m afraid it’s a difficult book to find anywhere. I borrowed it from the Harvard University library back then - I don’t own it and no longer have access to that library. I am sorry that I can’t help you find it somewhere closer to home. I guess I’d advise finding the best academic library you can and see if they can arrange an intra-library loan for you. Best wishes, Kafka Liz (talk) 19:41, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

To save you searching, here's every catalogued copy of it. Worldcat sometimes doesn't log items in Russia, as Cyrillic database entries confuse it and some Soviet-era archives still use card-index catalogs, but it looks like almost every publicly-accessible copy is in Germany.) Annoyingly, Hathi Trust and Google have both digitized it, but owing to copyright restrictions both display it in snippet view only. You can buy a copy currently for sale for $25 plus shipping, which is probably the easiest thing if you really need it and aren't in a position to visit Germany, Oxford or Istanbul. ‑ Iridescent 2 20:20, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Bill Callahan

here you go liz. Yes I agree its unusually great; utterly crushing and uplifting at the same time. Ceoil (talk) 22:46, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Oh, perfect. Thank you - I had forgot the name. Kafka Liz (talk) 22:51, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
I probably shouldn’t say this, but it’s rare to see a song/video that shows this perspective. I think it is both true and sad. Kafka Liz (talk) 22:56, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
Yes it is. I love how the mood breaks from the despair in the bedroom to the ecstasy of the kids jumping in the pool ("When I was a boy"). The video has more charisma (though that's not the point) that "Florida Project", which is the same sad thing but in movie form. Ceoil (talk) 23:13, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Please check out "Happy" once more, for a smile, and sharing (a Nobel Peace Prize), and resolutions. I wanted that for 1 January, but then wasn't sad about having our music pictured instead. Not too late for resolutions, New Year or not. DYK that he probably kept me on Wikipedia, back in 2012? By the line (which brought him to my attention, and earned the first precious in br'erly style) that I added to my editnotice, in fond memory? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:27, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Six years!

Funny that you have "soprano" on top, and today the Main page shows a soprano, pictured 35 times ;) - one of many in March (see my talk today, or later click on the first "women" on my user page). Musing about symphony names also on my talk, de profundis. How are you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:59, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, Gerda. It’s kind of you both for the gift and to remember. I’m not around much these days, but I do check in occasionally, and it’s nice to know folks think well of me. I trust you are well? Kafka Liz (talk) 23:21, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for asking, yes, well, vacation in Jordan, good musical plans for Good Friday and Easter and beyond. See my talk today for an image I took, - different style church from the one in Cork. Thank you for the images you took for that one! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:30, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Gerda, have you ever visited the US? I think you’d love New England, but the Southwest might also appeal. The Southwest has these magnificent red rock formations that are like nothing you’ll find in Europe or the Middle East. Those are my recs; you can pretty much skip the rest of the place ;) Kafka Liz (talk) 07:36, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
yes and yes and yes!!! Without giving away too much private information (I hope), I lived in the US in three different decades and countries for years, or at least months, and travelled in I'd say more states than not, one long trip exclusively dedicated to National Parks and Monuments in the West and South, loving Arches especially. I also have family over there. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:08, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
Oh, that’s lovely to hear! I’ve driven across the US twice, and visiting these sites was really something else! I was following the Mormon Trail back in ‘09 - not LDS, but I have a keen interest - and I saw so much great stuff along the way. I can’t imagine what it must have looked like to early LDS converts from England and Scandinavia. It blew my mind even as a late 20th-c American. So glad you have seen and loved. Kafka Liz (talk) 19:22, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
Bright Angel comes to mind ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:48, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
That is very lovely. Thank you. Kafka Liz (talk) 14:12, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hiding...

