 Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.
thank you. I've been looking at all this. And my big question is the sandix, user page, Draft page. That part is the most confusing. Thanks for any help or links. And I was trying it on my phone and will look on my laptop in case it's easier. Karin KLongC (talk) 04:49, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello! Thanks for your help and encouragement! The page I created is up!

I am attempting my first Wikipedia page. I heard there's a way to set up a sub page and work on the article before publishing. Have I done that correctly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KLongC (talkcontribs) 00:36, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

You have successfully created your "sandbox", but if your goal is to create an article, you might prefer to use a userspace draft with a name more appropriate for your subject than "sandbox". You can also choose to start by using the article wizard.
And while "publish" sounds like a big deal, in Wikipedia's context is simply means to "save to Wikipedia's servers". And the act of submitting a draft for review is yet a different step. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 01:46, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ive started with the article wizard and thanks for the heads up about what publish means! I panicked at first, thinking i was submitting already. KLongC (talk) 04:51, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Userpage

edit

Hello KLongC. I have just noticed that your user page redirects to a mainspace article i assume you were working on prior to moving it to the main encyclopaedia. It's not mandatory, i believe, but i suspect it would be better ~ and more useful for people looking to find you ~ to have it redirect here, your talk page. You can do that by editing it to replace all its current content with "#REDIRECT[[User talk:KLongC]]" (not including the quotes). Hope this is helpful. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 10:00, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Good morning Lindsey and thank you so much for reaching out I appreciate you. I am new to Wikipedia so this is helpful. Do I put that redirect to into the talk page on the page that I published or in my user page? KLongC (talk) 14:14, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see what you mean about when I go to the user page it redirects to the page that I created I don't even know how to get to the user page to enter the Redirect That you sent me. KLongC (talk) 14:16, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay I just figured it out and I will do this. KLongC (talk) 14:18, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
So I actually went into the HTML editor and just deleted the redirect to the page I created. KLongC (talk) 14:21, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey there! I notice you called yourself Karin up above ~ is that your name? Regardless, i won't use it unless you say it's OK, because we often/usually refer to each other by our usernames or abbreviations thereof around here.
So, i see what you did, well done on working it out (i'll be honest, it probably too me more than sixty edits to figure that out!). People often put something about themselves on their user pagers ~ you can see mine here ~ but it is by no means unusual to have an empty one, as you do now. What you have put on the talk page of the article (Talk:G William Longenecker) is just fine; it lets people know about your connexion with the article subject. I would suggest that you read WP:COI if you have not done so already. I don't think you have fallen foul of it at this point, but as a community we are pretty strict about people with a potential (or real) conflict of interest ~ indeed, there have been a number of big discussions about this very subject recently. The best advice i can give is that which is often given: Don't edit the article, but make suggestions on the talk page.
I would like to help you with the Longenecker article, and will be happy to collaborate if you are willing. My first concern, and something i'm probably going to do something about pretty soon, is with the references you use: Indicating that your information is based on family archives, which i think you've done a couple of times, is less than ideal because everything we write needs to be verifiable, and private archives may well not be (obviously, you'd know about that better than i). So, is there any place ~ books, newspapers, websites, etc. ~ that we can look to verify what you have written?
Finally, i want to repeat the message that jmcgnh gave you in the first section here and say "Welcome!" This is a great place and community, despite having a steep learning curve in some things, and i hope you stick around and have fun. I look forward to, i hope, working with you. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 15:39, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
thank you, and you're welcome to call me Karin or use my handle.
Thanks for being willing to collaborate!
Good idea about not editing it and putting more on the talk page.
More soon KLongC (talk) 22:03, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I had to run. Re"family archives, I get it that it's not ideal. There are writings and I am checking to see if they've been published, and if not could work on getting them published. I'm open to pulling that part out and re entering once we have the references. Before we pull it, good idea other ways to research. For example there would be records of the homesteading in N Dakota, right, and possibly property ownership in Utah. KLongC (talk) 22:51, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am adding additional links that could be added as citations. Let me know if these help. KLongC (talk) 02:07, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Karin. Not ignoring you, just busy, but i have a couple of days off coming up, so will be happy to take a look and see how it goes. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 13:31, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
totally fine. Thank you and I have no specific expectations in timing. KLongC (talk) 12:13, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Lindsay, I've taken a more detailed look. I appreciate the editing and tightening things up, Some things that were deleted, I'll look for more citations and maybe we can re-enter. I've added some more information and ideas on the talk page. thank you again!

Photos

edit

I found an archive from my dad that has a variety of photos of my grandfather and I'd like to at least have 1 or 2 on the page. There are some that I know for sure are family photos so taken by someone in our family and where we don't need To worry about the copyrights. I've looked at the space for uploading photos andWhat are your thoughts about the process should I upload the photos there and then let you know where they are or what they are called? KLongC (talk) 12:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oops, i remembered i'd seen something about photos, but completely forgot where it was ~ i looked on the article talk page, didn't see it there and thought maybe my memory was going.... Anyway, if we can get a photo which can be released to us, that'd be great. I'm not one of the whizzes of our community when it comes to copyright, especially images and such, but mine understanding is that if the person who took it is willing to release it under the appropriate licence then we can use it. I think that if you do upload a picture, with a release/licence, we can then link to it and put it in the article ~ that i can help with. Let me know. Hi Karin. Well, the days off i was expecting were removed  , but i do have a couple of make-up days off this week. I'm going to take a look today and perhaps remove some of the stuff cited to the family archives; i will see how it looks. Is it possible for you to email me (use this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/LindsayH ) either PDF files or photocopies of the references you do have and have used in the article (the ones not available online)? The relevant page(s) from the Franklin Court and two difference bits from the Wisconsin State Journal would be useful. From this point on, i'll use the article talk page, so others are aware of the conversation and can join in too. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 06:50, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I apologize for the delay. I've had some health challenges. I just check using the link re: an email and don't see a way to attach files. The Franklin Court book and video feature Prof Longenecker extensively, so it will be a lot of work to get all the page numbers and time references in the video. I will work on it. And I'll go over to the article talk page also. thank you again! KLongC (talk) 03:01, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Result?

edit

Hello again! I've been through and reorganised a bit and cut a bit, checked all the statements against the references, and i feel quite good about the article. I hope you don't look at it and be horrified by what i've done! Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 12:46, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also, you may have noticed, i moved the article so it now resides at G. William Longenecker (note the period after the G), as i think that is our usual format. I also removed the tags at the head of the article which indicated a coupe of issues because i think i have resolved those issues. Hope you think it looks better thus. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 12:55, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will look this weekend at this and your other notes! Thank you so much! With the title edit, does it change the l8nk 8ve shared? KLongC (talk) 15:49, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Which link? Most links i found either i changed to make into redirects or they point to a redirect which will take them to the right place. If you check and it's not right, you can change it or point it out to me and i will. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 16:13, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
