Speedy deletion nomination of African-American aviators

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on African-American aviators requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. —teb728 t c 04:11, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Evelyn Waldren, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Enterprise, California (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:19, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

Hi Julie, and thanks for the contributions you are making to wikipedia. When you add subjects to categories, please take note that if an article is in a sub-category, then it is already in any 'parent' or broader categories by virtue of that. So for example, an article in Category: African-American female aviators should not also be added to the categories American female aviators, nor African-American aviators, because the first category is itself in those two categories. So the aim is to put it in the most specific category possible, as in that example. I hope that makes sense. Thank you, Melcous (talk) 10:20, 12 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Just looking further, this means you should revert the edits you have made to add all those who are already in the subcategory Tuskegee Airmen to the parent category African-American aviators. Thank you Melcous (talk) 10:32, 12 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Melcous: This is not correct. See Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality ; these kind of categories, when they exist at all, are intentionally non-diffusing, because it creates a needless and misleading separation. (There was a very famous case involving moving women authors to a separate category; there should just be author categories, and if there's a separation by gender, then include articles in BOTH.)
That said, User:Juliedohbigny, I think many of the categories you've recently created aren't appropriate by the same guideline I cited. These aren't relevant distinctions in the fields you've created; the example here is not differentiating sportspeople by religion, because it very rarely matters. In the same way, while differentiating aviators by nationality might make sense, being a "female record holder" does not. Same with Chinese-American female aviators and the like; ethnicity shouldn't make somebody any better or worse at flying a plane. SnowFire (talk) 08:16, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Oh thanks SnowFire, yes I forgot about the non-diffusing categories. It is more complicated than I made it sound Julie, sorry. Still something worth paying attention to. Melcous (talk) 22:12, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Chinese-American female aviators

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Chinese-American female aviators requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. SounderBruce 00:40, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Juliedohbigny, sorry if I stepped on your toes in cleaning up the article. That wasn't my intent. I didn't notice that it was an article you had just created until after I had made some manual of style cleanup edits. Had I checked the history before editing, I would have seen that you were still in the process of building the article and I never would have just gone ahead and started editing. Again, sorry.