Glad you came out and said something. I've been sitting on my hands but am happy to follow your lead! How are things, btw? We might get spring here, but still some snow in the forecast. Victoriaearle (tk) 15:10, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

My mam, CT-based, is always ringing to say how crazy the weather is of late. We had a full-blown hail storm here just the other day. What I don’t understand is this: RexxS loves the project and is a net positive. Why all this bureaucratic bullshit - calling it like I see it - about “tools”? It’s no wonder people flee this project in droves. Kafka Liz (talk) 16:56, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
The problem is that net-positive is subjective to some folks. You and I know there's a clear stratagem to hat collecting, saying the right things, making the right moves, etc., to get the "tools", but anyone who's here to actually contribute? Pfft! Not admin material per the hordes. Victoriaearle (tk) 18:20, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
I think the “d” there is extraneous. Pronounce it without, and you’ll get me meaning. Kafka Liz (talk) 18:25, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Trying to say, all snark aside, couldn’t agree more. Kafka Liz (talk) 18:32, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Agree. Butting in (TPS!), if Vic, Liz, and Nikki are vouching, then that's a pretty strong indication of character behind his account. My opinion is...now we have another content admin. Ceoil (talk) 21:17, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Yes, that was my feeling too. There's a deep and untapped pool of content editors who would make good admins but have no chance in hell of ever passing, so I had no issue at all supporting RexxS. The only question to be considered is whether he can be trusted with the "tools" and the answer is unequivocally yes. The rest is noise and frankly gets to be counterproductive. If I ever get back here as an editor I'd like to leave old grudges in the grudge cemetery and move on. On a different topic, Game of Thrones tonight!! Victoriaearle (tk) 22:41, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
For those with long memories, I think it was Moni3 that first came up with the term "content admins". Its been a hard, and bloody, fucking, road since, John Snow. Speaking of such, and on behalf of both Liz and myself (if I may), we are delirious with excitement, at Game of Thrones tonight!! Ceoil (talk) 22:52, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
I still miss Awadewit :( Kafka Liz (talk) 05:34, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Kerry Bog Village moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Kerry Bog Village, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page or move it yourself. SSSB (talk) 21:22, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Ok, that’s cool. Times sure have changed since when I first started editing. Kafka Liz (talk) 21:25, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
  • I agree that Kerry Bog Village seems to be a notable topic, that merits a standalone article. I added a couple of references, and a couple more sentences.
  • I also thought that SSSB should be more careful, and told them so, on their talk page.
  • In my opinion, the wikipedia has a far greater need for contributors who are willing and able to add new content than it does for more quality control volunteers.
  • Keep up the good work! Geo Swan (talk) 00:06, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
Geo Swan, Kafka Liz with those changes you can move it back into the name space, if you wish, sources is all that was needed. SSSB (talk) 00:10, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Moved back to mainspace. For the record, since there was no controversy whatsoever about the initial article, references are a bonus. On the other hand, nobody's likely to mess around with this again. Risker (talk) 04:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, Risker and Geo Swan. I do have more text and was looking for better sources than the few I have, but I’m glad to see I’ve been beaten to it! It’s not yet 7 am my time, but the article will be more fleshed out before the sun sets. Kafka Liz (talk) 05:59, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
  • The village is an interesting topic, and it was a pleasure to work on it.

Personally, I am skeptical of the museum's operators assertion that it is unique, in Europe. Museums that recreate villages from previous centuries are pretty common here in North America. However, we aim for verifiability, not truth.

    Thanks for starting the article!

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 01:14, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

Geo, thank you! I agree that recreated historical villages are not unique - I grew up in the US and so can think of two right off the top of my head: Plimouth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg - but Irish bogs and the culture that grew up around them are pretty unusual, and I don’t think there’s another museum like it in the country. The owner’s role in bring back the Bog Pony is noteworthy in itself, I think.
I’m so glad you enjoyed reading and working on the article. I am working on adding more, but doing it mostly offline until it is ready. Kafka Liz (talk) 22:50, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

You probably know my way of mourning: dedicate an article to you, then I found a good one: Irische Legende, to be expanded from stub. Irish legend, that's you, and that it's sort of controversial, that could also be you. Say no if you want a different one. Franz Kafka: Das Schloss

Today, Irische Legende is on the Main page, which still has Kafka, and Louis Thiry. We experience kafkaesque stories, and received an enlightening language lesson on what "toxic behaviour" may mean by Nishidani. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:35, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

Thank you belatedly, Gerda. I’ll look at those links, and maybe they will help. Kafka Liz (talk) 23:22, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
That rings well. I have other comments but won’t voice them for fear of censure. Kafka Liz (talk) 23:30, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

Huh??

