I was impressed that you compared the Spanish Wikipedia's article for Nueva canción to the one here. Broadening that article to include national manifestations sounds great. I'll probably leave some comments on the talk page for that article. Youth voice could also use some expansion and I'd be curious to see what you would add. I agree with Gobonobo's assessment. I hope that as you do work on the Nueva Cancion article that you can incorporate youth studies insights into the work. I am looking forward to seeing you get started so we can talk about your ideas and plans. Systemic bias and community interaction

Hi KLi 32. I was told that you may be writing an honor's thesis analyzing systemic bias and community interaction on Wikipedia. I wanted to point you towards some resources that could be useful in such an endeavor. For starters, Wikipedia:Systemic bias is an essay that gives a good overview of system bias here. The article academic studies about Wikipedia has a decent overview of the peer-reviewed literature. Specific journal articles and academic studies can be found on the Wikipedia:Academic studies of Wikipedia page. Finally, Wikipedia's in-house newsletter The Signpost regularly features write ups on recent research. Good proposal

KLi32, I have been slow in responding to your good work. You are correct that this is a proposal, not a draft of an article. I think that your article proposal has potential ("Youth and Musical Identity.") I would caution you that WP is very strict about not making an "argument" in the article (the opposite of what we seek to do in academic writing). This does not preclude using Laughey's book, but it means to use it with care. Also, Furlong looks at subculture and music, as does the Handbook of Youth and Young Adulthood.edited by Dr. Furlong. I also suggest you consider how your proposal is in conversation with the "Youth Subculture" article and related pages. Let's talk tomorrow night. Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 05:04, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

An article on Youth and musical identity could work. Unfortunately, we don't even have an article for musical identity, so it will involve some trailblazing. Your article will need to use quality sources that directly address youth musical identity, preferably using that exact terminology. Laughey's book seems like a good start. A search on Google Scholar brings up sources that will help to assert the notability of your topic. On your user page, you said that you plan to use your experience "to inform my contribution while drawing conclusions on the general trends from Laughey’s research." I want to be sure that you are familiar with the policy on original research. For encyclopedic writing, it is important not to craft your own conclusions from the literature, but rather to report and summarize. I look forward to seeing your article come together. Thank you both for your feedback. Gobonobo I am aware of the policy on original research and apologize if my poorly constructed remarks were cause for concern. I feel confident that this new approach will be in compliance of all Wikipedia guidelines. With that said, I think the most effective route would be a contribution to Youth Subculture that focuses on the role music plays in subculture. There is plenty of information available on the topic, the Youth Subculture article could use some development and diversification anyway, and this way I could feel confident improving an existing article instead of trailblazing something like Youth and musical identity and leaving it only partially developed. I think this is my finalized course of action. Please let me know if you have any additional ideas or critiques. Your input has been invaluable!

KLi32, Hello! I enjoyed looking at your update. You have found the "big names" in youth subculture studies. All have insights that belong in WP articles if they are not already. I also agree that an revising the article to remove UK bias is a valid task. As you work on the youth subculture page, could you share with me how your sources help to move outside the UK perspective?

I also recommend looking for academic sources on tribus urbanas, for example subcultura. The topic does perhaps fall in category of recentism- it is hot right now - but it might also be productive. Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 17:56, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia.
