This page should not be speedily deleted because this article concerns a significant historical event, specifically the kidnapping of Howard A. Woolverton by Machine Gun Kelly on January 26, 1932. The kidnapping was covered in hundreds of newspapers across the United States, was mentioned prominently in several kidnapping compendia published nationwide in the following weeks, and contributed to passage of the Lindbergh Law. The kidnapping has been virtually forgotten because of documented efforts by both Woolverton and J. Edgar Hoover to block investigation of the crime. However, its contribution to the federal kidnapping law makes it an essential element in kidnapping history, Depression era crime, and the histories of those criminals involved, including Machine Gun Kelly, Kathryn Kelly and others. It is for these reasons at least as important as many other kidnappings featured as articles on Wikipedia, for example the Kidnapping of Edward Bremer. I understand that deletion was recommended due to a lack of citations. Information about Woolverton's abduction, drawn from contemporary newspaper accounts, a federal statement, and other documents, are voluminous and will be added asap if this article is permitted to remain. Per my conflict of interest statement, I am the author of a book due out in a few weeks on this topic. I am also at present the foremost authority on the kidnapping, but will be glad to step back if someone else prefers to write of this crime. --KMeredithHistory (talk) 16:59, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