Is this true? You and hubby aren't allowed to !vote in the same RfA b/c you share an IP? If that's true, there's an office (well, they like to think of themselves as OFFICE (all caps)) that might want to know how very extremely biased and prejudicial against wives that is. I know this is coming out a little sarcastic but I'm writing in all seriousness. I'm seriously outraged, to the point of starting a petition to the our new friend Katherine. Next time, !vote anyway!!! Hope all is well with you. My black kitty died last week, very suddenly in his sleep, so that was a shock. The rest is same old, same old. Victoria (tk) 00:01, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

It’s a problem I’ve had before, and many times, and I didn’t want to start the whole circus up again, especially now I’m mostly retired. I just haven’t the energy.
I’m so sorry to hear about your boy; I’d go nuts if that happened to me. Mine who have passed always showed signs beforehand. I remember making a special bed for one and sleeping next to him on the night I thought would be his last. As much as I love the two with me now, I still miss that guy. Kafka Liz (talk) 06:57, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
But you’re right: it is prejudicial, and stupid, and it’s something that seems to be invoked very selectively. Welcome to Wikipedia. Kafka Liz (talk) 07:03, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
I'll send you email when I can bring myself to talk/write about it without tears welling up. Re the rest, I was in a bit of a mood last night, but it is biased, stupid, etc. Have you considered submitting a public request to the Bureaucrats and asking whether you're allowed to participate in RfAs if your hubby participates too? I think chilling you out is the last thing we want to be doing; we should be welcoming you. Victoria (tk) 16:58, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
You're explicitly allowed both to participate; certainly in my day a sizeable chunk of the secure Arbcom wiki was a glorified database of who was related to whom precisely so that if an overenthusiastic checkuser thought they'd uncovered a sockpuppet we could explain to them that both accounts were legitimate. I assume that data is now on some kind of checkuser database rather than arbcom, as part of the general hiving-off of powers from Arbcom (Opabinia regalis, you presumably have access both to arbwiki and to whatever the CUs use, can you confirm who's responsible for this now?), but it will certainly be held somewhere. To any CU who happens to see this, I've met both Ceoil and Liz and can confirm that they're definitely different people. TK, so sorry to hear about the cat; as with Liz, with all of mine we've at least had some warning that it was coming. ‑ Iridescent 17:47, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Erm, I *am* a CU, and I would have been very happy to go to the mats to support Kafka Liz's right to participate in the same RFA (or any other discussion for that matter) as Ceoil; in fact, I've kept her talk page on my watchlist just in case she needed re-upping of IPBE or some other assistance specific to this issue. I'm horribly disturbed that anyone would have told you to not participate, KL; unfortunately, I do have a suspicion of who it may have been. I can personally think of at least 40 "Wikimedia" couples, both of whom participate at varying levels and in all kinds of areas, and this is just unacceptable. Please put me on your "speed email" and then go about your business in the same way as any other editor, participating where you want and how you want. Even if I don't appear to be active onwiki, an email from you would get prompt attention. Risker (talk) 18:27, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, this "one comment per couple" idea is hot garbage and if anybody tries that argument I too would be happy to tell him off. (Somehow I feel pretty confident it'd be a him.)
As for secret databases, there's an arbcom wiki and a global checkuser wiki - the latter is mainly for cross-wiki/long-term abuse, so the local-interest stuff like who has said they're related/share an IP is still on the arbwiki. Though I don't see you in it, presumably because you don't really need a secret database to store information that isn't a secret.
Victoria, sorry to hear about your black kitty, that's so sad. Opabinia regalis (talk) 08:13, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
I shouldn't speak for her, but my sense is that this 2016 RfC is what's been informing KL's reluctance. If I remember correctly, though I'd have to check or maybe KL or Ceoil remember, it had to do with !voting in another RfC (probably to do with infoboxes or some such). Thanks all re cat. I keep expecting to see him next to me when I'm typing. Victoria (tk) 13:10, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Very, very sorry to hear Victoria, know from long experience how hard such loss can be, and how upsets like that can set one back :( Best wishes from Cork, you have been a great friend to both of us over the years. Ceoil (talk) 20:36, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

