WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Angelus Silesius Meeting House, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Citing athletic achievements

Rather than trying to look up a newspaper link to every achievement, if you look on the state sanctioning body, you should find links to at least the annual tournament results. Some states even have listings for state championships by school.

I'm sorry, but you can't just copy-paste a Google translation of the website of the school into Wikipedia, for several. First, that is copyright violation, and absolutely not permissible here – I see that you have already had several warnings about that, including two from Diannaa; and secondly, the tone of such websites is, by their nature, almost invariably overly promotional, and entirely unsuitable for inclusion in an encyclopaedia. Also, please read about what is considered an independent reliable source for Wikipedia purposes (which, specifically, does not normally include the website or other published materials of the person or institution itself).

I have to ask: do you think there may be other articles which you have started by copy-pasting material – whether translated or not – from elsewhere into your sandbox? I have tried to be very careful not to just copy-paste translations, in this article and in the other articles I am creating. I believe your suggestion that I just copy pasted much of this article is quite erroneous, though I did use the school website, some from Wordpress, as a chief source. I ask that you please follow the recommendation "to blank a section instead of an entire article, add the template to the beginning of the section and at the end of the portion you intend to blank" which would help me to know what part of the article you are referring to. Ah, yes, I should have drawn attention to this sandbox edit here as well as in my edit summary at Gonzaga Institute, Palermo – sorry! In case you are wondering, I read Italian without difficulty. There is no doubt in my mind that your text was translated from theirs.

As for blanking one section, that's what we do when an editor has added a copyright violation to part only of an otherwise untainted article. In this case, the copyright violation dates from before the article creation, and all the text was written by the same person (you), so the whole page will need to be carefully checked for other possible problems. When you have time, please reply to my last question above; that is really crucial, and should take precedence over other matters. You have 20,000 edits – we really need to know whether every one of them needs to be checked. Of course, I hope that this was just a one-time slip, easily remedied – but I'm not entirely encouraged by the other similar complaints higher up this page. Are you saying that what's in my sandbox is published and may not be copied from a direct translation? I thought that what I did in my (private) sandbox was for my eyes only, and no one has ever told me otherwise. I always copy the text from other articles into my sandbox and then rework it so that it is not plagiarism, but the source is acknowledged. If this is not permitted, please direct me to where I can read what is and is not permitted in use of school websites to create Wiki articles, and how nothing in the sandbox (for reworking) can be directly copied from another source. @Justlettersandnumbers: Jzsj (talk) 18:26, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

• Hi Father. I've always had good interactions with you, so I hope you don't mind my butting in here. Your sandbox is private in that it isn't published in the article space and isn't indexed for Google, and convention on the English Wikipedia is that we typically don't edit things in other users userspace. That being said, it is still accessible to anyone on the internet if they know where to look, and the Wikimedia Foundation asserts to anyone who view it or its revisions that all text present in the current version or the historical versions are available for them to copy and adapt for their own purposes so long as they attribute it and release it under the same license (the CC-BY-SA license). You can see thins information right above the "save changes" button any time you make an edit.
  In terms of how to best write school articles John from Idegon and Kudpung help coordinate WikiProject Schools, and they might be able to give you some advice.

Thanks for clarifying this. I thought the work wasn't "submitted to Wikipedia" until it was published in an article. In the future I'll do all me copying to Microsoft word for editing, and then move to the Sandbox. And if someone wants to delete the whole history of my sandbox to remove it from public use, that's fine by me: I have no reason to refer to it. I've gone ahead and marked it for deletion. I'm pretty good with copyright things in general, but don't have time right now to go through other school articles where there might be similar issues. I didn't know you had to delete my sandbox to be rid of previously deleted files there. Does this mean I need to open a new account in Wikipedia? No need for a new account. Typically what we do for copyright violations is selectively delete the revision history for any copyright violations, leaving the clean versions. Since you said above that you didn't mind the entire history being deleted, I took that as a request for deletion via CSD G7: since the current version was blank and you said you were fine with deleting the entire history, just deleting the page and allowing you to recreate it yourself whenever you wanted seemed much easier than deleting all the revisions and leaving a blank one. I have been removing the 4 lines of bullets that come at the end of new articles (I don't know why they're there) and are often not eliminated by the reviewer; I'll note if this has any effect on the categories. NFCC

Hi. I know all this is a lot to take in, and I'm sorry, but please read WP:NFCC. File:EscolaPadreArrupe.png can't be kept here unless your draft article becomes an article in mainspace within 7 days.

You also can't use a non-free file in your draft, so I'm going to have to comment that usage out of the draft. See Wikipedia:Drafts#Preparing drafts, which explains - "Non-free content cannot be included in draft articles per Wikipedia's policy on where non-free media is allowed. Any desired non-free content should be added to the article once it has been moved to the mainspace."

I have, however, uploaded a better copy of the image. If it does get deleted before your article is moved to the mainspace you can get it reinstated at WP:REFUND when the article is in mainspace. I'll also keep a copy offline just in case. Sorry to complicate things for you, but the WP:NFCC rules exist to protect wikipedia. -- Begoon 03:07, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

  • No problem. Copyright and WP:NFCC are complex issues here, so it's understandable that people make errors before they are familiar with our policies. I do note though that you've made a few similar errors in the past, which have been explained here, and wikipedia does take copyright very seriously, so I'd urge a little more care given the history. Just ask questions if you're unsure - most experienced editors would be more than happy to help you. As an additional note for you here that won't get deleted if the image description page does, the better quality image I uploaded came from http://www.bdp.redejesuitadeeducacao.com.br/colegios/escudos/epate.png, also archived at this link:[1], in case you need it in the future. All I did to that was cropped it, removed the white surrounding background and resized it to be acceptable per WP:NFCC. -- Begoon 09:30, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

I notice the file pages specify that the files are being used under non-free content criteria, but there are not suitable explanations or rationales as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description pages, and edit them to include non-free rationales.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
