Why such extensive direct quotations in this article?

Over half of this article's text is formatted in italics to indicate direct quotation. This is against the basic notion of an encyclopedia article, which paraphrases its sources. I see no justification for directly quoting scientific papers to such an extent in an encyclopedia article.