If I recall correctly, Victoria has the right of this here. I don’t stack !votes with my husband., though we often share the same or similar opinions. I share those when I feel strongly enough, though these days that’s seldom, as I don’t participate often here any longer, for which there is a reason. That said, I am humbled by all of your support and sentiment. Thank you all, so much - it means a lot. Kafka Liz (talk) 21:56, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

I think you can be reassured, Liz, from the above that there are some *very good* and smart, bright, people on wiki. One thing I've learned, not always fondly (to my shame)...Victoria is usually right. Ceoil (talk) 07:24, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
I do remember one charming man who was a shining light during maybe why you don't contribute anymore. Ceoil (talk) 23:35, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
That article was a real trial by fire. It’s a time I don’t recall fondly, but F&f was a huge, huge help, and I’m grateful for his input and insistence on the best. Almost everyone involved there worked so hard - it was great when it came through. Kafka Liz (talk) 07:17, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
You did a lot of major surgery there, under heavy fire. I wish I could look back now, years later, and laugh, but no. However, yes fowler was a beacon. Ceoil (talk) 07:45, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

(I was only referring to the gray ones mentioned ;) - Someone should translate Old Love. There's a video at the end of the article showing the two reading from it, who wrote it years after they separated. You don't need German ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:27, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
I should put me mam up onto that; think she would enjoy! Thank you for the vid; my German is minimal at best (I can say thank you and recite parts of The Erlkönig, but that’s about it). User:Kafka Liz a girl is no one 12:09, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
... today's Alte Liebe became especially meaningful after yesterday's funeral - life is too short. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:37, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Sending good thoughts

... lots of chocolate! Because it's the best I can think of. Victoria (tk) 19:00, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

That looks lovely, Vic. Thank you! I’d send some lasagne in return, probably. :) Look for it soon, when I’m in a happier mood. User:Kafka Liz a girl is no one 04:02, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Totally understand the not happy mood! Life is stressful. Hope you're hanging on ok. If you can get ingredients for lasagne, and have the time to cook it, then I wouldn't turn it down. Getting food in isn't easy. Take care & be well. Victoria (tk) 20:28, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Ten years!

Next awesome anniversary ;) - It must have been a man who gave this to your husband first, and to you the next day ;) - Great conversation on my talk, read and join if you like. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:33, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

I sense that the man and I didn’t much cotton to each other, but it was a nice gesture. As for the husband User:Ceoil... well, he’s married to Wikipedia rather than to me. User:Kafka Liz a girl is no one 04:06, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
I also know people who think some users should have engraved "Wikipedia" in their wedding ring ;) - A years ago, a friend died, one of the many whose lives I cherish. Missing music this year, so images. There will be a streamed St John Passion from Leipzig at 3pm Leipzig time, to sing along. I have 2 DYK today, see my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:59, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

  Season's Greetings
Wishing you and yours a Happy Holiday Season, and all best wishes for the New Year! Adoration of the Magi (Jan Mostaert) is my Wiki-Christmas card to all for this year. Johnbod (talk) 12:11, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you all!

I haven’t made a Christmas card this year, and I am humbled by your kind offerings. Meant a lot to me after a very rough year. User:Kafka Liz a girl is no one 05:05, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Good call!

No fecking humour here, like doing improvised stand up in the Stalin era! When you have to wonder if a gag with a good paper trail will get you blocked, it makes you think if this is a healthy enviroment.. Happy holidays KL! Si. Simon Adler (talk) 05:29, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
I think a <3 is in order here. Best of holidays and New Years to you, Si. User:Kafka Liz a girl is no one 07:49, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Barnstar

Didn't see where I removed that. Feel free to restore anything inadvertent. --Deepfriedokra (talk) 03:45, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Tis all there in the history. There was literally no need for any of this. User:Kafka Liz A girl is no one 03:50, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Er, you Barnstars are right there. Where it says "Barnstars". --Deepfriedokra (talk) 03:51, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Because the person in question restored it. Thanks. User:Kafka Liz A girl is no one 03:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
